Chapter 155
ISABELLA’S P.O.V.
I turned to see Lorenzo standing there with a small smile on his face. He had Leo clinging to his waist as he looked down at me. I couldn’t stop the tears that gathered in my eyes. I tried to wipe them away but they just kept falling.
“Xara mia, don’t cry, please,” he whispered but I couldn’t stop myself. I wrapped my arms around his neck and he pressed a soft kiss to my temple while whispering words I was too lazy to interpret. “I’m here, I am fine and I am not going anywhere.”
“What happened? Did they say they were dropping it? How did it go?”
“One question at a time, hm?” he joked. “I just got back and right now, I would like to play a game with my son. We can talk about this later, okay?”
I nodded immediately. He was right. He just got back from a holding cell, he deserved some time to relax before I bombarded him with questions. I just couldn’t believe he was sitting next to me. I thought it was over, I didn’t believe that he would be out without at least going to a hearing.
He played games with Leo until late at night when Leo fell asleep. He tried his hardest to stay awake because he didn’t want to miss a second but the exhaustion prevailed and he was out like a light. I tucked him into bed before following Enzo to the kitchen. We were alone and I knew the others deliberately made themselves scarce so we could have some alone time.
I watched as Enzo moved around the kitchen making hot chocolate for me and a coffee for himself. He pushed the steaming mug towards me after topping it with marshmallows. “Is there anything else you want with that?”
“There are some brownies in the fridge if you don’t mind,” he didn’t say a word, just pulled them out and slid them over to me. I thanked him before clearing my throat. “Are we going to talk about this?”
“After the police report came from the commissioner, there was almost nothing serious to hold me on, it was purely circumstantial. Samson also pushed on Peter’s unprofessionalism during the interrogation and it came out that there was another set of fingerprints on the gun but it was ignored because the prints aren’t in the system.”
“How would someone’s prints be on your gun and what was it even doing there? This was sloppy, even for you.”
He pursed his lips and gestured for me to come with him. I took my food in my hands and followed until we got to his office. He pulled open his drawer and pulled out his gun. “This is mine, at least, this is the one I took with me when I killed Benito. I don’t know what gun that was but it was one I must have lost a while ago.”
“Someone planted it?” I asked and he nodded. “Why would someone want to frame you for murder? It doesn’t make any sense.”
“It does if Benito was already dying,” he deadpanned and my eyes widened. “I heard some of the officers say that according to his autopsy, he had cancer and he was dying. It seemed too easy when I cornered him in that barn. He must have set the whole thing in motion as his final act of revenge.”
The longer I thought about it, the more sense it made. It was insane to me that Benito was able to think that far and sacrifice himself just to spite Enzo and try to put him in jail. He didn’t think this far though.
“Wait a second, if Benito was already dead, then who planted the weapon?” I asked and Enzo went silent. “Someone must have been responsible for it. He must have been working with someone, the question is who.”
“We will find out who it is but until then, just forget about it. I haven’t held you or set my eyes on you in two fucking days. Come here and let me hold you.”
I hesitated because there was an edge to his words and a look in his eyes, something that told me he was a second away from unraveling. I slowly made my way over to him and once I was within reach, he pulled me close to him and kissed me. I melted against him savoring the taste of his lips against mine. He tasted like spearmint toothpaste and he smelled like cheap cigarettes and mold- he smelled like a holding cell.
I couldn’t bring myself to bother about that because he was all that mattered. It was him that I wanted. I wrapped my arms around his neck and deepened the kiss. I wanted to eliminate all barriers between us, I wanted to feel him against me, I wanted to crawl into his skin and live there for the rest of my life.
He nipped my bottom lip and I parted with a small moan. He cursed as his tongue slipped into my mouth. My legs instantly became jelly and I would have crashed to the ground if he didn’t grab me by the hips and place me on top of his table. The coldness of the wood was a sharp contrast to the burning heat of my skin.
“Enzo,” I moaned and he pulled back with a curse. His hands trailed down my sides to the top of my thighs and back. “I missed you but you stink.”
He couldn’t stop himself from laughing. “I suppose that happens when you spend a few days in jail. I could cross it off my bucket list, I suppose.”
“You’re insane.”
“Yet you love me,” he shot back and I shrugged. It was true no matter how much I wanted to deny it in that moment. I smiled and leaned up to peck him softly.
Enzo had no intentions of leaving it as a soft kiss because he immediately grabbed me by the back of the neck and deepened the kiss. Our tongues battled for dominance and I felt his hands trail under my shirt. His fingers traced the top of my breast through the bra and I wanted him to pull it off.
I arched into his hands and I felt him smirk against my lips. His fingers curled around my bra but before he could do anything, there was a loud bang. We pulled apart almost immediately and I instantly noticed the bright light coming from the window.
Enzo and I leaped into motion and pulled the curtains back only to see the trees opposite our house on fire.
