HAYLEY’S P.O.V
After our quickie, we managed to get our clothes off and go at it again.
I lay sprawled on his chest, one hand mindlessly stroking my hair while the other drew circles on my lower back. We were yet to talk about what happened with the officer. I wasn’t stupid, I knew there was more to it than what he told me.
“Jake,” I began slowly. “Are you going to tell me the truth about why the officer was here?”
There was silence for a full minute.
“No.”
I turned to him. “No?”
“The less you know, the better. All you need to know is that they will never know what happened. Everything is going to be fine, I promise.”
“You shouldn’t make promises like that. Anything could happen. You don’t get to go to jail, not now that-”
I exhaled deeply.
Maybe it was selfish of me to think this way. Charles was someone’s child after all and I could only imagine the worry and pain his mother was going through but I wasn’t selfless enough to give her closure at my own detriment.
“I want this Charles saga done with,” I said finally.
“It is done with. It will never be brought up again. I can assure you of-”
He didn’t get to finish his sentence because his phone rang loud. He didn’t move at first, choosing to let it keep ringing but it just wouldn’t stop. Whoever it was called back twice and Jake groaned as he grabbed it.
“Hello?”
I couldn’t hear the person on the other end but it was clear that Jake was not pleased with whoever it was. He frowned and hung up without waiting for them to finish speaking. I had never seen him do that to anyone before.
“Who was that?”
“No one important,” he placed a soft kiss on my hair before dragging himself out of bed. “I need to handle something right now. Are you going to be alright by yourself?”
I pursed my lips but shook my head.
He was acting weird and he knew it. I could have pushed, could have demanded an explanation, but I knew him well enough to know that he wasn’t going to give me one until he was ready. I watched him leave and waited until he shut the door behind him before I dragged myself out of bed.
I threw on one of his shirts and a pair pf shorts before dragging myself out of the room and towards Kate’s. I had barely knocked when she pulled the door open.
“I didn’t think you’d come to see me until tomorrow morning,” she drawled as she led me into her room.
“Why not?”
“Do you really want me to spell it out for you? I have no intentions of talking about my uncle’s sex life but-”
“I think I get it.”
I took a seat at the edge of her bed and she handed me a snickers bar. It was only then I realized the snacks laid out on her bed.
“I eat when I’m stressed, sue me.” she mumbled. I graciously took the bar for her, mumbling a thank you as I did. “Where’s Jake?”
“I don’t know. He said he had something to do.”
“Okay,” she sighed before continuing. “If you don’t want to talk about this, you can stop at any time but I am very curious and I’m going to ask because I need to be sure that I heard correctly when you said-”
“I’m pregnant,” I finished for her. “I can show you the ultrasound pictures if you want. Believe me, I thought it was a joke until I saw it.”
“Who knows?”
“My dad, Alana and Nick. Nick only knows because he was the one who took me to the pharmacy to get the test.”
She nodded slowly, as if deep in thought. “Would you have told me on your own?”
“Of course, I just- I wanted to be happy about it first. It’s not like I didn’t want the child or anything, there was just a lot going on and I didn’t have the time to think about it or even be happy.”
Her lips curled ever so lightly. “I guess I can understand that. I’m happy for you- both of you. You’ll make amazing parents.”
“I hope so,” I turned to her. “Enough about me, how’s your boyfriend.”
Her cheeks burned a bright shade of pink and she pushed her glasses higher up on her nose. It was fun to see her blush. It was obvious how much she liked this guy and I only hoped that he truly liked her the same way. It would wreck her if he didn’t.
“He wants us to do something together over the break next week.”
“What did you say?”
“Nothing yet. It feels serious, you know? He wants us to go on a little weekend getaway.”
“I don’t see what the problem is.”
“I’m just worried that things are progressing too fast. I’ve never slept over at his place before. Sure, I’ve been there and we’ve done things but I have never slept over and we haven’t had sex.”
“Do you want to?” I asked and I didn’t think it was possible, but her cheeks got redder.
“He always stops things before it goes too far, but if we go on this getaway, then-”
“Who is this man?”
She hesitated for a moment. “You cannot say a word to anyone about this. If it gets out, we will be in so much trouble.”
“Tell me.”
She swallowed deeply. “He’s a professor, he doesn’t teach me, but-”
My eyes widened in shock. I wasn’t judging her- far from it actually- I was just surprised.
“I didn’t know who he was at first. It sounds stupid now, but we met in a bar and we got to talking. I made out with him and the next morning, I saw him in the hallways.”
“That’s scandalous,” I said finally, not knowing what else to say. “But it’s also really hot.”
She let out a sigh of relief and I realized just how worried she was about my opinion. It made my heart warm.
“I think you should decide if this trip is something you want to do for yourself. If you want to have sex with him, then go for it. Men are not as good with control as they like to believe, especially when it is a woman they want to be with.”
“So, you want me to seduce him?”
“Exactly, and I know just how you should do it. Do you own any lingerie?” She shook her head and I clicked my tongue at her. “We have much to learn, sweetheart.”
After shopping for an ungodly amount of lingerie for Kate, I finally left her alone.
I was happy for her- truly.
I didn’t know this man, I didn’t know what he was like, but I trusted that she knew what she was doing. She didn’t tell me his name, But I was going to find out who he was, not to reach out to him or anything, but for security reasons. It was always good to have information.
I bumped into Jake while tapping away furiously on my phone.
His hands wrap around my waist, pulling me to a stop. “Are you okay?”
I hummed, not even looking up at him. I tried to walk past, but he wouldn’t let me. His hands remained around my waist, pulling me towards him.
“Where are you rushing to?”
“Nowhere, I’m just trying to find someone.”
His brows furrowed. “Do you want me to help you?”
I thought about it for a moment. It would be faster with Jake’s help, but Jake wasn’t stupid. If I told him who I was searching for, he would piece things together quickly, and I couldn’t imagine it ending well.
“No, thank you,” I said finally. “I’ll figure it out, I know I will.”
“If you change your mind, you know where to find me.” He placed a kiss on my forehead, his lips lingering on my skin. “We’re going somewhere tomorrow.”
My brows furrowed. “Tomorrow?”
“Around noon, don’t worry about the details, I’ll let you know as we go.”
“What about Kate?”
“She can stay on her own. I already told her about this so it won’t be taking her by surprise.”
I was impressed but not surprised by his methodical planning. “Where are we going?”
The corner of his lips quirked. “You’ll see.”
“I need to know so I can know how to dress.”
“I’ll lay out clothes for you.”
“But-”
“I have everything planned. Don’t worry about it.”
