The Masterpiece

The texts from the unknown bully glared at Elliot from their phone screen. Their hand shook as they set the phone down on their desk.

"I won't let them win," Elliot whispered, picking up their notebook.

The art show was only three days away. Ms. Chen had personally asked Elliot to submit something, saying their work showed "remarkable emotion." Despite everything happening with Jamie and the fake social media account, Elliot needed to finish their piece.

They stared at the halfcompleted drawing: a field under a night sky, filled with countless stars. Two silhouettes sat close together on a hill, looking up at the sky.

Elliot's phone buzzed again. This time, it was Jamie.

Sorry I missed your calls. My phone died. Can we talk tomorrow before school?

Relief poured through Elliot. Jamie was okay.

Yes, sure. Meet at the art room? 7:30?

The reply came instantly: I'll be there.

Elliot slept fitfully that night, dreams filled with nameless bullies and falling stars.

The next morning, Elliot arrived at the art room early. The smell of paint and clay filled the air as they set up their painting on an easel by the window.

When Jamie walked in, Elliot's heart sank. His eyes were tired, his shoulders hunched.

"You saw it," Elliot said.

Jamie nodded. "The whole team is talking about it. Coach called me last night."

"Jamie, I swear I didn't—"

"I know," he said, taking Elliot's hands. "I know it wasn't you."

Tears pricked at Elliot's eyes. "Someone's trying to hurt you, and they're using me to do it."

"I think I know who it is," Jamie said, his voice hard. "Derek wasn't at practice yesterday. And he's the only one who had access to my test papers when we studied together."

"What are we going to do?"

Jamie squeezed Elliot's hands. "We fight back. Together."

Ms. Chen entered the room, interrupting their talk. "Elliot! How's your piece going along? Oh, hello, Jamie."

"It's almost done," Elliot said, turning to their painting.

Ms. Chen studied the picture with a critical eye. "The feeling in this is powerful. The way the stars shine in the lake... it's your best work yet."

"Thank you," Elliot mumbled, cheeks burning.

"The art show is Friday night. I've saved a special spot for this piece." Ms. Chen squeezed Elliot's shoulder before going on to help another student.

Jamie stared at the picture. "Is that... us?"

Elliot nodded. "From that day in the rain. When you asked me to the winter formal."

Jamie's eyes softened. "It's beautiful." He lowered his voice. "Derek will be at the game tonight. I'm going to face him before he can cause more damage."

"What about the fake account? The messages?"

"I talked to my cousin. She works in cybersecurity. She thinks she can trace who created it."

The first bell rang, shocking them both.

"We'll figure this out," Jamie promised, brushing his fingers against Elliot's cheek. "Don't let them win."

After school, Elliot headed right to the art room. They needed to finish their work before Friday's show.

Hours passed as they mixed colors, adding depth to the night sky and clarity to the silhouettes. The field of stars reflected in a lake below, making perfect symmetry between earth and sky.

"Working late?"

Elliot jumped, almost knocking over their tray. Derek stood in the doorway, his letterman jacket bright against the barely lit room.

"What are you doing here?" Elliot asked, heart pounding.

"Just passing by." Derek stepped closer, eyeing the picture. "Pretty. Is that you and Jamie?"

Elliot began packing up their goods, uncomfortable with Derek's presence.

"You know, it's funny," Derek continued, picking up a paintbrush. "Jamie's been the golden boy for so long. Always perfect, always winning. But now..."

"What do you want, Derek?" Elliot's voice came out stronger than they felt.

"I want what I deserve." His friendly mask slipped. "I've worked just as hard as Jamie, but he always gets everything. The starting spot, the scout attention, the praise."

"So you decided to ruin his life?" Elliot couldn't keep the anger from their voice. "Created a fake account? Sent scary messages?"

Derek's eyes widened briefly, then narrowed. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Yes, you do. And we can prove it."

Derek laughed, but it didn't reach his eyes. "Nobody will believe you over me. Especially now that Jamie's missed the biggest game of the season."

A new voice spoke from the doorway. "I recorded everything you just said."

Megan stood there, phone in hand, a proud smile on her face.

Derek lunged for her phone, but Megan was faster. She darted away, putting a table between them.

"Delete that now!" Derek shouted.

"Or what?" Megan challenged. "You'll make another fake account? Send more scary texts? Too late, Derek. It's already been sent to Jamie, Coach Wilson, and Principal Garcia."

Derek's face paled. He looked from Megan to Elliot, then stormed out, kicking over a chair as he went.

Elliot's legs gave out, and they sank onto a stool. "How did you know?"

"Jamie called me after your morning meeting. We set a trap, and Derek walked right into it." Megan grinned. "Jamie wanted to be here, but Coach Wilson is meeting with the reporters right now. They're giving him another chance."

Relief washed over Elliot like a wave. "Thank you."

"That's what friends are for." Megan liked Elliot's painting. "This is lovely. Jamie's going to love it."

Friday night came, and the school gymnasium transformed into an art gallery. White sheets covered the walls, showing student artwork under carefully positioned spotlights.

Elliot's painting had the central place, just as Ms. Chen promised.

"You're a hit," Jamie whispered, appearing at Elliot's side. He looked more relaxed than Elliot had seen him in days. "Everyone's talking about your painting."

"How did it go with the scouts?"

Jamie's smile grew. "They were impressed. Said they liked that I stood up for what was right."

"And Derek?" "Suspended. The principal found proof on his computer linking him to the fake account. Coach is heartbroken, but..." Jamie shrugged. "Actions have consequences."

A crowd gathered around Elliot's painting, murmuring admiration. Ms. Chen clinked a spoon against a glass, asking for attention.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to announce this year's winner of the Ridgeview High Art Scholarship."

Elliot held their breath. They hadn't even known they were being considered.

"For exceptional talent and emotional depth, the scholarship goes to... Elliot Harper, for 'Field of Stars'!"

The crowd roared in applause. Jamie squeezed Elliot's hand as they made their way to the front, stunned.

As Ms. Chen gave them the certificate, Elliot noticed a familiar face at the back of the room. Ryan, looking awkward but determined, caught Elliot's eye and gave a small nod.

Later, as people began to leave, Ryan approached them.

"Nice painting," he said awkwardly. "I, uh, wanted to say I'm sorry. For everything."

Before Elliot could reply, Ryan handed them a folded note and quickly walked away.

"What is it?" Jamie asked.

Elliot opened the paper, read the message, and their blood ran cold.

"It's a warning," they whispered. "Derek wasn't working alone."
