Chapter 284 You Can Awaken
Chapter 284 You Can Awaken
Tyler didn't hold back. He took the cup and gulped down the water in one go. The cool water slid down his throat, slightly relieving his thirst.
He handed the empty cup back to Emily, then lifted his head. His eyes fell on her face again, his tone incredibly serious.
"Emily, can you come back to Emerald City with me?"
Emily hadn't expected Tyler to open with that. She froze completely.
She stared at Tyler in a daze. After a long moment, she shook her head, her voice carrying a barely noticeable tremor: "I... I don't want to go back."
Emerald City was a place filled with pain and lies for her.
There was James's betrayal, her desperate escape. She never wanted to set foot in that place again.
"Emily, James was in a car accident. He's in a deep coma right now."
Tyler seemed to have expected her refusal. He added urgently.
Every word carried heavy weight.
Emily's body shook violently, as if struck by lightning.
She instinctively stepped back, shaking her head, her voice soft but filled with firm resistance.
"No! That's impossible! Tyler, stop making excuses. I... I don't want to hear it."
She was afraid—afraid this was another trick, afraid of falling into an endless abyss again.
"Emily, listen to me!"
Tyler stepped forward, his eyes locked on her, afraid she would turn and leave.
"James was in a car accident a week ago. His car went out of control and crashed into a guardrail. He fell into a coma on the spot.
Right now, all the top doctors from Frank Empire and Emerald City have gathered at the hospital. After consulting together, they gave a very grim prognosis...
James will either become a permanent vegetable, or even if he wakes up, his brain stem will be severely damaged, and his cognitive and motor abilities will be greatly affected.
After all, the coma has lasted too long, which will seriously affect his hippocampus recovery. He might forget everything, including you.
So Emily, can you come back to Emerald City with me?"
Tyler finished explaining James's condition in one breath, his tone overflowing with anxiety and worry.
But Emily still refused to believe it. She bit her lip hard, her eyes reddening.
"How can it be such a coincidence? I just got to Lumaria and he had a car accident.
Tyler, are you guys lying to me again?"
Seeing Emily still didn't believe him, Tyler didn't say much more. He pulled out his phone and quickly dialed a number.
The call was answered after just one ring, as if the person on the other end had been waiting by the phone, not wasting even a second.
"Louis, turn on video."
Tyler was brief and to the point, then turned the phone screen toward Emily.
The screen lit up. Louis's face appeared in the frame. He was wearing a uniform, standing outside a sterile hospital room.
The camera slowly moved. Through the transparent glass, Emily could clearly see the scene inside the room...
A familiar figure lay on the hospital bed, tubes inserted all over his body. The heart monitor beeped, with weak waveforms jumping across the screen.
The person wore an oxygen mask on his face, with breathing tubes in his nose. His face was deathly pale, without a trace of color.
But Emily still recognized him at a glance from those familiar features—the person lying there was definitely James.
That man who was always high-spirited with sharp eyes now lay quietly on the hospital bed, lifeless, fragile as if he could shatter at a touch.
"He... James really... How could this happen? You, Tyler, you didn't lie to me..."
Emily's voice choked up. Tears surged uncontrollably, blurring her vision.
"Of course."
Tyler put away his phone. Looking at her reddened eyes, he nodded gently.
"I've never lied to you, Emily."
Thinking about how Emily wouldn't believe him no matter how much he said, only believing after the video call confirmation,
Tyler felt somewhat hurt. He lost interest in talking.
He leaned against the wall and closed his eyes wearily.
Emily looked at his exhausted appearance, then thought of the lifeless James on the hospital bed. Her heart was a jumble of emotions.
She pressed her lips together and said with deep apology,
"I'm sorry, Tyler. I thought... I thought this was another one of your schemes."
"Emily, if possible, I hope we can leave for Emerald City right now."
Tyler interrupted her apology, his tone still urgent.
"James can't wait any longer.
Just because of that incident you can't forgive him—is it serious enough that you could watch his life disappear from this world?"
Tyler's words were like a heavy hammer, striking hard at Emily's heart.
Her whole body trembled. Thinking that James might die because of her stubbornness, her eyes instantly filled with tears.
Tears rolled down like broken pearls, falling on her dress and spreading into small wet patches.
Tyler watched her tears streaming down, and a trace of sympathy rose in his heart.
He knew Emily was a kind girl, just hurt too deeply, which made her so guarded.
He hadn't expected one sentence to make her lose control of her tears. He felt somewhat at a loss...
He wanted to comfort her but felt his position made it inappropriate to touch her.
He could only fidget with the empty cup in his hands, quietly watching her face become soaked with tears.
"Is he... is he very serious? I saw he's on a respirator."
Emily asked chokingly, her voice breaking.
Tyler nodded, his face full of gravity.
"Very serious. I got the call this morning. The doctor said if he doesn't wake up within three days,
he'll fall into a permanent coma. Even if machines keep him alive,
he'll have at most one or two years left.
After all, relying only on IV nutrition and a respirator can't sustain life signs for long.
Once all the muscles in his body atrophy, his internal organs will gradually fail, and then...
he won't make it."
He paused, then added with a trace of sorrow in his tone,
"James is such a proud person. If he's conscious but can't move, can only lie in bed, barely surviving like this, do you think he'd be happy?
He'd probably want me to pull the plug immediately and end this undignified existence."
"No! Don't pull his plug!"
Emily seemed extremely agitated. She suddenly grabbed Tyler's wrist with surprising force and said urgently,
"James has always been strong. He definitely won't lose his will to live. There must be another way! There must be!"
Looking at Emily's reddened eyes and trembling fingertips, Tyler's gaze gradually became firm. He stared at Emily intently and said seriously,
"There is another way—you come back with me.
As long as you stay by James's side and talk to him every day, if he hears your voice, he'll definitely wake up."
