Chapter Seventy-Eight – Cracks in the Daylight

Chapter Seventy-Eight – Cracks in the Daylight
For a handful of days, peace held.

The packs worked together to mend wounds, bury the dead, and fortify the cliffs. Wolves patrolled in pairs, their howls crossing into the night, steadier than before. Children played in the ash, too young to carry the weight of whispers.

And Angelica breathed easier.

She walked the camp with Arthur’s hand in hers, silver fire soft beneath her skin, her gaze steady even when wolves looked twice. They bowed more often now, not all, but enough. The fragile trust she’d bled for was beginning to take root.

Arthur watched every step, his wolf bristling with protectiveness. But when he saw her smile at a child, when he heard her laugh faintly with a healer, his chest loosened. He thought maybe maybe they were beginning to climb out of the shadows.

Until the ember stirred.

It started small.

Angelica was helping bind a young wolf’s wound when her vision flickered just for a heartbeat. The child’s silver eyes burned gold, Seraphine’s voice curling faint in her ear.

You think they trust you? They trust their fear. They bow only to the fire you cannot control.

Angelica blinked, her heart racing, the vision gone. The child looked up at her with innocent eyes, silver as moonlight.

She forced a smile, steadying her hands, whispering, “You’ll heal strong.”

But her own fire trembled under her skin.

That night, she told Arthur nothing.

He sat with her by the fire, his shadow curling lazily around them, his hand clasping hers. He looked almost peaceful for once, the lines of exhaustion softer.

She couldn’t break that. Not yet.

So she smiled when he kissed her knuckles, whispered “Always” when he whispered it first, and pretended the ember was quiet.

But when sleep came, Seraphine’s laughter echoed louder than ever.

By the fourth day, it grew worse.

Angelica stood with the Stonefang Alpha, discussing border patrols, when the air shimmered again. The Alpha’s granite eyes burned molten gold. His voice twisted, Seraphine’s words spilling through his lips.

“You think you lead them. You think they follow. But they follow me. Always me.”

Angelica staggered back, her breath shuddering.

“Luna?” the Alpha asked, his brow furrowed. His eyes were granite again, steady and sharp.

Arthur was at her side instantly, his hand firm on her back. “What’s wrong?”

Angelica forced her breath steady, forced her smile. “Just tired. I’ll rest.”

Arthur’s gaze searched for her, suspicious, but he let it go for the moment.

That night, she broke.

Arthur curled around her, his wolf soft against her fire, his breath steady. But Angelica lay awake, her chest heavy, the ember pulsing hot. Finally, her tears spilled.

“Arthur,” she whispered, her voice breaking.

He stirred instantly, eyes sharp, arms tightening. “What is it? Tell me.”

She pressed her face into his chest, sobbing. “She’s not just in my dreams anymore. I see her during the day. In their faces. In their voices. She’s slipping through the cracks, Arthur. She’s”

His chest went rigid. His hands gripped her tighter. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”

Her voice cracked. “Because you already carry so much. Because you’re breaking yourself to hold me together. Because I didn’t want to see the fear in your eyes.”

Arthur pulled back, his amber gaze blazing, fierce and wet. “Fear? Angelica, I’m terrified every second. But not of you. Never of you. I’m terrified of losing you. Of waking up without you in my arms. Don’t you dare carry this alone to spare me. We’re in this together. Always.”

Her sob cracked, her forehead pressing to his. “Always.”

He kissed her fiercely, his voice trembling against her lips. “We’ll fight her. In dreams, in daylight, in every breath. She doesn’t get to take you from me.”

But the ember laughed.

That night, Angelica dreamed again.

Arthur stood before her, his body whole, his amber eyes bright. He reached for her — but when his hand touched hers, it turned to ash. His body crumbled, his wolf dissolving, his voice fading.

And Seraphine whispered sweetly, You can save him if you let me in. You can keep him safe if you surrender yourself.

Angelica screamed, her silver fire raging, but the ember flared hot in her chest.

She woke with a cry, her body convulsing, gold flickering in her eyes.

Arthur caught her instantly, his voice fierce. “No! Stay with me. Angelica, fight her!”

Her claws tore into his arms, unknowing, her voice torn between hers and Seraphine’s. “Arthur safer without me”

His wolf roared, his shadow surging. He pinned her gently, desperately, his forehead pressing to hers. “Don’t you dare say that. Don’t you dare believe her. You are not my danger. You are my salvation.”

Her tears spilled, silver flickering stronger against the gold. “Arthur…”

His voice broke, fierce and trembling. “Come back to me. Always.”

Her fire surged silver, the gold flickering out. She collapsed against him, sobbing into his chest.

Arthur held her, rocking her, whispering again and again, “Always, always, always,” until she steadied.

But in the silence that followed, he felt the ember pulsing hotter than before, stronger.

And he knew: Seraphine was no longer content to whisper. She was clawing toward the surface.
