Chapter 68 Signs Of Response Appear

Chapter 68 Signs Of Response Appear

Steven's POV

The silence around me made me more and more uneasy.

I couldn't accept seeing her lying in a hospital bed like this. She was such a strong person.

She had performances to attend. She should be standing under the stage lights, not lying here.

I held her thin hand tightly, hoping the warmth from my palm could reach her.

I prayed over and over in my mind, 'Lord, if you really exist, please let her wake up.'

I lowered my head and gently kissed the back of her hand. At that moment, I truly realized how out of control I was.

I had actually fallen for my own brother's girlfriend.

Looking at her pale face, my heart felt like someone had twisted it hard. She was so good, why did this have to happen to her?

She should be shining on stage, not lying in a hospital room reeking of disinfectant, kept alive by cold machines.

I stared at her face, my gaze carrying a tenderness I hadn't even noticed myself.

I had to admit, I really had fallen for her.

This wasn't just casual liking—it was love.

I think I had fallen in love with her.

I didn't dare think about what I would have become if I'd heard the news that she had died.

Thank God, she was still alive.

I'd seen too many partings between life and death, and I'd spent a long time in hospitals myself.

But I'd never been as afraid of this place as I was now. I was scared that the next second I'd hear the worst news.

At least now, she was still lying right in front of me. I believed she would get better.

I gripped her hand even tighter. Dear girl, please wake up soon.

I pressed my forehead against the back of her hand and closed my eyes.

Alright, I give up. I've completely lost to you. I really love you.

I don't want to leave you. No matter how you treat me later, I will love you.

This was the truth I had to face.

I suddenly opened my eyes, my gaze falling on that pale hand. She moved slightly.

She really seemed to move. I stared hard at her hand, but after that instant, there was no more movement.

Everything felt like my imagination.

No matter how long I stared, her fingers didn't move again.

My gaze gradually dimmed. She hadn't woken up. She still hadn't woken up.

The doctor clearly said Rebecca's vital signs were very stable, so why wouldn't she wake up?

What was she hiding from?

I carefully recalled what Serena had said earlier.

She stood in the hallway, shaking her head and sighing, "She shouldn't have had this accident."

Accident? Was what happened to Rebecca really just a simple accident?

If it was just an accident, why did she seem to be refusing to return to this world? It didn't make sense.

How could a perfectly good light in the practice room suddenly explode and fall?

I'd heard Rebecca mention the classroom lights before.

Because of some electrical work, that crystal chandelier had problems. Rebecca said her classmates all knew that the switch for that light couldn't be touched.

I just didn't know whether this new teacher Alfonso knew that switch couldn't be touched.

In the hallway earlier, his guilt didn't seem fake. Maybe that incident wasn't directly caused by him.

But usually only the teacher and student are in each practice room. It couldn't have been Rebecca who flipped the switch herself.

Then who else could have been there?

I shouldn't have fought with Rebecca back then. If we hadn't argued, I should have been the one picking her up that afternoon, not Everett.

Everett.

He was the one who went to pick up Rebecca. Him.

Could it be him?

I looked at Rebecca, her eyes still tightly closed, and the doubt in my mind gradually turned into a guess I could almost say out loud.

If it wasn't him, why would Rebecca seem so unwilling to face what happened?

I stared at her with a complicated expression. So, could the reason she wouldn't wake up be related to Everett?

My heart kept tightening. I had no evidence to prove Everett was connected to this accident.

And I didn't want to believe that Everett would do such a thing.

He was definitely immature, playful, and often messed things up—that wasn't unusual for him.

But I was even more unwilling to believe he would deliberately hurt someone.

Looking at Rebecca's completely colorless face, I silently prayed in my heart.

Rebecca, don't punish yourself for someone else's mistake, okay?

Wake up. There are still many people in the real world who love you.

Please trust me. I'll help you find the truth. Even if that person really is Everett, I won't let him off.

I'll even beat him up myself until he pays the price.

I lifted one hand and gently placed it over her eyelids, pressing a devoted kiss on her forehead.

Fairy tales always say Sleeping Beauty will be awakened by a destined kiss.

Rebecca, if you're my princess, then give me a chance to be the prince who can call you back.

Just then, the skin under my palm trembled slightly, and I suddenly opened my eyes wide. She seemed to be responding.

I stared intently at Rebecca's face, my eyes full of hope. Please don't let me down.

I missed her so much. I missed her bright eyes, missed those lively expressions on her face.

This time she didn't let me down. Her eyelashes trembled lightly, her lips parted slightly, and some hoarse syllables slowly squeezed out.

To hear what she was saying, I brought my ear close to her mouth.

A faint voice reached my ear, "Steven..."

The shock that flashed across my face was almost impossible to hide. I couldn't believe what I'd just heard.

I suddenly looked up and met a pair of familiar eyes slowly coming into focus. My hand immediately pressed the call button by the bed.

"Doctor, she's awake!"

I shouted down the hallway, completely ignoring that this was supposed to be a quiet hospital room.

This time, I didn't care if people thought I was rude. I was just too excited.

The doctor rushed in, followed closely by Rebecca's parents.

Barbara's eyes were full of tears as she looked at me. "Steven, thank you, thank you so much."

I smiled somewhat awkwardly. "Ma'am, please don't say that. It's Rebecca's own strong will that made her wake up."

Barbara shook her head, and Johnny used a handkerchief to wipe the tears from her face.

"No, Steven, this is your doing too."

"We stayed with her in the room for five hours. We heard her calling your name inside."

"We thought she was going to wake up, but no matter how we called her, she wouldn't open her eyes."

Barbara gripped my arm tightly, her eyes looking like she'd finally found her last lifeline. "Steven, it's you. It's because you're here that she woke up."

The doctor interrupted our conversation. Looking at our tense faces, he finally showed a relaxed smile.

"Congratulations, she's doing well."

"The patient just woke up and is a bit emotional. We gave her a sedative. She needs good rest today."

We nodded repeatedly and stepped out of the room together. I leaned against the door frame and looked through the small window.

She lay quietly on that bed, and my heartbeat finally returned to a normal rhythm. I knew she'd made it through the most dangerous part.

She wouldn't become a vegetable. She would slowly recover, return to the stage, and stand under the lights again.

I gazed at her figure, my mind churning with all kinds of thoughts, but I couldn't say a word.

Just now, did she really call my name?

If all of this was real, then why would she call out my name first?
