Chapter 152 Between Passion and Confusion

Chapter 152 Between Passion and Confusion
Wynter's POV

The path back from the lake felt longer than it should have, each step heavy with what I'd just witnessed. Rosalie's broken sobs still echoed in my ears, mixing with the obscene sounds of Connor and Evangeline that I desperately wanted to unhear.

I wrapped my arms around myself, but the chill I felt had nothing to do with the night air. It was something deeper, colder—a fear that had been lurking since I'd seen Connor's hands on Evangeline's hips, heard Rosalie's heart-shattering scream.

The Mate Bond is stronger than love. Stronger than choice. Stronger than everything.

Connor had promised Rosalie he'd stay away. He'd sworn he'd choose her. And yet, when biology called, when the Bond pulled—none of that had mattered. His promises, his love, his intentions—all of it had crumbled.

I waited in the shadows near the dormitory entrance, needing to see Rosalie make it back safely before I could leave.

After what felt like an eternity, I finally saw her stumbling up the path and entering the dormitory gate. Only then did I decide to leave.

I couldn't go back to our shared room. Not when my own mind was spinning with fears I couldn't voice to her.

What if that's all we are too?

The thought had been clawing at me since I'd left the lake. Chase and I had the Bond—the real, complete, cosmic connection that Connor and Rosalie lacked. We should be safe. We should be certain.

But what if the Bond was just biology? Just our wolves forcing us together regardless of what our rational minds wanted? Connor hadn't chosen Evangeline—the Bond had chosen for him, overriding everything that made him human.

What if Chase and I were the same? What if this overwhelming pull between us was nothing more than animal instinct dressed up as fate?

And what happened when reality crashed in? When Chase's father demanded he marry someone suitable—someone with Alpha blood, with the right connections, with everything Silvermoon needed? When Chase's rational mind, his duty, his future all pointed away from me?

Would the Bond be enough to hold him? Or would it crumble like Connor's promises, leaving me as broken as Rosalie?

Professor Ashwood's words from class echoed in my mind: "Being a Luna requires natural leadership ability. It's not something you can simply decide to become because of a Bond."

And my aunt's voice, from years ago: "You're cursed, Wynter. Death follows you. Your mother died because of you."

The fears compounded, building on each other until I could barely breathe. I needed Chase. Needed to know if what we had was real love—or just biology forcing us together.

Through the Bond, I felt his presence like a steady heartbeat. He was in his room—our room, really. Over the past weeks, I'd been splitting time between the dorm I shared with Rosalie and Chase's private quarters.

Tonight, I needed Chase more than I needed air.

When I reached his door, I typed in the code—0-8-1-3. The lock clicked open.

The moment I stepped through, strong arms wrapped around me from behind, pulling me back against a solid chest. The door swung shut, and suddenly I was surrounded by Chase's scent—pine and leather and something uniquely him.

"Finally," Chase murmured against my hair. "I was starting to think you'd forgotten I existed."

The normalcy of his greeting, the warmth of his arms—it all crashed over me at once. My eyes burned with tears I refused to let fall.

Before I could respond, his mouth found my neck, pressing soft, quick kisses against my skin. They were light, almost teasing—like a bird pecking for seeds—but each one sent heat through my body.

"Chase—" I started, my voice catching.

"You've been so busy lately," he continued between kisses. "Running every morning." Kiss. "Extra combat training." Kiss. "I've barely seen you."

His arms tightened around my waist, and I could feel his hardness pressing against my lower back.

Is it real? Or is it just the Bond forcing you to want me?

"I've been trying to—" Another kiss on that sensitive spot where neck met shoulder, and my words dissolved into a gasp that was half sob.

"Mmm," Chase hummed against my skin. "I know. And I'm proud of you." Kiss. "But I've missed you." Kiss. "Missed touching you like this."

One hand slid up to cup my breast through my shirt while the other dipped lower. The dual sensation made my breath hitch—not just with arousal, but with desperate need.

