Chapter 458 Temperamental

Chapter 458 Temperamental
DAMIEN

"Leave," Damien says to the nurse. She scurries out of the room as soon as he mutters the word.

He's in a terrible mood and he doesn't want anyone around him. He has finally moved from that awful, desolate place and he's home. He made sure that they didn't change any decorations. They lost a lot of antiques and furniture that was in their family for decades, but he's made sure that everything else remained the same. He's sure that he'll recover in no time here, he already feels better. He's not in bed, he's sitting on the sofa beside his bed. He's supposed to be resting, but he's done enough of that.

He can't sleep when he's worried sick about Amelia.

The fact that no one gives him any news is a bad sign as it is. They're hiding something from him, he can feel it. The last time he spoke to her, she told him that she wasn't going to turn back, that she'd go ahead with the plan. He has no idea of what her plan might be, but he knows it won't be anything he'll agree with. He wonders if perhaps he should've been firmer with her, if he should've vehemently stood against her idea. But he was so relieved to hear her voice, he couldn't bring himself to tell her anything else.

He regrets that now.

The fact that she's working with Devon Tyler is making him sick to his stomach. What's worse is that he doesn't know how to tell her that he knows. He doesn't want to, let that encounter stay between the two of them. She doesn't have to know about it. But he is concerned, mainly because that fucker is using her to get what he wants.

Which is Ash dead.

If only she'd pick up the phone. He won't answer her mother's calls, she won't answer anyone's calls. He's tried numerous times. He doesn't know how to go about this, he really doesn't. For the first time in his life, he doesn't know what to do. He's torn between protecting her and trusting her to do the right thing. But Devon's involvement is worrying him. He can't concentrate on anything when he thinks of him close to her, using her to his advantage. It makes him sick.

There's not much he can do, since everyone believes he's dead and he agrees that it's better that way. In a week's time, he'll be able to return to the office and do light work. The only problem is that a week is beginning to feel like an eternity, but it's better than nothing at all. He doesn't believe that she'll be able to do much in a week, which is why he's calm about everything. Once he's up on his feet, Devon won't dare get close to her. He'll be in control of everything again and she'll be away from the mess. This is what he's been telling himself all morning even though a part of him refuses to believe it.

A week could be enough for Devon Tyler.

There's a soft knock on his door and he tries not to be upset because of it. It's the nurse he just kicked out. She clears her throat and keeps her eyes on the floor. "I'm sorry to disturb you, Mr. Keller, but your sister is here to see you."

This catches him completely off guard.

"Theo?" he says, furrowing his brow. She walks in, removing her sunglasses. He can only look at her. He wasn't expecting to see her here anytime soon. What happened to keeping the risks to a minimum? Why does she come to see him but not Amelia?

"Damien," she says, and he can sense that he isn't going to like what she has to say. "We need to have a talk."

"Is it Amelia?" he asks right away, holding his breath.

"It's everything," she says, sitting across him. He listens attentively to everything she has to say, from Ethan's sudden and unexpected release. She tells him that he's alive, that he's on antibiotics. She doesn't know what she'll do about Penelope, though. She can't be trusted anymore and Damien agrees with her. Once he gets back to the office, he'll decide what to do. All he knows is that he won't be working alongside Ethan anymore. It's all over. He'll give him his share and they'll part ways. He doesn't tell Theo, because he knows how she'll react, but there's no space for sentimentality in their world. That could get one of them killed. Where was Ethan's loyalty when he stabbed them in the back? He's relieved that he isn't dead, but that doesn't mean he'll forgive him for this.

She's holding back on something, though, and he senses it immediately. She's fidgety and she keeps staring at his face like she's assessing whether it's safe to tell him or not. He's known her all his life, he can read her like a book. "Theo, tell just tell me what is."

She gulps. "I don't know if I should."
