Chapter 153 The End of Mooncrest Days
Malia’s POV
The morning sun over Mooncrest College didn't feel like the pale, watery disc it had been for months.
Today, it was a brilliant, triumphant gold, spilling over the gothic spires and washing away the shadows that had clung to these stone walls for centuries. The static in the air—the heavy, oppressive weight of the bloodline’s unrest—had finally settled into a peaceful, humming silence.
Vesper was gone. Imprisoned in a silver-lined cell deep within the High Council’s most secure facility, her influence over the school had been severed like a rotted vine.
I stood in the center of the Moonfall brothers’ private suite, staring at the graduation gown hanging on the wardrobe door. The deep crimson and charcoal fabric felt heavy, symbolic of a journey I never thought I’d finish. My skin still held a faint, ethereal radiance—a mark of the power that was no longer fighting me, but living within me, tempered and true.
The peace was interrupted by the sound of the heavy oak door swinging open.
Freddy and July burst in, their faces a frantic mosaic of shock, relief, and lingering horror. July was clutching a digital tablet so hard her knuckles were white, while Freddy looked like he’d just run a marathon through the thickest part of the Silverwood Preserve.
"You guys won't believe it," July gasped, dropping onto the ottoman and shoving the tablet toward Rowan. "The authorities... the specialized investigative unit... they found it. They found everything."
I felt Aiden’s hand slide into mine, his grip firm and grounding. "Found what, July?"
"Vesper’s hideout," Freddy said, his voice dropping into a low, somber register. "Not just a lab. A sanctuary of horrors. It was hidden behind the shifting walls of the old cathedral cellar—right under the school's foundations this entire time."
A chill that had nothing to do with the morning breeze crawled up my spine. "The missing students?"
July nodded, her eyes filling with tears. "Every single one of them, Malia. The ones from three years ago, the ones from last year... the ones who disappeared during the Blood Moons. They weren't dead. At least, not all of them."
My heart hammered against my ribs. "What do you mean 'not all of them'?"
"She had them in stasis," Freddy explained, pacing the rug with a restless energy. "Rowan, she was using them as 'batteries' for the dampening field. She couldn't kill them because she needed their latent magic to keep the Mooncrest bloodline from awakening prematurely. They found twelve students in the lower levels. They’re being transported to the medical wing now. Some have been under for years."
I looked at the tablet as Rowan scrolled through the images. Pictures of glass canisters, silver siphons, and pale, sleeping faces I recognized from old "Missing" posters in the student lounge.
"She wasn't just trying to control the bloodline," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow. "She was harvesting it. She was waiting for me to reach my peak so she could siphon the True Alpha energy into herself, using those students as a conduit."
The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. The victory over Vesper felt even more vital now, tainted by the horror of how close we had all come to becoming part of that collection. I looked back at my graduation gown. It represented a future that twelve other students had nearly lost forever because of one woman’s greed.
"The school is officially clearing their records," July added, wiping her eyes. "Principal McLunar is resigning effective immediately. The Board of Regents is taking over for the ceremony. They’re calling it the 'Dawn of the New Era.'"
"It’s about time," Cian muttered from the corner, his arms crossed. "Mooncrest has been a graveyard for too long."
I walked toward the large bay window that overlooked the quad. Below, I could see students gathering. They weren't huddled in fearful groups anymore. They were laughing, tossing frisbees, and setting up chairs for the graduation ceremony. The fear that had defined my life here—the fear of being 'other,' of being a scholarship mistake—had vanished.
Aiden stepped up behind me, his arms wrapping around my waist, his chin resting on my shoulder. His scent, that perfect blend of cedar and the sharp tang of a coming storm, anchored me to the present.
"Thinking about the move?" he asked softly.
"Thinking about how lucky we are," I whispered, leaning my head back against his chest. "We’re graduating, Aiden. We’re actually leaving this place in one piece."
"We're leaving it better than we found it," he corrected, his voice vibrating through my back.
He was right. The mate bond between us felt like a steady, glowing coal in my heart. It wasn't just a romantic connection anymore; it was the pillar of a new foundation. We had broken a cycle of corruption that had lasted a century.
I looked over at Rowan and Cian. Rowan was already on his phone, likely telling the High Council to back off, while Cian was helping Freddy pack the last of the training gear. We were a pack. We were a family.
"The Mooncrest Days are over," I said, watching a group of freshmen walk by without a care in the world.
"The Mooncrest Days are over," Aiden repeated, kissing the side of my neck. "But our days? Our days are just beginning."
I am Malia Mooncrest. I am the heir to an ancient power, the mate to a Moonfall Alpha, and a survivor of the darkest secrets this school had to offer.
And today, I was finally free.
