Chapter Twenty - Nine: The begining

Emma's pulse raced as she came to the car park, her eyes scouring the room for Jason, he had left her behind.

Spotting Jason near their vehicle, Emma ran up, her grin withering as she observed the rage etched on his face. She took a long breath, attempting to keep her voice calm.

"Jason, what's wrong?" she inquired, her voice laced with anxiety.

His voice dripped with accusation, Jason fired out, "Don't play innocent with me, Emma. I saw you with that man. Laughing, flirting... it's like I don't even matter."

Emma's eyes widened in surprise. "Jason, Brian is simply an old acquaintance. We were catching up, that's all. You know I would never purposely injure you."

Wait, harm him? What was she saying? She pondered inside herself. Why does she feel horrible anyway? It isn't like their marriage was anything genuine.

Jason's jaw tightened, his displeasure apparent. "It's hard to believe that when I see you cozying up to another man. Are you attempting to make me jealous? Is that it?"

Emma's voice trembled as she spoke. "No, Jason, I'm not trying to make you envious. Jealous? Why would you be jealous anyway? And I thought you trusted me. Can't we speak about this calmly?"

The tension in the air rose as their shouts got louder, garnering the attention of people close. Emma's heart sunk, recognizing that their conflict was spiraling beyond their control. She urgently looked for a method to bridge the distance between them, to find forgiveness and understanding.

“Get in the car,” Jason commanded, his voice devoid of passion.

The journey home was silent. The stillness hung thick in the air, neither of them daring to break it.

As they arrived at the opulent estate, Emma's gut twisted with fear. She realized this disagreement was merely a symptom of their fragile relationship, a relationship founded on convenience rather than love. But Jason's allegations still hurt, reminding her of the superficiality of their relationship.

Once entering the mansion, Jason turned to confront Emma, his look a combination of disappointment and rage. "I can't believe you, Emma. I consented to this agreement to preserve face for our families, but I never expected you to insult me like way," he replied fiercely.

Emma felt a combination of emotions whirling within her. Confusion, irritation, and despair mixed as she struggled to make sense of the situation. She couldn't understand why Jason was responding this way, particularly since he had made it obvious that their marriage wasn't founded on love.

She got up the confidence to speak, her voice tinted with defiance. "This marriage was never built on love, Jason. You know that as well as I do. We are both playing our roles in this farce, so don't pretend like I'm the only one at fault here."

Jason's eyes widened, his mouth tightened in wrath. "I may have agreed to this arrangement, but that doesn't give you the right to disrespect me," he said, his tone harsh.

Emma took a long breath, attempting to settle herself. "I'm sorry for what occurred today, Jason. It was a mistake, and I accept full responsibility for it. But we have to find a way to cohabit civilly in this marriage, for the sake of our families if nothing else."

The tension between them remained in the air, neither prepared to back down or really tackle the underlying difficulties that plagued their relationship.

As they withdrew to their own corners of the estate, Emma couldn't help but wonder if there was a way to repair their arrangement, to discover a shred of true connection within the façade they had established.

After Jason had grabbed a shot of alcohol from the living room bar, he headed upstairs to his room without a word to Emma.

The following morning, Emma woke up to an empty bed, her heart heavy with the weight of the unresolved quarrel from the previous night. As she struggled to compose her thoughts, her phone rang, and she noticed that it was Mira calling.

With a combination of relief and concern, Emma accepted the phone, wanting a buddy to confide in. She poured her heart out to Mira, detailing how her harmless discussion with Brian had been misread by Jason, leading to a breakdown in trust and communication between them.

Mira listened intently, providing consoling words and a listening ear. She reminded Emma of the importance of their connection and pushed her to reach out to Jason with honesty and sincerity.

After their chat, Emma felt a spark of optimism and resolve to fix things with Jason. She realized it would be quite difficult, however not entirely set in stone to invest the energy to reestablish the trust that had been harmed.

But when Emma entered the kitchen, she found a tiny letter on the counter. It stated, "Gone to work. Back later." Her heart fell as she realized that Jason had departed for work without a word, leaving her with a feeling of emptiness and uncertainty.

Throughout the day, Emma struggled to concentrate on anything other than the gulf between her and Jason. She wished for the opportunity to hash things out, to explain herself and to grasp his viewpoint. As the hours passed, she fought with thoughts of remorse, shame, and desire for the pleasant energy they had shared, even if they weren't close.

When Jason eventually arrived home that evening, the tension in the air was evident. Emma summoned up the strength to approach him, eager to break the stillness and tackle the concerns that had drove them apart.

But when she peered into Jason's icy, faraway eyes, she felt a flood of melancholy rush over her. It was evident that their path to reconciliation would be a long and arduous one, packed with ambiguities and emotions still to be untangled.

Once inside, Jason proceeded to the living room and sank down on the sofa, his posture tight and his countenance inscrutable. Emma paused for a minute before joining him, sitting at a distance, uncertain of how to continue.

"Jason, can we please talk about what happened at the bar yesterday?" Emma eventually broke the tight stillness, her voice calm but tinged with a touch of desperation.

Jason remained quiet for a minute, his gaze locked on some faraway spot. Then, with a heavy sigh, he finally spoke. "Emma, it's not just about what occurred. It's about everything. Our marriage, our bond... or lack thereof."

Emma felt an ache in her chest at his words. She had known for a long that their marriage was more of a façade than a true connection. But seeing Jason say it so frankly made her heart hurt.

"I..." Emma began, seeking to find the perfect words. "I realize that things haven't been great between us. But why did you behave the way you did? Why did it matter whether I was talking to Brian?"

Jason turned to stare at her, his eyes searching hers for some type of explanation. "I don't know, Emma. Maybe because deep inside, I had thought that maybe, just maybe, we might have something genuine between us. And seeing you with someone else, even if it's only a buddy, made me understand how distant from reality that dream actually is."

Emma felt a knot grow in her throat as Jason's words sunk in. She could feel her heart racing quicker and butterflies grow in her tummy. Did Jason really just say that or did she envision it?
