Chapter 111 Chapter 111
Chapter 111 Chapter 111
She was quiet for a moment. Then she turned to the console. “I am not going to stop you. Do as you wish. I have long anticipated this. But I will let you know that once you click this reset button, there is no going back.”
Jax replied.” We are fully aware of that. We don't need a traitor like you telling us anything.”
“I was just a bait.” She said with almost watery eyes.
Do us the honours then.
Her fingers moved across the keys.
The screens flickered.
A progress bar appeared on the main screen.
Ten percent.
Twenty.
Thirty.
Jax watched the screen. His heart was pounding.
Forty percent.
Fifty.
Sixty.
The door behind them opened.
They were guards. Six of them. Black uniforms. Blank eyes.
Kenji moved swiftly and his knife went into the first guard's throat before the man could raise his gun.
Caiman took the second. Jax shot the third. Rina shot the fourth. Kael took the fifth one. All this happened within a blink of an eye.
The sixth guard ran out. Everything happened too fast. Kenji threw his knife. It hit the man in the back of the leg. He fell and caiman finished him.
Jax turned back to the screen.
Seventy percent.
Eighty.
Ninety.
Younger Evelyn's hands were still on the console. Her fingers were shaking.
"Almost…there," she said.
The door opened again.
More guards came in. Six more. Then six more after them.
Kenji fought like a man possessed. His knife was a blur. His face was a mask.
Caiman stood next to him. His rifle cracked. Bodies fell.
Jax shot over their heads and covered the gaps.
Rina fought with a knife she had taken from one of the guards.
Kael stood at the door. He did not let anyone pass.
The progress bar hit one hundred percent.
The screens went white. Then blue. Then normal.
Younger Evelyn stepped back from the console. Her hands dropped to her sides. "It is done."
Jax looked at her. "The reset?"
"Every clone. Every lab. Every facility. They all got it. Every clone in the world is human now."
Kenji grabbed Jax's arm. His hand was wet with blood. "We need to go."
Younger Evelyn was hit with a bullet on her arm.
She dropped to the floor. Jax was almost moved with compassion to help but Kenji pulled him back. “Let's leave now. She will be fine.”
They ran out.
The corridor was chaotic. Guards were everywhere. Gunfire. Screaming.
Kenji led the way. Kael behind him. Caiman behind Kael. Rina behind Caiman. Jax brought up the rear.
They reached the ladder and climbed back down. They dropped into the lower deck.
The hatch was still open and still dark and still wet.
Kenji climbed out and dropped into the water. Kael followed. Caiman followed. Rina followed.
Jax was last.
He looked back. The corridor was flooding. The lights were flickering. Sparks fell from the ceiling.
He climbed out and dropped into the water.
The boat was waiting.
Caiman started the engine. The engine came on and they moved speedily.
Behind them the Odyssey grew smaller.
Jax sat at the front of the boat. His hands were shaking. His arms were heavy. His chest was tight.
Kenji sat next to him. His knife was back in its sheath. “What's wrong? We're you hurt?”
“I am fine.”
"It is done," Kenji said.
"Yes."
"We are human now."
Jax looked at his hands. At the scars. At the knuckles that had been broken and healed so many times.
"How do you feel?"
Kenji was quiet for a minute. Then he said "The same. But different."
Jax nodded.
The boat moved through the dark.
They reached the shore at dawn.
Elena was waiting on the dock. Her arms were crossed. Her face was tired. Her hair was wet from the morning mist.
When she saw them, she quickly walked to them.
"Did it work?" she asked with clenched teeth and raised eyebrows.
Jax climbed out of the boat. His legs were heavy. His arms were sore. His whole body ached.
"Yes." He gave her a tired look.
Yes! Elena looked at him. At his face and into his eyes. "You did it."
He smiled. "We did it."
Maja ran to Jax and wrapped her arms around his legs. Her small hands gripped his pants.
"Father."
Jax picked her up and held her. She was light. Smaller than he remembered.
"We are okay," he said.
She looked at him. Her eyes searched his face. "You are not lying."
"No. I am not."
Kenji walked past them. Leo was behind him holding his hand. The kid looked up at Kenji. Kenji looked down at him. Neither of them said anything. They just walked.
They walked to the church.
The door closed behind them.
The room was quiet.
Elena sat at the table with her mother's papers spread out in front of her. She was arranging them.
"It is over," she said.
Jax sat across from her. "For now."
She looked up at him. "What do you mean?"
"The reset worked. But Helena is still out there. The investors are still out there. Younger Evelyn is still out there, maybe."
Elena nodded. "They are."
"Then, we are not done."
Kenji walked over to them. Leo was asleep in the corner. His small body was curled up on a blanket.
"We rest tonight," Kenji said. "Tomorrow we will find them."
Jax looked at him. "Yea. Together."
"Together."
Jax stood up and walked to the window. The sky was still dark. No stars. No moon. Just black. He pressed his forehead against the cold glass. His breath fogged the surface.
"I don't feel any different," he said.
Jax turned from the window. "Maybe you're not supposed to."
Kenji looked up. "What does that mean?"
"It means the reset didn't change who you are. It just took away the things they put in you. And besides, you are not a clone."
Kenji was quiet for a moment. Then he nodded. "Good."
Elena stacked the last paper. She tied them together with a piece of string. "My mother would have wanted this."
Jax looked at her. "She would have wanted the reset?"
"She would have wanted the fighting to stop." Ele
na looked at the stack of papers in her hands. "She spent her whole life trying to undo what she helped create. This is the closest we'll ever get."
She set the papers on the table.
The room was quiet again.
