Chapter 36: Enemies in High Places

The silence between Julia and Ethan hung heavy as they moved through the dimly lit streets. Though they’d narrowly escaped, the attack in the apartment lingered fresh in Julia’s mind. Her boss was involved in the very cartel she’d sworn to dismantle. The betrayal felt like a wound, raw and stinging, the enormity of it pressing down on her.

They took shelter in a rundown hotel a few blocks away. The place was anonymous, with no questions asked as they checked in, weary and wary. They needed rest, but they couldn’t afford to let their guard down—not when the network hunting them was growing wider and more dangerous by the hour.

Once inside the room, Ethan set up his laptop on the bed, securing it with every layer of encryption he could muster. Julia sat beside him, staring at the screen, still shaken. Lisa’s files had been their only link to safety, and now it seemed every part of their world was tainted by Crane’s network.

“We have to go public,” she murmured, her voice barely a whisper. “The deeper we dig, the more dangerous it gets. It’s the only way to shine a light on all of this, to expose what they’re doing.”

Ethan nodded slowly, but she could see the hesitation in his eyes. “It’s a risk, Julia. If we go public without solid proof…we’ll be branded as criminals, just like they want. We’ll lose any advantage we have.”

Julia clenched her jaw, frustration boiling beneath the surface. They were caught in a web of deceit so vast it seemed impossible to escape. She didn’t know who to trust, and even their allies felt like fleeting shadows. But they had to act, and they had to act fast.

“We need to find Lisa’s top contact,” Ethan said, scrolling through the files. “She trusted him more than anyone else. If he’s still out there, he might be our only shot at bringing Crane’s network down.”

They poured over the data, sifting through coded messages and carefully hidden documents. Hours passed, and exhaustion weighed heavily on them, but neither was willing to stop. The truth was buried in these files, waiting to be uncovered.

Finally, they found it. The contact’s name was Ivan Guerrero, a former intelligence officer with a reputation for exposing corruption. He’d been on Crane’s radar for years, but he’d managed to stay hidden. Lisa had trusted him implicitly, and she’d noted in her files that Ivan held information that could take down the cartel at its core.

“This is it,” Julia breathed, her eyes wide with realization. “If we can get to Ivan, we might have a chance.”

Ethan’s hand tightened around hers. “Then we find him. Whatever it takes.”

But as they made plans to reach out to Ivan, a news alert flashed on the screen, catching Julia’s attention. Her stomach dropped as she read the headline: “Federal Agents Julia Monroe and Ethan Black Under Investigation for Links to Organized Crime.”

Julia’s breath caught, and she glanced at Ethan, her mind racing. It was exactly as they’d feared—they were being framed, and now the entire Bureau was out for them.

Ethan’s face was pale as he read over her shoulder. “They’re setting us up,” he whispered, anger simmering in his voice. “We can’t reach out to the Bureau for help—not when we’re being painted as criminals.”

Julia swallowed hard, the weight of their situation pressing down on her. They were alone, hunted by their own agency, and every move they made seemed to tighten the surrounding noose.

“We have to move,” she said, her voice steady despite the fear clawing at her. “We find Ivan, we get his information, and we take this cartel down from the outside.”

Ethan nodded, determination hardening his expression. “They want to paint us as the bad guys? Fine. We’ll be exactly what they fear—the ones who expose them.”

Together, they left the hotel under the cover of darkness, slipping through the back streets as they made their way toward the last known location Ivan had used as a safe house. The city loomed around them, its shadows deep and unforgiving, but they pressed on, united by a common purpose. They were in this together, bound by a shared mission and an unbreakable resolve.

As they disappeared into the night, they knew there was no turning back. They were going to find Ivan, and they were going to bring down Crane’s network—no matter what it cost them.
