Chapter Seventy-Two

            Mirah

I shook my head. “Tell me what happened.” I simply said.

“Eat first-” Kaleb began saying, when his mother cut him off.

“I'm Roanna, and this is my son, Kaleb. We saved you.” She said, and a deep frown etched itself on my forehead.

“What are you talking about?”

“She's trying to say that we saved you from Prince Zeke and the others, who were about to kill you to save themselves.” Kaleb replied.

My breath turned shaky. I couldn't understand what he was going on about.

“Did he say anything about sending you in time?” Roanna prompted, and I froze.

No.

Zeke would never do that.

But these people had no cause to lie.

Did that mean Zeke's words about sending me back in time was a facade? Had he been planning to kill me instead?

Questions and more questions.

All of which left me feeling lightheaded.

I suddenly forgot how to breathe.

I couldn't see clearly.

“Tell me it's not true.” I demanded, tears blurring my vision, as I waited with bated breath for their response.

It had to be untrue.

My eyes were probably playing tricks on me.

Or not.

The scene playing out in front of me proved it. Zeke and the others had truly planned to kill me. I froze at a spot, making no sound. Even when Roanna retracted her magic, and the scene vanished.

“Do you believe us now?” She asked.

I couldn't respond. My heart was numb. A part of me wanted to argue. To prove that what I'd just watched wasn't true.

“Why did you save me?” I asked.

“You play a vital role in this game of power, Mirah. Your heart is a special kind, and that is why King Xavier is interested in you.” Roanna said, tapping her fork on her plate.

“King Xavier?” I repeated.

“Yes. You've met him. He's the king of the Rogue-brids, the exiled.” She continued.

“I don't understand. What role does a human have to play in the game of the supernatural world?” I asked, making no effort to hide my confusion.

“The Dark realm consists of nine pillars. The Vampires, The See-brids, The Shadowers, The PantherBrids, The Evens, The Rogue-brids, and three others.” She paused, and a downcast expression masked her face.

I leaned properly on the chair, and listened with rapt attention. My anger and hurt was momentarily forgotten. This was the closest I'd come to knowing about the drama I'd been plunged into.

“Millenniums ago, we all coexisted together. We all derived our power from the Source, which was located in the Rogue-brids' kingdom. At the time, Prince Zeke's great-grandfather; King Tyler was the king. He got consumed by greed, and attempted to take the Source for himself.” She paused again, and sipped on her glass of water.

“It was a great battle between all powers. The See-brids were accused of supporting the Rogue-brids, and King Tyler sent the Rogue-brids into Zandaya, where they'd be killed by the evil force there.”

I shuddered at the mention of Zandaya. I'd been there before. But I didn't bother mentioning it to Roanna. She didn't notice my uneasiness though, as she continued.

“King Tyler claimed the Source for himself, and created an inner core of The Prestigious Royal Circle. While on the surface it might seem like those men are merely enforcing order, and choosing the next king, they're guarding the Source which was illegally stolen.”

“And where do I come into this?” I asked, getting bored with the explanation already. Especially since I couldn't understand what was being said.

She smiled sadly. “The Source needs human blood. It's optional, and isn't necessary. But feeding human blood to the Source would ensure success on the part of the person who fed it.”

My head pounded, as everything suddenly began to make sense.

“Wait…” I raised my hand. “In essence, what you're trying to say is, if King Xavier gains hold of the Source, and he feeds my blood to it, he'd win the battle?” My voice shook.

Roanna nodded. “Yes.”

“It doesn't make sense. It doesn't necessarily have to be me. Why is King Xavier so interested in me?” From what I'd seen about Xavier, he wouldn't spend his time on something, if he had an alternative.

He could easily get another human, so why did he choose me?

“That's because you've captured the interest of a royal.” Her voice dropped even lower than before.

I frowned. “A royal?” And then I gasped.

Zeke.

My mind was heavy, and my head pounded furiously. This information.

It was heavy for me to bear.

“You called me Destined. What does that mean?” I turned to Kaleb who'd been an observer throughout our conversation.

He raised his head from his plate, still munching on a cookie. He shrugged in response.

“While the Vampires, and Rogue-brids need your blood to feed the Source, we need you in order to win the battle. Both sides seek power, but we seek reformation. Your kind heart and purity is what we need, to win this battle.” Roanna smiled at me, and my heart skipped a beat.

I didn't belong here. The Dark realm, or whatever.

This wasn't my place. The vocabulary used here was so foreign.

I belonged to Vermont. At Barcon, with my bartending job. With my best friends.

I was a human. This wasn't my place.

“I'm powerless,” I whispered.

“You aren't. Before we begin, are you ready to go back to being human again?” Kaleb asked.

I was about to ask him what he meant, and then I recalled that I wasn't even human anymore.

That godforsaken vampire had turned me.

Yes, he deserved what I'd done to him.

I hated him. I hated him so much.

He wanted to kill me. But these good people saved me.

My eyes glinted coldly. “What do I have to do?”

I was going to make them pay.

Zeke.

Xavier.

My father.

Jayden.

All the men who'd hurt me before. They'd pay. Because I was no longer the fragile human girl they knew before.

I was about to be transformed. To be changed.

‘Prepare for my return. I'd bring you all down to your knees.’

Roanna smiled brightly at me. “As you wish, Destined.” She tilted her head low, and so did Kaleb.

I felt strange. Like I was being consumed by a strange energy.
