Chapter Fifteen: We need to talk
She got up from the chaise and walked in front of the elaborate mirror, seeing the reflection of a scorned but unwavering lady.
Despite the fragility her history had spun around her, her gaze hardened with resolution, and in the depth of her own eyes, she discovered a flash of the power that had always characterized her.
"Jason," she whispered, her name cutting through her mouth, "you owe me more." More than half-lived existence and falsehoods."
She saw herself standing in front of him and demanding the respect she had always felt was rightfully hers—demanding the acknowledgement of her value.
Her heart thumped with a mixture of fear and resolve, yet it became unbearable to consider giving in, to accept his adultery without question.
Emma vowed to speak "tomorrow," her voice firm as she prepared her speech. I'll be heard, Jason Astor. You'll view me as Emma rather than as a property or a piece in your game. A lady worthy of respect and the truth."
She was surrounded by lengthy shadows in the chamber that had seen her in her happiest and saddest moments as the moon shone down on her with its silvery brilliance.
She would return to the fight tomorrow, but for now, she gave herself permission to spend a few more quiet minutes by herself.
This was a holy period of time to mourn, to become angry, and, at last, to strengthen her resolve for the impending showdown.
The next morning.
Emma stood in front of her room's tall mirror, feeling the cold marble floor under her bare feet.
The image of herself that stared back at her was a changed woman, her eyes blazing with resolution instead of weeping.
She straightened her shoulders, raised her chin, and used non-trembling hands to smooth out the wrinkles in her silk nightgown.
She silently made a promise to herself, whispering, "Enough." to her mirror. "What exactly makes him so special?"
With methodical steps, she made her way to the closet, reaffirming her new purpose with every step.
The hangers chimed gently as she rummaged through the closet, ultimately settling on a fitted gown that exuded confidence.
Deep blue, like to the dusk sky, it seemed serene and poised but foreshadowing the impending storm.
Emma felt the weight of the day's discoveries shield her heart from further harm as cloth hugged flesh.
With a pleasant climb up her spine, the zipper closed, securing her bravery within.
Her fingers discovered, tarnishing from his treachery, the strand of pearls Jason had given her on their first anniversary in the vanity drawer.
She hung them around her neck, each pearl a symbol of strength and beauty created under duress.
Emma made a last assessment of herself in the mirror and saw not just the treacherous wife or the heiress, but also the unexpected and strong combination of both.
Her eyes had formerly been marked by thin lines that gave evidence to exuberant laughter, but now they bore the traces of regretful wisdom.
Just hours before, her lips had trembled with weakness, but now they curled into a hard grin. They were prepared to state her expectations and demonstrate her value.
"Mrs. Astor," she said to her mirror, the title acting as a chain as much as an armor.
Her fingers glided over the polished railing as she descended the big staircase, enjoying the coolness of the wood as a grounding force for the present.
Every step reverberated through the empty corridors, providing a rhythmic backdrop to her pounding pulse.
"Good morning, Ma’am," the housekeeper Alice spoke out, breaking the silence.
Emma said, "Good morning, Alice," in a calm but forceful tone. "Please inform Mr. Astor that I wish to have a word with him after breakfast."
Emma's request had undertones, and Alice sensed them. "Of course, ma'am," she said.
She and Jason ate breakfast alone, silently sharing their meals.
Her thoughts were broken by the sound of the spoons clinking on the plates.
She fed her body with strength with each mouthful, preparing it for the struggle that lay ahead.
The harshness of her coffee matched her mood when she drank it—it was gloomy and unforgiving.
"Emma?" Jason's voice was hesitant, as if he was trying to gauge her level of rage.
"Jason," she nodded, carefully putting down her cup. The boom echoed, signaling the end of small talk.
He said, "Can we talk?" His straightforward inquiry belied the nuanced nature of their reality.
"Talk?" Emma said, getting up from her chair to look him in the eye. "Yes, we will have a conversation. And you'll pay attention."
The girl with the beautiful eyes who had previously looked up at Jason was nowhere to be seen.
Standing in her place was a lady, clothed in self-assurance and equipped with dignity.
She said, "Let's head to your study," without hesitancy in her voice.
He said, "Alright," the word barely getting out of his mouth.
The weight of an imminent encounter hung over the walk to the study.
Emma braced herself for every step, mentally practicing her list of complaints and requests for adjustments.
The study door opened, showing the arena where the decision on her and Jason's future will be made.
Long rays of sunlight streamed through the windows, illuminating the stage of their reckoning.
"Jason, please sit down," Emma said, her voice resonating through the walls covered with books. "We have much to discuss."
And so, with a heart fortified by pain and tempered by resolve, Emma began the arduous task of reclaiming her life.
