Chapter 40: A Dangerous Proposition
The roar of the helicopter blades was deafening, but the tension on the rooftop was even louder. Crane stood motionless, his hands casually in his pockets, though his guards flanked him, their weapons pointed at Julia and Ethan.
“I must admit,” Crane began, his voice calm yet razor-sharp, “you’ve been a nuisance far longer than I anticipated.” His eyes flicked toward the helicopter. “But running won’t save you.”
Ethan stepped slightly in front of Julia, shielding her. “We don’t need to run,” he shot back. “We have everything we need to bring you down.”
Crane’s smirk widened. “Ah, but do you? You think a few files are enough? My network stretches further than you can imagine. By the time anyone acts on what you’ve found, I’ll have erased every trace.” He took a step forward, his presence commanding. “However, I am... curious. Why not strike a deal instead?”
Julia’s stomach churned. “A deal?” she echoed, keeping her tone steady. “We’re not interested.”
Crane chuckled darkly. “Hear me out. I know what the Bureau is capable of. But let’s be honest—you’re outnumbered, outgunned, and cut off from any support. What if, instead of dying here tonight, you work for me?”
Ethan’s jaw clenched, but he said nothing. Julia’s mind raced. Crane was stalling, but for what? She scanned the rooftop subtly, looking for an opening.
“What makes you think we’d ever agree to that?” she asked, her voice laced with contempt.
Crane tilted his head. “Because you’re smart enough to know when the odds are against you. I’m offering you a chance to live. I could use people like you—clever, resourceful, willing to take risks. And,” he added, his gaze locking onto Julia, “you’d be surprised how persuasive I can be.”
Ethan’s hand twitched toward his weapon. Julia held out a subtle hand to stop him. They couldn’t afford a shootout, not yet.
“What’s your angle?” Julia asked, keeping him talking.
Crane grinned, clearly enjoying the exchange. “Simple. You help me expand my network while keeping law enforcement off my back. In return, I’ll ensure your safety—and make you very, very rich.”
The proposition hung in the air, a poisonous temptation. Julia knew he was baiting them, but his confidence was unsettling.
Ethan finally spoke, his voice low and dangerous. “And if we refuse?”
Crane’s smile faded. “Then I suppose we’ll have to conclude this meeting more... decisively.”
The helicopter hovered closer, its spotlight illuminating the tense standoff. Julia caught sight of Ivan leaning out of the cabin, gesturing urgently for them to board.
Crane noticed the movement and signaled to his guards. “Looks like you’ve made your choice,” he said, almost regretfully.
Julia’s heart raced. “Go!” she shouted to Ethan, sprinting toward the helicopter.
Gunfire erupted as Crane’s guards opened fire. Ethan pulled his weapon, returning shots as he covered Julia’s escape. The sound of bullets ricocheting off metal filled the air. Julia reached the edge of the rooftop, leaping onto the helicopter’s landing skid as it hovered precariously close.
“Ethan!” she screamed, reaching out a hand.
Ethan dove for the skid just as Crane’s men closed in. He grabbed onto it, his weight shifting the helicopter dangerously. Ivan shouted something from the cockpit, but the roar of the blades drowned him out.
As the helicopter ascended, Crane stood at the edge of the rooftop, watching them with a look of calculated calm. He raised a hand, signaling his guards to stop firing.
“This isn’t over,” he called, his voice carrying over the wind.
Julia locked eyes with him as the helicopter rose higher, her resolve hardening. “No,” she muttered to herself. “It’s not.”
Back at their safe house, the tension was palpable. Julia paced the small room, her mind racing as Ivan worked to analyze the new data they’d retrieved during the mission. Ethan sat silently, his expression unreadable.
“He’s escalating,” Julia said finally, breaking the silence. “He wouldn’t offer a deal unless he thought we were a real threat.”
Ethan leaned back, his gaze distant. “Or he’s trying to manipulate us, make us second-guess our next move.”
Ivan cleared his throat, drawing their attention. “He’s not bluffing about his reach. This data shows connections to government officials, military contracts... even intelligence agencies. Crane’s network is bigger than we thought.”
Julia sat down, the weight of the revelation pressing on her. “Then we need to act fast. If we don’t shut him down now, he’ll disappear—and so will any chance of stopping him.”
Ethan glanced at her, his expression softening slightly. “You’re right. But we need a plan that doesn’t get us killed in the process.”
Ivan looked up from his laptop, his face grim. “There’s something else. Crane knows you’ve been collecting evidence. He’s already started spinning a narrative, framing you both as rogue agents working with his rivals.”
Julia’s blood ran cold. “He’s setting us up.”
Ivan nodded. “And it’s working. There are warrants out for your arrest.”
Ethan swore under his breath, slamming his fist on the table. “Great. As if we didn’t have enough problems.”
Julia took a deep breath, steadying herself. “We’ll clear our names, but only after we finish this. Crane’s network is the priority.”
Ivan hesitated. “There’s one more thing. I found an encrypted file in the data you recovered. It mentions something called ‘Project Inferno.’ Whatever it is, it’s big—and it’s happening soon.”
Julia exchanged a glance with Ethan, the unspoken understanding between them clear. They were running out of time.
“What’s the next move?” Ethan asked, his voice steady despite the storm brewing around them.
Julia’s eyes hardened with determination. “We find out what Project Inferno is—and we stop it. No matter what it takes.”
