Chapter 41 THE MOONBORN LEGACY

Chapter 41 THE MOONBORN LEGACY

CHAPTER FORTY-ONE

The morning after the battle felt heavy. It was too still. The usual sounds of Blood Moon territory had vanished.

No laughter echoed from the training grounds, no playful arguments drifted between cabins. No young wolves chased one another through the trees.

Instead, the pack mourned. Smoke rose from funeral pyres prepared for those that died during the fight.

Healers moved tirelessly between the wounded, everywhere Anna looked, she saw the cost of war.

A warrior missing an arm. A mother crying beside her injured son. A young wolf staring blankly at the ground after losing his father.

The victory felt hollow because Draven had been right. It had only been a test and Blood Moon had barely survived it.

Anna sat alone on the porch of Chris's cabin, clutching the silver pendant in her hands. The metal felt warm against her skin, almost alive.

Since the battle, she hadn't stopped thinking about what happened. The silver light, the sudden surge of healing. Draven's reaction, and most importantly… The vision.

‘The blood remembers.’ The words haunted her.

She turned the pendant over carefully. Moon symbols covered every surface, ancient markings.

A language she didn't recognize but somehow a part of her understood. As if those symbols belonged to a forgotten memory buried deep inside her soul.

"You're staring at that thing like it owes you money."

Anna looked up, Chris approached carrying two mugs of Coffee.

Of course, a small smile touched her lips.

"You know me too well."

"I'd be worried if I didn't." He handed her a mug before sitting beside her.

For a while neither spoke. The silence between them felt comfortable after everything that had happened.

Eventually Chris sighed. "How are you feeling?"

Anna knew he wasn't talking about the battle or the injuries or the lack of sleep. He meant everything else.

The Moonborn bloodline, the visions and the newly found power.

She stared down at her coffee. "I don't know."
The honesty surprised neither of them.

Chris nodded slowly. "Fair enough." He shrugged slightly.

Anna laughed softly. "You always say that."

"Because it's true." He replied, locking eyes with hers for seconds. She leaned her head against his shoulder.

The simple contact eased some of the tension inside her chest.

\~~~~

Inside the council hall, Steve stood before a large map covered in markings.

Several scouts surrounded him attentively. The Beta looked exhausted with his eyes bloodshot.

His clothes were still stained from the battle, yet he remained focused. Planning and preparing, because someone had to. A young scout entered the hall on a run.

"Beta."

Steve looked up. "What is it?"

"We found their camp." Every wolf in the room immediately straightened.

Steve's expression darkened. "Where?"

The scout pointed toward the northern mountains. "Thirty miles north."

A murmur spread through the room. Steve stepped toward the map. "Numbers? How much are they?"

The scout swallowed, then answered. "At least three thousand."

Silence shot through the room. Blood Moon barely had six hundred fighting wolves. The room suddenly felt much smaller.

Steve's jaw tightened. Three thousand, and that was only the force they could see.

The realization hit everyone at once. The battle last night truly had been a test. Draven hadn't even used a fraction of his army.

\~~~

Meanwhile, Chris found himself standing inside the old Whitmore House office again.

The journals remained scattered across the desk. His father's handwriting filled page after page.

For years he had avoided this room. I tried to avoid the memories, the pain.

Now he wished he'd opened these journals sooner because every answer seemed hidden somewhere among these pages.

Hours passed, still Chris read.

Then suddenly, something caught his attention.

Draven's name.

His pulse quickened. He flipped back several pages, then forward again, reading carefully.

The journal entry had been written nearly twenty years earlier.

Chris's father's handwriting looked rushed. His eyes moved across the page, and slowly… The color drained from his face.

"No." The whisper escaped before he could stop it. He read the entry over and over again. Hoping he misunderstood.

But he hadn't. The truth sat plainly before him. Horrifyingly impossible and yet undeniable.

The office door opened, Anna stepped inside. Her eyes met Chris, immediately noticing his expression.

"Chris?"

He looked up slowly. She'd never seen him like this, not even during the war.

"What happened?"

For a moment he couldn't answer. He finally handed her the journal. Anna took it carefully. Her eyes found the passage. Her eyes widened with shock.

\~~~~

"Draven was not born a rogue."

"He was once Alpha of Moonfall Pack."

"He fought beside our ancestors during the First Territorial Wars."

"He was respected."

"Honored."

"Beloved."

"Until he became obsessed with immortality."

\~~~

Anna's breath caught immediately but she continued reading.

\~~~~

"The Moonborn refused him."

"The Goddess refused him."

"And in his desperation, he sought power elsewhere."

\~~~~

Her hands began trembling. "What does that mean?" She asked with a wavering voice.

Chris shook his head. "I don't know."

But deep down… He feared he already did.

Draven hadn't simply become evil, something had corrupted him. Something ancient and powerful.

If the journals were correct… It happened centuries ago.

\~~~

That evening, Anna had another vision. This time, she wasn't asleep. She wasn't touching the pendant. She wasn't even thinking about it.

One moment she was helping healers sort supplies.

Next, the world vanished. Darkness swallowed everything. Then came moonlight, bright with an ancient silver glow.

Anna found herself standing inside the temple once again. The silver-eyed woman waited for her. Calm and patient.

As though she'd known Anna would return. "You came back."

Anna frowned. "I didn't exactly choose to."

A faint smile touched the woman's lips. "Neither did I."

The answer confused her. "Who are you?"

The woman studied her for several moments, then finally answered.

"My name was Selene."

The name seemed to echo through the temple, ancient and familiar.

Anna's heart skipped. "You're Moonborn."

Selene nodded. "Yes, the first."

Anna stared. The first Moonborn Luna. The woman from the legends. The woman whose blood flowed through her veins.

The realization nearly stole her breath.

Selene stepped closer. "Draven is coming."

Anna laughed bitterly. "Trust me. We noticed."

For the first time, the ancient Luna smiled. A genuine smile but it vanished instantly and was replaced by sorrow.

"He cannot be allowed to complete the ritual."

Anna froze. "What ritual?"

Selene's expression darkened. "The one that requires your blood."

The temple seemed to grow colder.

Anna's pulse thundered. "What are you talking about?" She asked shakingly.

But before Selene could answer… The vision shattered.

\~~~

Anna gasped and stumbled backward slightly. The healer's cabin reappeared. Several wolves rushed toward her to help her upright, concern filled their faces.

But Anna barely noticed, only one thought remained in her mind. One horrifying thought.

Draven didn't want her dead…. He needed her alive.

\~~~~

That night, Steve led a covert scouting mission north. Only five wolves accompanied him. Their orders were simple. To observe and gather information. No fighting or playing hero.

Unfortunately, Steve had never been good at avoiding risks.

Hours later, hidden on top of a rocky cliff overlooking Draven's camp, he saw something that made his blood run cold.

Thousands of wolves filled the valley below. Campfires stretched endlessly into the darkness. Warriors, mercenaries, and an army of rogues but that wasn't what frightened him.

At the center of the camp stood a massive stone structure. Half-built and covered in strange ancient Moonborn symbols.

Steve's stomach dropped. It was a ritual site and standing beside it was Draven. He stood smiling as though victory was already his.

Then Steve heard him speak. The words carried through the night air. Confident and terrifying.

"The Blood Moon rises in seven days."

The wolves around him bowed. Draven looked toward the south. Toward Blood Moon territory and smiled.

"Then the Moonborn Luna becomes mine."

Steve's blood ran cold, he suddenly understood. The true attack wasn't the next day. It would happen on the night of the Blood Moon and they only had seven days left.
