Chapter 69 It's Him!

Chapter 69 It's Him!

Rebecca's POV

The doctor let go of my eyelid, and the harsh beam from the flashlight finally went out.

My head was buzzing. The doctor walked toward the door, and I followed his gaze.

Backlit by the hallway lights, a tall figure stood by the door, his outline clearly visible to me.

It was Steven.

Even though I couldn't see his face clearly, I knew the person standing next to my parents was him.

But hadn't he left angry?

How did he know I was here, and why had he been waiting outside the hospital room all this time?

I was still thinking about these questions when the nurse stuck a needle in my arm.

My breathing got slower and slower, my brain felt like someone had hit the pause button, and my eyelids were too heavy to lift.

I didn't want to sleep, but I had completely lost control of my body. I couldn't even move my arms.

If I hadn't fallen asleep so quickly, I really wanted to ask him why he was here.

And he seemed to be getting along well with my parents. I was curious about when he'd managed to pull that off.

I felt someone wiping my arm with a towel. The cold, damp sensation made me uncomfortable.

Who was this rude person, just touching someone else's hand like that?

I struggled to flutter my eyelids, desperately trying to open my eyes to see who this "rude" person was.

He was crossing the line more and more—his hand had even reached my forehead.

I suddenly opened my eyes and met a pair of deep eyes. "Steven..."

He quickly pulled his hand back, looking a bit nervous. Steven spoke tentatively, "Rebecca, are you—are you uncomfortable? Should I get the nurse?"

I shook my head slightly and used my eyes to signal him to raise the bed a bit. I wanted to sit up.

Outside the window, a crescent moon hung in the black sky. It was already evening.

Steven placed a pillow behind my lower back, his tone gentle and careful. "Is this better?"

I looked straight at him. When did he become so thoughtful?

I'd never really observed him carefully before. Now I realized he looked exhausted. His eye sockets were sunken, like he hadn't slept in days.

Stubble had sprouted on his chin. His usually clean-cut face now carried that grayish-white exhaustion under the hospital room lights.

"Haven't you slept in days?"

Steven sat down beside me and pressed a cup of water into my hands. "I'm okay, just these past couple of days. Drink some water first."

I held the cup with both hands, my gaze never leaving him.

"Tonight, you're not planning to rest either?"

He nodded, then seemed to notice the concern in my eyes and immediately shook his head.

"Maybe I'll make do on that little sofa over there for the night."

I immediately responded, "If I don't wake up..."

"If you don't wake up, I'll stay with you. I'll wait until you wake up, until the doctor says you're really okay, then I'll sleep."

Listening to him say these words one by one, my heart suddenly skipped a beat.

Why was he being so good to me?

Maybe it was because the hospital room was too quiet tonight, or maybe Steven was too gentle today—gentle enough to make me a bit flustered.

Tears slid down my cheeks. He reached out and carefully wiped the tears from the corner of my eyes. "Why are you crying?"

I looked up at him, tears falling silently, my voice tight. "Will I never be able to perform on stage again?"

I shouldn't be crying here, but I was really scared.

I was afraid the opportunity I'd worked so hard for would slip through my fingers.

If I really lost it, I didn't know what I'd become.

I looked at him with an almost stubborn expectation. I hoped he'd give me good news, but I was also afraid he'd say something I couldn't handle.

His eyes held a calm reassurance. "Your voice is very hoarse right now. Take a sip of water first, then I'll tell you the answer, okay?"

It was like a fair exchange. I felt I should agree.

I lowered my head and took a sip of water. My dry, cracked lips finally felt somewhat normal after touching the water.

I looked up at him again. Without any hesitation, he spoke directly. "Rebecca, Serena believes you'll be fine. She and Alfonso are both working hard to keep this spot for you."

To me, this was like the hand pulling me up from deep water. I couldn't help but take a few more sips of water.

His almost burning gaze made me too embarrassed to look directly at him. I instinctively wanted to break the silence.

"You're here taking care of me, won't your girlfriend..."

Before I could finish, he already understood what I was asking. His tone suddenly became serious. "Rebecca, I don't have a girlfriend."

The words I was about to say stuck in my throat. "But Grace said your first love..."

His face darkened immediately. "Grace knows too much."

My heart tightened. His voice turned cold all at once, and his whole presence became sharp.

"You... you're not actually going to do something to her, are you?"

Steven frowned at me. "Is that what you think of me?"

I lowered my head guiltily. Of course I didn't really think that, but his expression just now was too frightening.

I instinctively felt that with that kind of expression, he really could back someone into a corner.

I heard him sigh softly. Steven reached out and turned off the small reading lamp by the bed.

The bed behind me slowly lowered. In the darkness, I couldn't see his face clearly, only a silhouette not far away. He leaned down slowly, his angular face getting closer and closer.

My breathing slowed. I didn't know why, but at this moment, I closed my eyes.

He gently pulled up the blanket and covered me with it. His voice carried a hint of helplessness.

"You should rest."

I blinked. Did I really need to sleep more? I'd already been unconscious all day.

After he said this, the room suddenly fell silent.

Though my eyes were closed, I could clearly feel he was still sitting there. In this darkness, those eyes that always made me nervous were watching me.

The hospital room was too quiet, too dark. I couldn't even hear his breathing clearly at one point.

This almost soundless environment made me uneasy. I spoke tentatively, "Steven, can you come a little closer to me?"

After I said this, I was met with a long silence. However, I heard his breathing become heavier.

Maybe he wasn't willing to get closer. Otherwise his breathing wouldn't have suddenly become so obvious.

Actually, he was already sitting on the edge of the bed, already very close to me. I should have been satisfied.

The fact that he was willing to stay here with me was already enough to make me feel safe.

"It's okay, if you don't want to, you can refuse."

I knew my request was a bit much. It would be reasonable if he refused me.

I turned my body away, my back to him. Maybe this way, I'd be less embarrassed.

I thought tonight would end in this silence.

Just then, a corner of my blanket was lifted, and cold air immediately rushed into the covers.

I immediately turned around, eyes wide, looking at Steven who had already stood up...
