Chapter 1278 How Could Someone Die for No Reason?
"I've missed you so much."
"Me too."
The moment Alexander finished speaking, Victoria immediately echoed him.
Her heart soared knowing the longing was mutual, and her mood lifted even more.
Alexander watched her smile bloom across her face, his gaze gradually drifting lower.
Victoria's lips were suddenly claimed, and her cheeks flushed crimson in an instant.
They were right at the office building entrance, for heaven's sake.
But still...
Shy as she was, she felt a rush of satisfaction from his public display of affection. She couldn't help but reach up, hooking her arms around his neck to deepen the kiss.
Later, on the drive back, Victoria remembered something important. "Mom called earlier. Adrian and Diana are bringing their partners home for dinner tonight, and she wants us to come too."
"Let's skip it. I made reservations at a hotel."
Alexander glanced over at her.
"We should go. Otherwise, Grandma, Grandpa, Mom, and Dad will all be disappointed."
Victoria felt bad about letting the family down.
"Missing one dinner won't hurt. We have family gatherings every week anyway."
"But we see each other every day too. Please?"
Victoria tilted her head up, her voice sweet and coaxing.
Alexander looked at her helplessly, then leaned his face closer. "Kiss me first."
Victoria immediately reached for his face, found his lips, and tilted her head up to press another kiss there.
"Fine, you win. But next time, listen to your husband, okay?"
Alexander pulled her close as he spoke.
"Deal. Next time I'll do what you say."
Victoria nestled into his embrace, holding him tight. She especially loved being close to him like this.
Three days later, they found Arthur. But he'd been dumped at the police station entrance along with evidence of his crimes.
He was stuffed inside a soaking wet burlap sack, as if he'd just been hauled out of water. When they opened the sack and revealed him, he wasn't wearing a stitch of clothing, and his body was covered in cuts.
Faye had just arrived at Zachary's office when she heard her son had been found. She immediately clutched her phone, her voice shaking with excitement. "Is it true? You really found him? How is Arthur? Let me talk to him, please."
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Montgomery. I'm afraid he's not in any condition to speak with you right now. Please come to..."
The officer gave her an address and hung up.
Faye suddenly had a terrible feeling, then immediately turned to the man working at his desk. "Mr. Ward, please help me."
Zachary barely glanced up, his eyes cold as they settled on her. "You look fine to me."
"It's my son. Your son-in-law is in trouble."
Faye quickly added that last part, afraid he wouldn't help otherwise.
Zachary responded with a cold laugh. "Your son's ambitions were too big. There's nothing I can do."
Yes, he refused that easily.
"Nothing you can do? How can that be? In all of Ankenra City, if even you can't save my son, then who can?"
"If my guess is correct, your son was the one who had Isabella kidnap the Harrington family's daughter-in-law and beat her until she was permanently disabled, wasn't he?"
Zachary's tone remained unhurried.
Faye fell silent. The silence stretched on so long that Zachary understood it as confirmation.
"Your son has done too many terrible things and crossed people he should never have crossed. Frankly, he might actually be safer in prison. If he gets out..."
Zachary trailed off, shaking his head.
Yes, Faye was smart enough to understand immediately. Her son was in more danger on the outside.
But how had things come to this?
"His business was doing so well. Why would he die? And what about your daughter if he does? What about the baby she's carrying?"
