Chapter 67 What Is Your Name?

Chapter 67 What Is Your Name?

Steven's POV

Rebecca's parents went in to see her first. The lights in the long hallway were quiet and cold.

Serena walked up to me, looking me up and down. "I know you."

My heart suddenly tightened. How would Rebecca's teacher know me?

I looked up at her. Away from the classroom, she seemed much more relaxed.

"Ms. Clark, I've heard about you too."

She just smiled faintly after hearing that. "Young man, you still don't understand what I mean."

I blinked, confused for a moment.

Serena looked at Everett, her tone becoming more thoughtful. "Do you know how I know about you?"

She was Rebecca's teacher. If she knew my name, there was only one likely reason.

I nodded. "Rebecca mentioned me to you."

Serena showed an expression of approval. "Yes, she talks about you often. You're different from him."

I followed her gaze and quickly understood who "he" was.

She continued, "I've been teaching Rebecca for so long, and you're the only person she always mentions, the only one who makes her feel safe and happy."

Normally, hearing words like this, especially about Rebecca, would make me feel proud. But right now, with her still lying in that hospital room, I couldn't feel happy at all.

We had been sitting outside quietly waiting for news, the atmosphere tense but barely stable. Then suddenly something else happened.

Alfonso suddenly collapsed on the floor, passing out completely. Serena immediately called for medical staff. She was the only one here who really knew Alfonso, so naturally she took responsibility for staying with him.

After the chaos, the hallway became quiet again. Only the three of us from my family were left.

Elsie walked up to me. "Steven, Everett is really shaken up. I need to take him to rest."

When I heard those words, I just felt my chest tighten.

He was shaken up? He wasn't the one covered in blood. He wasn't the one lying in intensive care.

The one who actually went through all this was Rebecca. She was still in that cold hospital room, tubes all over her body.

Why was no one thinking about her first, but instead worrying about someone who was barely hurt?

I held back my anger, knowing this was a hospital and it was already the middle of the night. This wasn't the place to lose my temper.

More importantly, I had no right to question him. He was Rebecca's official boyfriend.

And in everyone else's eyes, I was just her friend at most.

Maybe I wasn't even trying to hide my emotions. The anger in my eyes was completely exposed.

Everett obviously shrank back behind Elsie, like a startled animal.

Elsie reached out and patted my shoulder. "Steven, don't scare your brother."

I lowered my head, no longer blocking their way. I felt it was so unfair to Rebecca.

Sometimes I really don't understand why my parents always favor Everett like that.

Even though he's an adult, in their eyes he's still someone who needs to be coddled all the time.

The long silence let my emotions slowly settle. Time felt stretched out.

I couldn't help wondering if she was lying in there alone, would she feel lonely?

Then I dismissed that thought. Her parents were both with her. At least right now she wasn't completely alone in that room.

Without realizing it, I actually fell asleep leaning back in the chair.

When I suddenly opened my eyes, I saw two figures standing in front of me and immediately stood up.

"Mr. and Mrs. Rodriguez, how is Rebecca now?"

Barbara withdrew her hand from my shoulder. "Good boy, how did you fall asleep here?"

I smiled sheepishly. "Sorry, I shouldn't have fallen asleep."

She shook her head gently. "It's okay. What's your name?"

I stood up straight and answered seriously. "Mrs. Rodriguez, my name is Steven. I'm the oldest son of the Harris family."

She looked around. In the empty hallway, I was now the only one left.

Rebecca's father Johnny's face was dark, his hands behind his back. "Where's Everett? Isn't he Rebecca's boyfriend?"

"His own girlfriend had such a serious accident, and he's not even here?"

When Everett was mentioned, I didn't really want to say much. But since he asked, I couldn't not answer.

I tried to keep my tone sincere. "He was pretty shaken up today and needs rest. My mother already took him home."

Johnny snorted. "And he's supposed to be Rebecca's boyfriend. Not being here at a time like this is really disappointing."

I was part of the Harris family, and Everett was my brother, but I couldn't find a single word to defend him.

Barbara looked at me again, her eyes gentle. "Steven, do you want to go in and see her?"

The question came so suddenly, my heart immediately tightened. "Can I really go in?"

Johnny glanced at me. "Go ahead. Right now, you have that right."

I froze for a second. What did he mean by "right"?

I walked toward the hospital room. Behind me, I heard their conversation.

"The name Rebecca was calling inside, it should be his, right?"

"Yeah, I think so. Hope this boy can wake her up."

"Steven seems nice. He was willing to stay outside the whole time."

"Exactly. Everett didn't even leave a word before leaving."

"The fact that Rebecca calls Steven's name shows he's very important to our daughter."

"I think Steven's good too, at least much better than Everett. If only he were our daughter's boyfriend."

I didn't hear the rest clearly. I had already reached the door of room 521.

I looked through the small window in the door at the person inside. She was lying there quietly. My chest tightened. My hand was on the door handle, but I didn't have the courage to push it open for a moment.

I took a deep breath. I couldn't keep standing outside, and I didn't want to leave her alone in that cold hospital room.

She had always been afraid of facing darkness alone. I should go in and stay with her.

I finally pushed the door open. The sound of machines beeped rhythmically in the room. The breathing tube wound around her face, making her face look even paler and smaller.

Her body was full of tubes.

The wounds on her face had been treated. There were still bruises on her forehead, but she looked much cleaner than when she first arrived.

No more blood covering everything in sight. She was still alive, and that made me breathe a sigh of relief.

As long as she was still here, that was more important than anything.

I held her cold hands in both of mine, my forehead gently resting on the back of her hand.

My voice was tight. "Rebecca, please wake up, okay?"
