Chapter 21
Chapter 21
Narrator's pov.
George Conners couldn't control himself; he turned red as his daughter Brianna narrated her appalling love story about Logan King's wedding proposal.
"No, really, Brianna," George said, his voice low and menacing. "You're not going to marry that...that...King boy, are you?"
Brianna lifted her head and blazed her eyes ready to defy. "Yes, Father, I am," she stated. "I love Logan, and I want to spend the rest of my life with him."
That was all. He turned a deeper red and slammed his fist on the table. "You're not going to marry him, Brianna," he repeated. "I won't allow it. The Kings are our enemies, and I won't let you marry one of them."
Now, Brianna took a deep breath and slightly reasoned with her father. "Father, please listen to me," she said. "Logan is a good man, and he loves me. He's not like the rest of the Kings. He's kind and gentle, and he would never hurt me."
George scoffed. "You're naive, Brianna," he said. "You don't know what you're getting yourself into. The Kings are ruthless and cunning, and they'll stop at nothing to get what they want."
Brianna shook her head. "That's not true, Father," she said. "Logan is not like that. He's a good person, and he loves me."
George's face turned irate. "I don't give a hoot what you think, Brianna," he said. "You're not going to marry Logan King. I won't allow it."
Brianna's eyes lit up with anger as she stood to meet her father. "I'm an adult, Father," she said, "I make my own decisions; and I've decided I want to marry Logan."
George's face turned purple with rage, as he slammed his fist once more onto the table. "You'll do as I say, Brianna," he shouted. "You'll forget about Logan King and marry someone else. Someone I approve of.”
Brianna shook her head. "I won't do it, Father," she said. "I'll marry Logan no matter what you say."
George's face had turned again cold and hard. "Fine," he said. "If you choose to marry Logan King, you shall do it without my blessing. And without my support. You're on your own, Brianna."
Brianna's eyes moistened now, but she still held her head high. "I'm prepared to do just that, Father," she told him. "I love Logan, and I am going to marry him regardless of whatever happens with you."
George Conners sat alone in his darkened study, taking sips from a glass of scotch. Hours spent sitting in solitary contemplation about the proposal for marriage to his daughter Brianna that was brought by the King guy, Logan.
At the same time, he couldn't help but think of the master plan designed against the King family. It took George years to strategize this plan, so that all opportunities could surface for him to strike.
But now with the marriage proposal of Logan and Brianna, the things got tangled. George was in a dilemma whether to give his approval to the wedding or not. On one hand, it could be a perfect opportunity to get closer to the King family, to infiltrate their inner circle and gather more information about their weaknesses.
The other thing is, George wasn't sure if he could trust Logan. He had always viewed him as a rival, a member of the always-stood-in-his-way family. Could he really entrust him with his daughter and her good treatment?
George sat there with his various pros and cons until he heard a knock on his door. His best assistant Victor was standing outside.
"Sir, I've some information you might want to listen to," Victor said in his low cautious voice. "
George raised an eyebrow. "What is it?" he asked.
Victor hesitated before finally saying, "It's about Logan King, sir. I have done the digging into the man's life, and I have found out he is not as clean as he seems; he has some secrets, sir. Secrets that can give a punch in his face and ruin his reputation and destroy his family business."
George's eyes narrowed. This was information precisely to bring down the King family and with Logan's secrets, he could twist them to his advantage.
"Tell me more," George said, his voice low and menacing.
Victor nodded and began to explain, telling George everything that he had learned of Logan's secrets. And as George listened, a plan began to form in his mind. Logan's secrets would be turned against him to destroy the King family and get what he wanted.
As for Logan and Brianna's marriage proposal, George had made up his mind. He would give them his consent, but only if they agreed to his terms. And his terms would be designed to destroy the King family, once and for all.
George Conners sat in his darkened study, languishing in the thick veil of revenge and destruction. He could hardly believe that his daughter Brianna would actually stoop low enough to get married to Logan King, the same Logan King who had pushed her mother into a fatal automobile accident nineteen years ago.
George's narrowed eyes were because of the accident that occurred some ages ago when Logan had just turned 18 years; he was trying to save his own mother's life. However, in the process, he lost control of the car and crashed into George's wife and killed her instantly.
George's anger and grief hunched within him enough to pledge after the accident to wreak vengeance on Logan King for what he had done, and it was only this time, many years afterward, that he got a chance to do so.
George's plan was to use Logan's secrets against him for tainting his and ultimately his family's business. With Brianna's marrying Logan, George would have the perfect opportunity to close in on the King family and draw out more of their weaknesses.
But as George sat planning this in his study, he felt like something about the plan wasn't right. He had always imagined Logan King to be an enemy ruthless and cunning enough to bear him hatred, but as he recalled that accident which proved fatal to his wife, doubts began to crop in about Logan.
Was it a mother's rescue or reckless driving? Was George's wife really dead because of Logan's actions, or was it something else altogether?
George had his head full of questions and doubts, but he put them aside. His emotions couldn't get the better of him; he had to remain focused on his goal: to destroy the King's family and avenge his wife's death against them.
With renewed determination, George rose from his seat and began pacing his study. He would leave no stone unturned in his quest, and make sure Logan King pays for what he has done.
