Chapter Seventy-Five – Whispers in the Ember
Chapter Seventy-Five – Whispers in the Ember
The days after the battle were heavy with silence.
The wounded healed in tents, the dead were mourned in fire, and the cliffs of Stonefang carried the weight of ghosts. The packs moved slowly, their voices hushed, their eyes watchful. Every howl seemed softer, stripped of pride, heavy with exhaustion and wherever Angelica walked, the silence deepened.
Some wolves bowed as she passed. Others turned their eyes away, whispers following like shadows.
“She carries it still.”
“I saw the gold in her eyes.”
“What if she turns?”
Arthur’s jaw clenched at every murmur. His wolf bristled, his teeth ached with the need to snap. But Angelica squeezed his hand, steady even as her shoulders tightened.
“Let them speak,” she whispered to him. “Fear burns itself out slower than wounds. It will fade.”
Arthur looked at her, at the faint hollows under her eyes, the silver in her gaze clouded by shadows she wouldn’t name. His chest twisted. “And what if it doesn’t fade? What if they never see you for who you are?”
Her smile was soft, tired, but unyielding. “Then I’ll keep showing them. One step at a time. One breath at a time.”
He kissed her knuckles, murmuring fiercely, “You shouldn’t have to keep proving yourself. Not to them. Not after what you gave."
Her silver eyes softened, shimmering with tears she didn’t let fall. “Maybe not. But I’ll do it anyway. Because if I can prove to them that love is stronger than fear, then maybe… maybe I’ll believe it too.”
That night, when the camp fires burned low, Arthur pulled her close, wrapping his arms around her, his wolf pressing against hers.
He whispered into her hair, “I hear them whispering. And every time, I want to tear their throats out.”
Angelica smiled faintly against his chest. “You’d start a war just because they’re afraid.”
“I’d start ten wars if it meant protecting you.”
Her fingers curled in his tunic, her voice soft. “But what if protecting me means letting them see I can stand through their fear?”
Arthur closed his eyes, his chest aching. “Then I’ll stand beside you. Always. Even if I have to bite my tongue until it bleeds.”
Her lips brushed his jaw. “Always.”
But when she closed her eyes, the whispers came.
Not the packs. Not Arthur.
You carry me still…
The ember pulsed in her chest, golden light flickering faint under her silver fire. Every beat of her heart brushed against it, every breath stirred its glow.
You can pretend to be strong. You can hold his hand, whisper your vows, smile for the wolves. But I am still here. And I will wait. Fire consumes. Fire returns. You will not smother me.
Angelica’s body tensed. She pressed closer to Arthur, burying her face against him, swallowing the panic.
Arthur stirred instantly, his wolf growling low. “Angelica?”
She forced a smile, though her voice trembled. “It’s nothing. Just tired.”
His amber eyes searched hers, sharp and tender. He knew. He always knew. But he didn’t press. He just kissed her forehead, whispering, “Then rest. I’ve got you.”
And she let herself pretend just for the night that the ember wasn’t still whispering.
By the third day, the packs grew restless. The Stonefang Alpha called a gathering, wolves circling the fire, their eyes flicking between Arthur and Angelica.
“You fought for us,” the Alpha said, his granite voice steady. “But whispers spread like smoke. Wolves fear what they saw. The gold in her fire. The voice that spoke through her lips.”
Murmurs rippled. Eyes turned sharp.
Arthur stepped forward, his shadow bristling, his voice rough. “She saved you. She bled for you. She nearly died for you. And you dare doubt her?”
But Angelica’s hand touched his arm, her voice calm though her pulse raced. “Let them speak.”
Arthur turned to her, his jaw tight. “You don’t owe them”
She met his gaze, her silver eyes firm. “Maybe I don’t. But I owe myself peace. And peace doesn’t come from silence. It comes from facing what they fear.”
She stepped forward, her body trembling but tall. Her voice carried, clear and raw.
“Yes, I carry gold in me. Yes, Seraphine clawed into my bond. She tried to burn me, to break me, to bury herself in my fire. But I am still here. I am still Angelica. And I choose my pack. I chose my mate. I choose love over her always.”
The circle was silent. Some wolves bowed. Some still turned away. But the air shifted not trust, not yet, but something softer than fear.
Arthur’s chest ached with pride and sorrow all at once. He pulled her back against him, kissing her hair, whispering so only she could hear, “You shine brighter than they’ll ever deserve.”
Her tears slipped, quiet, against his chest.
That night, when the camp slept, Arthur lay awake again, his arms around her, his wolf restless.
Her breath was steady against him, her face soft in sleep. But faintly faintly her fire flickered gold under her skin.
He pressed his lips to her temple, whispering fiercely, “You’re not alone in this. Even if the ember burns, even if it whispers. I’ll fight it with you. Always.”
And somewhere in the bond, faint and trembling, her voice answered in sleep. Always.
But beneath it, the ember pulsed once and Seraphine’s laughter echoed faint in the dark.