"Chase," I breathed, and this time his name came out like a plea—desperate, broken.

He must have heard something in my voice, felt something through the Bond, because his hands stilled immediately. He turned me around gently, his eyes searching mine with sudden concern.

"Wynter? What's wrong?"

And suddenly I couldn't hold it in anymore. The words came pouring out in a broken rush.

"I saw Connor and Evangeline," I said, my voice cracking. "At the lake. They were—they were having sex. And Rosalie saw them too."

Chase's entire body went rigid, his jaw clenching. "What?"

"He promised her," I continued, tears streaming down my face. "He swore he'd stay away from Evangeline. He said he'd choose Rosalie. But the Bond—the Mate Bond was too strong. And when it pulled, none of his promises mattered. He couldn't resist it."

"Wynter—"

"And it made me think—" My voice broke completely. "What if that's all we are too? What if the Bond is just biology? Just our wolves forcing us together regardless of what we actually want? What happens when your duty, your father, your future—when everything rational tells you that you shouldn't be with me? Will the Bond be enough? Or will you end up like Connor, unable to keep your promises because reality finally wins?"

Chase's hands came up to frame my face, his thumbs wiping away my tears with infinite gentleness.

"Hey," he said softly, his grey eyes locked on mine. "Look at me. Really look at me."

I met his gaze, and what I saw there—love, certainty, fierce determination—made my breath catch.

"The Bond didn't force me to love you," Chase said, his voice steady and sure. "It brought us together, yes. But what I feel for you—Wynter, that's not biology. That's choice. Every single day, I choose you. Not because I have to, but because I want to."

"But Connor wanted to choose Rosalie too—"

"Connor didn't have a Bond with Rosalie," Chase interrupted gently. "He loved her, but when his actual Mate appeared, his wolf recognized what it had been missing. We're different. You're my Mate, Wynter. My wolf chose you, yes—but so did I. My heart, my mind, everything that makes me who I am—all of it chose you."

"But what about your father?" I asked desperately. "What about Silvermoon's needs? What about—"

"Don't worry about my father's approval," Chase said, his voice softening with determination. "I'll make him see your worth, Wynter. Not because of the Bond, not because of Silvermoon's politics, but because you're the one I choose. The only one I'll ever choose. And I won't rest until he recognizes that too."

His hands tightened on my face, his forehead dropping to rest against mine.

"Do you understand?" he asked, his voice rough with emotion. "This isn't just biology. This is love. Real, conscious, chosen love. And nothing—not my father, not duty, not the whole fucking world—is going to change that."

The certainty in his voice cracked something open inside me. A sob tore from my throat, and then I was pulling him down into a kiss that was desperate and grateful and full of all the fear and love and need I couldn't put into words.

Chase kissed me back with matching intensity, his hands moving to grip my waist, pulling me flush against him.

"I've got you," he murmured against my mouth between kisses. "Whatever it is, I've got you. And I'm not letting go."

I kissed him harder, my hands fisting in his shirt, trying to pull him even closer.

"I need you," I gasped against his mouth, my voice breaking. "Chase, I need—I need to feel that this is real—I need to know—"

"I know," he interrupted, his own voice rough. "I know, baby. Let me show you. Let me prove it."

His hands moved to the hem of my shirt, and when he pulled it over my head, there was something almost sacred in the gesture. My bra followed, and then his mouth was on my breast, tongue circling my nipple with deliberate care.

"You're so beautiful," he murmured against my skin. "So perfect. Do you know how much I need you too?"

The words hit something deep inside me, and fresh tears spilled over. Chase looked up immediately, but this time he didn't stop. Instead, he kissed the tears away, his mouth trailing from my cheeks to my jaw to my throat.

"Don't stop," I whispered, my hands moving to his shirt buttons with trembling fingers. "Please don't stop. I need this. I need you."
