Chapter Seventy-One

               Mirah

Evens?

“Evens?” I repeated, making sure my confusion could be heard through my voice. I knew about Vampires, See-brids, Shadowers, even Rogue-brids.

And now, Evens?

“Yes, Evens,” he nodded and regarded me briefly, before turning to lead us to wherever we were going.

“So, is that another type of vampire?” I asked, feeling more confused than before.

“Vampires?” He scoffed. “You ask so many questions, Destined. Settle the matters of today, and leave tomorrow to settle itself.” He said. I opted not to continue the conversation. My throat was so parched, as it was. And I really craved that hot bath.

“You are a newly turned Vampire. But I can sense the reluctance about that decision in you.” His words made me freeze.

These people knew about me. And they knew about what Zeke had done too.

They were dangerous.

I didn't answer. And he didn't press on. He led me to a large brown door, the top shaped like an arch. He placed his hand on the knob, and muttered some words. The door clicked open, and we walked in.

“Couldn't you just have opened the door like a normal person?” I asked him, scoffing at his display of power.

He faced me with a curled lip. “We are anything, but normal. And the door is enchanted to respond only to my command.”

“And why are you telling me that?” I retorted.

“In case you have plans of escaping.” He shrugged, and my blood ran cold.

'Cause I was really thinking of escaping.

I shifted my focus to look at the room, and my jaws unhinged. It carried a nice floral scent, with hints of mint and lillies. The large queen-sized bed was beautifully decorated with petals, and I couldn't help but shake my head.

Were these people perhaps hoping to impress me?

“This is your room, and the bathroom is that way. We'd be waiting outside, to serve you dinner.” He said, and made his way towards the door.

“You said the door was enchanted?” I called out, and he halted. “How the fuck do you guys expect me to get out?” I asked him, keeping my annoyance at bay.

I was obviously a prisoner in the hands of these people.

“Don't worry about that. Take your time, Destined.” Then he disappeared through the door.

Like, he actually moved through the door.

I stared unblinkingly at the door, wondering what the hell just happened.

The bathroom carried the same hint of mint and lillies. It was large, with a white bathtub at the side. The shower hung at the left corner. A large mirror showed my reflection, as I stepped into the middle of the room.

I still looked the same. Just a little bit tired.

My teeth itched, my fangs threatening to come out.

Fangs.

I was now a fucking vampire.

And just like an unwanted memory, I recalled what's happened in the past few weeks.

Zeke had turned me into a vampire without my knowledge.

I'd tried to stab him with a dagger. I actually did.

I gripped the edge of the sink, bending my head low and allowing the tears to rain down my cheeks.

My heart felt like it was burning. My whole body was.

When I looked up again, I was no longer in the bathroom.

This place smelled so ominous. So deadly. And I knew who it belonged to.

Xavier.

He was in my mind yet again.

“Show yourself!” I called out boldly.

“Should I tell you how pleased I am that you're anxious to see me?” His annoying voice sounded from the shadows, and then he appeared behind me, flicking his finger lightly down my neck.

I darted away. “Don't fucking come close to me. What's the meaning of all these? Were you the one behind my abduction?” I asked, because I didn't believe Kaleb's words one bit.

Provided his name was even Kaleb.

“Who abducted you?” He asked, his voice dropping dangerously low. He was now standing at my front, and waiting for an answer.

I swallowed. He didn't look pleased. That could only mean that he didn't know who'd taken me away.

But that was impossible. He was in my head. In my head.

And I still couldn't take off this cursed ring.

“Tell me now, Princess.” He reached out to stroke my neck, and I felt something fill my mind.

I was losing my mind.

No!

He was using a spell on me.

I willed myself to shake off its effects. But it wasn't working.

My eyes turned dreamy.

“Now tell me, Princess. Who took you away?”

“T-the E-” I began saying, when an anxious voice called out to me.

“Mirabella!” The voice sounded so much like Kaleb.

I shook my head, the spell breaking off.

I looked up to see my reflection in the mirror. I was back in the bathroom again. I looked behind me, expecting to see Kaleb.

But no one was there.

I frowned. I was sure he was the one who'd called out my name.

I wasted no time taking off my clothes, and going to stand under the shower. The hot water poured down my body, the steam staining the glass.

I moaned, feeling rejuvenated. I threw back my wet hair, and let the water pour down my chest.

My mind strayed over to what just happened.

Xavier wasn't the type to hide his deeds. If he was the one who'd abducted me, he'd say so.

And he'd wanted to know who'd taken me away.

That could only mean Kaleb was saying the truth.

But what were their intentions?

I was out of the bathroom thirty minutes later, and found a high-waist leather skirt, and a white shirt lying on the bed. Black knee boots were on the ground.

I got dressed, and true to his words, Kaleb was waiting for me outside. Without a word, he led me through the hallway, and down to a dining hall.

His mother sat at the head of the table, with many dishes spread out. My mouth watered, as I went over to take a seat. Though I wanted to dig in immediately, I clasped my hands and placed them on my laps.

“The dishes aren't to your liking?” She asked a moment later, seeing that I hadn't touched the meal.
