Chapter 33 The Moment Everything Shifts

Chapter 33 The Moment Everything Shifts
POV: Rafe Vega

“Again!”

Coach’s voice cuts across the field.

Sharp.

Relentless.

I reset my stance.

Helmet low.

Cleats digging into the turf.

Everything tight.

Everything controlled.

That’s how it’s supposed to be.

No distractions.

No hesitation.

Just the play.

The hit.

Execution.

“Move, Vega!”

I move.

Fast.

Clean.

Drive through.

Finish.

But it’s off.

Not enough for anyone else to notice.

But I do.

Half a second late.

Half a step behind.

“You’re thinking,” Coach snaps.

“I’m not—”

“You are.”

My jaw tightens.

Because he’s right.

And I hate that he’s right.

“Lock in,” he adds.

I nod once.

Reset.

Again.

But it’s still there.

That pull.

That feeling like something is about to happen.

A whistle blows.

We break.

Coach starts pacing.

Talking about discipline.

Execution.

Focus.

I barely hear him.

Because something shifts.

Not loud.

Not obvious.

Just—

different.

I turn.

Half irritated.

Half distracted.

And then I see her.

Standing by the fence.

Watching me.

Everything else—

stops.

The field.

The noise.

The team.

Coach.

Gone.

Because she’s here.

Not supposed to be here.

Not expected.

But here.

For a second—

I don’t move.

Because I don’t trust it.

Because I don’t trust that she’s actually standing there—

in my world—

looking at me like that.

Then Coach’s voice cuts through again.

“Vega, you done daydreaming or you want to actually play?”

I don’t answer.

Don’t even look at him.

Because I’m already moving.

Straight toward her.

“Yo—where are you going?” Nico calls out.

I don’t stop.

Don’t slow down.

Because none of that matters right now.

Only her.

I stop in front of her.

Still breathing a little heavy.

Still half in my world—

but looking at her like she doesn’t belong anywhere else.

“What are you doing here?” I ask.

She doesn’t hesitate.

“I wanted to see you.”

That—

that hits harder than anything she could’ve said.

Because she didn’t text it.

Didn’t warn me.

She just showed up.

My eyes search her face.

Making sure she’s real.

“You came all the way here… just for that?”

She nods.

“Yeah.”

Something in my chest tightens.

Not in a bad way.

In a way I don’t know how to explain.

“You’re not supposed to be in my world like this,” I mutter.

Her brows pull together slightly.

“Why not?”

I take a step closer.

Close enough that the field doesn’t matter anymore.

“Because now I don’t want you leaving it.”

She goes still.

Just for a second.

Like she felt that.

Like she wasn’t expecting me to say it out loud.

Good.

Because I wasn’t expecting it either.

“So don’t let me,” she says softly.

And just like that—

everything shifts again.

Because she’s not backing away.

She’s stepping in.

“What are you really doing here?” I ask.

Because there’s more.

I can see it.

The way she’s holding herself.

The way she showed up.

She didn’t come just to see me.

She came with something.

“Tonight,” she says.

I wait.

“At your house.”

My head tilts slightly.

“The pool.”

That gets my attention.

“All of us,” she continues. “No one opens anything until we’re together.”

There it is.

The plan.

The reason she’s here.

I glance back toward the field.

Nico’s already watching.

So are the others.

Dylan.

Matteo Russo.

Waiting.

Curious.

Then I look back at her.

And I don’t even think about it.

“Done.”

She exhales slightly.

Like she needed that answer.

Like it mattered that I said yes.

“It’s better that way,” she adds.

“I know.”

Because it is.

Because none of this—

none of what’s coming—

should be done alone.

“Rafe!”

Coach again.

Louder this time.

Annoyed.

“You planning on finishing practice or you quitting mid-drill?”

I don’t look at him.

Don’t care.

But I feel her shift slightly.

“You should go,” she says.

I don’t move.

Not yet.

Because I’m not done.

Because she’s here.

Because she crossed into my world without hesitation—

and I don’t want to let that go just yet.

“You good?” I ask.

Her eyes meet mine.

Steady.

“I am.”

I hold that for a second.

Make sure.

Then nod once.

“Alright.”

I step back.

Slow.

Like I’m choosing to leave—

not being pulled away.

“Don’t be late,” she adds.

A small challenge in her voice.

I huff a quiet laugh.

“I won’t.”

She turns.

Starts walking away.

And for a second—

I just stand there.

Watching her go.

Making sure she’s real.

That she actually showed up.

That she stepped into my world—

and didn’t hesitate.

“Yo, what the hell was that?” Nico calls out when I walk back.

I don’t answer.

Just grab my helmet.

Reset my stance.

Because now—

everything feels different.

Not off.

Not distracted.

Clear.

Locked in.

Because now I know what’s coming.

Tonight.

All of us.

Everything changing at once.

Coach blows the whistle again.

“Let’s go!”

This time—

I don’t miss a step.
