Chapter 20 Off the mission
Chapter 20 Off the mission
THIRD PERSON POV
Maelis couldn’t open her eyes as she lay on the bed. She watched Richard clean her wounds, who couldn’t help but sigh over and over.
“You’ll die, Maelis. This can’t go on.” Richard said.
“Agh…I know,” She answered.
“Just go back to the Allard, I'd rather you be imprisoned there than here. Lorenzo, I'm crazy, we are nothing against him.” He said, and looked at her, and could help but look away.
“I’m not yet dead, don’t cry now.” She jokes.
“It’s not funny,” he said and glared at me. “By the way, Lorenzo told me to tell you that the mission is off for now.” He said that made Maelis stunned and almost sit.
“What? Why?” She ask confused.
“I’m not sure, but I heard him say that Lucien Allard just took someone out, and he has something to do about attack him or something.” He said as she covered her wounds with gauze. “This is better, you’ll be able to rest.” He said, stood up, and threw the bloody cloths in the bin when the door flew open.
“Hello, my dear,” Lorenzo said and walked towards me, but Richard quickly blocked his path.
“You’re at my clinic. You’re not allowed to go near my patient if you don’t want to be one.” He said, and Lorenzo laughed.
“Oh, you all are too dramatic.” He said and moved Richard to the side and walked towards my bed. “I just came here to tell you that you’re off the case of Lucien Allard, well, for now. Maybe it will change again, but I’m not sure.” He said that made Maelis frown and shake her head.
“No, why?” She asks.
Lorenzo shrugs her shoulders. “The council just maybe don’t trust you to handle this again, but don’t worry, I got you a new one!” He joyfully exclaimed and pulled out a card from his suit. “I need to find Gabriel Valdez and bring him to me. That boy ran away from his family. It’s a family drama. But, they made a deal with us, here you go.” He said and placed the card on the table side of Maelis’s bed.
“She’ll do it when she recovers,” Richard said, standing behind Lorenzo, who turned around and looked up at him.
“No, you need to do it now. His family is one hell of impatient people, you need to get working. They gave us 1 month to do it, make every day count.” Lorenzo said that made Richard frown and grab his shoulder to face him.
“Do you fucking see what you did to her?” He said and grabbed Lorenzo’s collar, making the guard point their guns at him.
“Richard, it’s okay. I’ll do it.” She said, making Lorenzo smile at Richard and removing his hand from him.
“Great, good luck.” He said before leaving.
“No, Maelis. You’re not living like that.” Richard said, kicking the chair in the room in anger. “I will fucking lose it, I will kill that old fat hag.”
“Chill, I can do it,” Maelis said, making Richard feel frustrated and look at her wit disbelief.
“You’re just as crazy as him. Look at yourself in the mirror, I think you’re losing it too.” He said in frustration and left the room.
MAELIS COULD STILL see the red scars and some wounds on her shoulder as she put her cloths on. She took a deep breath and just put her hair up when her phone rang. It was Richard.
“Hey,” she answered and put it on speaker.
“You left already?” he asks from the other line.
“On my way now,” I said as I zip my bag.
“I got information froma friend, he said that Gabriel Valdez is always seen in clubs.” He said.
“Thanks, I’ll check it on,” I said as I put on my shoes,
“For the love of god Maelis, please come back this time with any injury. You haven’t even fully recovered, and here you are again.” He said, making her chuckle. “Idiot.” He added.
“Don’t worry, doc, I got this. I’ll be going now. Take care.” She said and ended the call.
MAELIS ARDENT POV
I got out of the car as soon as I parked it, I grabbed my bag, and went inside the building.
“You got time for me?” I said to the woman who was sitting behind the counter of the hair salon.
“Mae?! Shit, you’re alive!” She exclaims and runs towards me with a hug.
“Hey, hey, chill. I’m kind of in bad shape.” I said, and she quickly let me go.
“You’re always in one,” she said, which made me laugh.
“I came here to give you think,” I said and took out a wad of cash, making her eyes widen.
“What the---don’t tell me you stole? Maelis, that’s not cool.” She said, I glared at her but she just crossed her arms at me.
“You really think so badly of me,” I said and rolled my eyes at her, making her laugh,
“I don’t need it, Mae, I’m fine.” She said and pushed it back to me.
“I don’t care, you help my family when they need it the most. Now, I won’t take no as an answer, Rye. Besides, I didn’t steal this.” I said I can already see her eyes starting to tear up. “Oh, please, don’t tell me you’re crying again,” I said, and she quickly took off her eyeglasses and wiped her eyes.
“But Mae, this is too much. What would I even do with this money?” She asks.
“Run away from here, run away from the Arcana while you still have time. I can’t hide you forever, so this is what we have to do,” I explain.
“Maelis…” she called, and I smiled and held her hands.
“Make the best of it,” I said,
“Thank you,” she said and pulled me into a hug. “Is there anything I can do for you?” she asks.
“Not unless you know someone from clubs around here.” I said, “You know, I just realized now that New York is big and has lots of clubs.” I said and sigh making her laugh.
“Maybe I could help with that.” She said, making me frown at her with a smile. “There huge sort of club party collaboration tonight, so maybe I can get you inside.” She added.
“You’re the best,” I said and winked at her,
“Of course, I am.” She said proudly. “But before that, I will give you some transformation. I can’t let you go there looking like that. There will be a lot of hot guys there.” She said, winking, making me frown and look at myself.
“What’s wrong with me?”
