Chapter 75 What Is He Going to Do?

Rebecca's POV

I was packing my suitcase when I heard a knock on the door.

I stopped what I was doing and walked over.

It had to be my mom coming to call me downstairs. I didn't expect Steven and Everett to show up so soon.

"Mom, just give me a second. I'll be ready in a minute."

I said it as I pulled open the bedroom door.

But it wasn't Barbara. Steven was standing there.

His tall frame towered over me. I blinked in confusion, then quickly collected myself.

"Come in."

No wonder there was only knocking and no one came inside.

At first, I thought I had locked the door, which was why Barbara couldn't get in.

Now that I saw Steven, it all made sense.

Steven followed me into the room.

He must have noticed my phone lighting up every now and then, so he pointed it out.

"Your phone seems to have some messages."

I picked up my phone right away. Sure enough, messages were popping up one after another.

A smile spread across my face. My friends' comforting words came flooding in.

[Rebecca, don't worry. We're waiting for you to come back.]

[Rebecca, you're the best. Don't lose heart.]

[Rebecca, the closing performance is definitely yours. You need to pull yourself together soon.]

I smiled as I replied to each of their kind messages.

Being wrapped in that kind of warmth felt wonderful.

Click.

I heard the sound of a suitcase closing.

I stopped replying to messages and turned around.

Steven had already finished packing my luggage.

I quickly put down my phone. "Wait. I still have things I haven't packed yet."

Compared to my panic, Steven was much calmer.

"You mean the underwear you just folded? I already put it in the suitcase for you. Is there anything else you forgot?"

Hearing the word "underwear" come out of his mouth made my face burn bright red.

My lips trembled. Embarrassment flooded through me.

I honestly didn't know how Steven could say things like that so calmly.

Steven pulled my suitcase for me. I kept my head down and followed behind him in small steps.

I thought I needed some time to process what had just happened.

So embarrassing. I had planned to put those things away myself, but once I started replying to messages, I completely forgot.

I came downstairs.

Everett shoved the last cookie into his mouth and hurried over to me.

"Rebecca, darling, I'm so happy to see you."

He gave me a big hug. I hugged him back lightly, but my arms barely touched him.

Steven was still holding my luggage. What would it look like for us to be hugging like that?

Barbara stuffed the packaged cookies into my arms.

"Take some. You can eat them on the road."

I nodded slightly. Barbara's cookies were actually pretty good. Maybe someone would want them if they got hungry during the drive.

Steven put the luggage in the trunk, then walked back to us.

He spoke slowly. "Why are you two just standing here? Get in the car."

Everett looked at me with pleading eyes. I could only sigh and walk to the passenger seat.

"Fine. The back seat is all yours."

Everett happily pulled open the car door, not forgetting to add a few words.

"Babe, thank you. I really need that back seat space."

Steven glanced at both of us, then got into the driver's seat.

Everett had already stretched out in the back. He had his arms behind his head, looking perfectly comfortable.

Steven fastened his seatbelt, then looked at me.

I blinked innocently. "If having someone in front bothers you, should I go to the back instead?"

Steven sighed and leaned toward me.

He came closer and closer. Watching him move, I held my breath.

We were too close. So close that I could clearly hear his breathing.

I stared at his movement and swallowed quietly. What was he doing?

His hand was already reaching over. That large, strong hand moved closer and closer to me. My heartbeat quickened with every inch.

His hand passed me and pulled the seatbelt across.

Click. The seatbelt locked into place.

I looked up and met his eyes. Those deep eyes made you want to look away, but I didn't want to seem too timid.

In that moment when our eyes met, time seemed to stretch. I had never felt time pass so slowly.

Something seemed to be churning in his eyes. But before I could get a good look, Everett's voice rang out.

"Steven, can you turn on the heat? I'm a little cold."

Steven turned to turn on the heat. I took the chance to pretend nothing had happened and stared out the window at the scenery.

Steven drove very smoothly. Just like him as a person—reassuring.

The road ahead was still long. I didn't know how much longer I could stand this quiet atmosphere.

Steven was different from Everett. Everett always had endless things to say. He never let the atmosphere go cold.

But Steven was very different. He was quiet.

I wasn't quite used to that kind of silence. Especially when it was just the two of us up front. It always felt a bit awkward.

Luckily, even when Everett was asleep, he still made his presence known.

Snoring came from the back seat. The car wasn't so quiet anymore. Listening to that rhythmic snoring, I couldn't help laughing to myself.

Steven must have noticed. He glanced sideways at me.

"What are you laughing at?"

Still smiling, I looked at him.

"Steven, don't you think Everett's snoring has a rhythm to it?"

Steven raised an eyebrow. He listened for a moment, then agreed.

"It really does."

Getting his agreement, I nodded eagerly. "Maybe in his dreams, he's throwing a huge party."

Steven kept his eyes on the road, chatting casually with me.

"That would be very him."

I opened the bag of cookies I had been holding. "Do you want one?"

He didn't turn his head, but asked in a calm tone, "I'm driving. Can you feed me one?"

Hearing that, I immediately held out a cookie.

He turned his head and bit it. His cool lips brushed against my fingertips, and I almost pulled my hand back.

Compared to my fluster, he was much more composed.

"Thank you, Rebecca."

I watched him chew. My gaze drifted to the scar on his face.

When he wasn't talking, he really had an overwhelming presence. I hadn't noticed it before, but there was something dangerous about him.

That reminded me of the information I had found online.

I stared at the scar on his face and asked quietly, "The scar on your face—was it from Operation Dark Serpent in Vyrthara?"
