Chapter 33: The Escape Plan

**Julia**

The moment stretched, tense and electrified, as we faced the team of men standing between us and the only exit. Ethan’s jaw was set, his hands held high, but I saw the glint of defiance in his eyes. Despite the danger, he wasn’t giving up. And neither was I.

One of the men, taller and more intimidating than the others, stepped forward. His voice was steady but laced with menace. “Hand over the file, and we’ll consider letting you go.”

I met Ethan’s gaze, my mind racing as I gripped the folder in my hands. The documents in here were our ticket to bringing down Crane’s entire network—if we could make it out with them. I couldn’t just hand it over.

Ethan’s eyes flicked to the left, where the windows stretched across the wall. I knew what he was thinking before he even moved. A quick nod was all we needed.

In one swift motion, Ethan dropped to the ground, sweeping the legs of the closest man while I darted toward the windows. Shouts erupted as the team scrambled to control us, but Ethan was already back on his feet, throwing punches as he fended off two of the guards.

The noise was deafening as I shoved a chair into the glass. It shattered on impact, shards raining down, and I could feel the wind whipping through the open space.

“Julia! Go!” Ethan’s voice was barely audible over the commotion.

I didn’t need to be told twice. The ledge was narrow, but adrenaline and determination drove me forward. I stepped onto the frame, gripping the edge as I looked down at the street below. It was dizzyingly far, but I can’t think about that now. I turned to see Ethan backing toward me, his gaze locked on the men slowly advancing, their guns drawn.

“Jump!” I yelled, hoping he could hear me over the chaos.

With a final punch, Ethan broke free, lunging toward the window as the men tried to close in. He grabbed my hand just as I teetered on the edge, his grip firm as he steadied me.

We clambered across the narrow ledge, moving quickly as the men shouted from behind us. My heart pounded as we edged along the side of the building, glancing around for a way down. There was a fire escape a few feet away, but it looked old, rusted, the metal creaking as the wind picked up.

“We don’t have a choice,” Ethan muttered, his jaw set as he eyed the metal structure. “It’s this or get caught.”

I nodded, fear swirling in my chest as I grabbed the railing and swung myself onto the fire escape. It groaned under my weight, but held, and I scrambled down, one step at a time, trying not to look down.

Ethan followed, moving carefully as we descended the side of the building. The guards were still shouting above us, but for now, we had a head start. My hands shook as I clutched the folder, knowing that the evidence inside was our only chance at staying alive.

By the time we reached the bottom, my legs were trembling, my breath coming in short gasps. We ducked into a nearby alley, pressing ourselves against the cold brick as we caught our breath.

Ethan peered around the corner, his eyes scanning the street for any sign of pursuit. “We need to disappear, fast. Crane’s not going to let this go.”

I nodded, my heart still racing as I held onto the folder. “We have what we need. But we’ll never make it out if they keep chasing us.”

A thought struck me then—a risky one, but it was our best shot.

“There’s a storage facility a few blocks from here,” I said, my mind racing as I pieced together a plan. “We can hide out there for a while, go through these files, and figure out our next move.”

Ethan’s eyes softened, a glimmer of admiration in his gaze. “Smart. They’d never think to look there.”

Without another word, we slipped into the shadows, moving quickly as we made our way through the maze of alleys. Every sound, every passing car, felt like a potential threat. But we kept going, the weight of the documents pressing on us like a ticking clock.

The storage facility was nearly empty, the fluorescent lights flickering as we moved down the rows of metal doors. We found an empty unit near the back, a small space that offered little comfort but at least some protection. Ethan closed the door, the clanging sound echoing in the small room as we settled down, finally able to catch our breath.

I opened the folder, my fingers trembling as I flipped through the pages. Offshore accounts, coded emails, connections to corrupt officials—it was all here, everything we needed to bring Crane and his associates down.

“This is it,” I whispered, my voice filled with awe as I looked at the evidence spread before us. “If we can get this to the right people, Crane’s empire will crumble.”

Ethan’s face was a mixture of relief and determination. “Then we need to keep moving. It’s only a matter of time before they find us here.”

But just as we started gathering up the documents, my phone buzzed, the screen lighting up with an unknown number. I exchanged a wary glance with Ethan before answering.

“Julia,” a familiar voice rasped on the other end. It was my boss, a hint of desperation in his tone. “You and Ethan have been marked as fugitives. Crane has twisted everything—he’s made it look like you’re the ones behind the money laundering.”

My blood ran cold as his words sank in. “What? That’s impossible! We have proof that it’s him!”

“He’s got the media on his side, Julia. This goes all the way up. They’re issuing warrants as we speak.”

I looked over at Ethan, horror etched on his face as he pieced together what was happening. We weren’t just targets anymore; we were now officially on the wrong side of the law.

“What do we do?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

“Run. Disappear until you can find a way to expose Crane,” my boss replied, a hint of regret in his voice. “It’s too dangerous to come back. Trust no one.”

The line went dead, and I stared at the phone, my mind reeling. Ethan took my hand, his grip steady even as the weight of our situation settled over us.

“They won’t stop until we’re out of the picture,” he said, his voice calm but laced with anger. “But we’re not giving up.”

I nodded, a surge of determination flaring within me. “If Crane wants a fight, he’s got one. We’ll expose him, even if we have to tear down every barrier he’s put up.”

We packed up the files, a renewed sense of purpose driving us as we stepped out of the storage unit. But as we made our way back through the facility, a low rumble echoed down the hallway, followed by footsteps.

My heart raced as I realized we weren’t alone. Ethan pulled me into a shadowed corner, his eyes scanning the space as the footsteps grew closer. I held my breath, every instinct screaming at me to stay silent as we waited, hoping that whoever was here wouldn’t find us.

But the footsteps stopped just a few feet away, and a voice—cold, familiar—spoke into the darkness.

“Come out, Julia. Ethan. We know you’re here.”

It was one of Crane’s men, his tone dripping with confidence. They had found us, and this time, there was no easy escape.
