Forest Meeting
Forest Meeting
The forest was dark and quiet as Elias and Kael ran. The only sounds were their quick breaths and feet hitting the ground. They ran until the camp lights disappeared behind them. When Elias finally stopped, his legs shaking, they were deep in the old woods.
"We should be safe here, for now," Kael said, looking back the way they had come. His golden eyes seemed to glow in the darkness.
Elias sank down onto a fallen log, his mind running. Everything had happened so fast—the truth spell, Darius's confession, Kael's secret, and now this wild escape. His hands were still glowing dimly, magic running just beneath his skin.
"You're an Omega," Elias said quietly, looking up at Kael. "All this time, everyone thought you were just an Alpha."
Kael's face tightened. "I'm both. The runes on my back hide my Omega nature from others." He looked away. "Three hundred years ago, a male Omega couldn't lead a pack. I did what I had to do."
"Can I see them?" Elias asked. "The runes?"
After a moment's pause, Kael turned and pulled his shirt up. In the moonlight filtering through the woods, Elias could see strange symbols carved into Kael's skin. They made a pattern like a tree with branches spreading across his broad back.
"They're beautiful," Elias whispered, reaching out without thinking.
When his fingers touched the marks, a spark of blue light jumped between them. Kael sucked in a sharp breath.
"Sorry," Elias pulled his hand back quickly.
"No, it's alright," Kael said, turning to face him again. "It didn't hurt. It felt... right."
Silence fell between them, filled with unsaid questions.
"Was Darius telling the truth?" Elias finally asked. "About my parents?"
Kael sat down beside him on the log. "I don't know. But he couldn't lie under the truth spell."
Elias tried to process this. Someone had killed his parents, and Darius had let it happen. And now Darius wasn't even human—he was some kind of shadow monster.
"What happened to him back there?" Elias asked. "That wasn't a normal wolf shift."
"No," Kael agreed. "I've heard stories of shadow spirits that can possess wolves, but I thought they were just tales to scare pups." He looked worried. "It seems there's more truth to the old stories than I believed."
Suddenly, Elias's hands flared with bright blue fire. He gasped, trying to shake it out, but the flames only grew.
"I can't control it!" he cried, panic rising in his throat. The fire spread up his arms, and the wind began to pick up around them. Small rocks rose from the ground, whirling in the air.
"Elias," Kael said quietly, "look at me."
Their eyes met, and Kael slowly reached out, taking Elias's hot hands in his own. Immediately, the fire changed color, going from blue to gold where they touched. Instead of spreading, it began to flow between them like water.
"How are you doing that?" Elias whispered, watching the magic dance across their joined hands.
"I don't know," Kael revealed. "I've never felt anything like this."
As the fire faded, the flying rocks dropped back to the ground, and the wind died down. For the first time since he could remember, Elias felt his power settle quietly inside him.
"The bond," Elias said. "It's real, isn't it? Not just pack magic, but something else."
Kael nodded slowly. "I've lived three ages, Elias. I've seen many things, but nothing like what happens when we touch." His eyes searched Elias's face. "Do you feel it too? Like we've known each other before?"
"Yes," Elias breathed. "Like a memory I can't quite catch. Like I've been looking for you without knowing it."
Kael's hand reached up, gently brushing a piece of midnight hair from Elias's face. "The old stories speak of soul ties that transcend time. Bonds formed lives ago, waiting to be rekindled."
Their faces were close now, breaths mixing in the cool night air. Elias could see every feature of Kael's face—the tiny scar above his right eyebrow, the flecks of amber in his golden eyes. Something pulled them closer, like gravity.
Just as their lips were about to meet, a twig snapped nearby. They jumped apart, instantly alert.
"Someone's coming," Kael whispered, getting to his feet. He stepped protectively in front of Elias, his body tense.
A figure emerged from the trees—not Darius or any of the pack, but the white-haired goddess, Aelara. She looked different now, less airy, almost human. Her color-changing eyes settled on a soft violet as she neared.
"The shadow hunter cannot track you here," she said. "Not while I protect you. But my power will not last long."
"Who are you?" Elias asked. "Why are you helping us?"
Aelara smiled sadly. "I have many names. Aelara is the one your ancestors gave me." She looked between them. "As for why I help you... let's say I have been waiting for a bond like yours for a very long time."
"What is Darius?" Kael demanded. "What does he want with Elias?"
"Darius Frostveil died two hundred years ago," Aelara said, shocking them both. "The creature wearing his skin is called a Void Walker—a being that feeds on magic and life." She turned to Elias. "And you, child, are the most powerful source of magic to emerge in centuries."
Elias felt cold. "He wants to... eat me?"
"Worse," Aelara said grimly. "He wants to use you. Your power could open doors between worlds—doors that should stay closed."
"The prophecy," Kael said. "That's what it's about, isn't it?"
Aelara nodded. "When shadow and light unite in love's embrace, ancient chains shall shatter time and space." She pointed to the two of them. "Shadow—an Alpha with hidden Omega blood. Light—an Omega with the power of the elements. Together, you could either save our world or destroy it."
"How?" Elias asked. "How could we destroy the world?"
Before Aelara could answer, the trees around them began to wither. Leaves curled and browned, falling like rain. The ground beneath their feet turned gray and dead.
"He found us," Aelara gasped, her form beginning to flicker. "The Void Walker is stronger than I thought."
"What do we do?" Elias asked, fear rising again.
"The ancient temple," Aelara said quickly. "Beyond the Crystal Falls. Complete the first bond there before the second moon rises."
"First bond?" Kael asked. "What does that mean?"
"There are three trials for a true bond," Aelara explained, her words fading as her form became more transparent. "Truth was only the beginning. You must face Power and Sacrifice still."
A terrible howl echoed through the trees, closer than seemed possible. Aelara looked over her shoulder in fear.
"Go north," she said, pointing deeper into the trees. "Follow the river to the falls. I will try to slow him."
"Wait!" Elias called as she began to disappear. "My sister—Seraphina—is she safe?"
Aelara's face was grim. "No one at the camp is safe while the Void Walker hunts. Your sister fights even now to protect the others."
With those ominous words, she vanished totally. The trees around them continued to die, a wave of decay spreading toward them.
"We have to run," Kael said, taking Elias's hand. "Now!"
As they turned to run, a shadow darker than the night rose up before them. Red eyes gleamed from its depths, and a voice that was and wasn't Darius's spoke: "Found you."
