Chapter 90 Chapter 89
Evelyn.
Days passed in the kingdom, and something peculiar began to happen between Alpha King Kieran and me. He had surprisingly relieved me of my slave duties, granting me a newfound sense of freedom. While he delved into the responsibilities of his role as the Alpha King, I found myself with time to explore and reflect on the world around me. The solitude allowed our budding connection to flourish.
Kieran, determined to protect his kingdom, threw himself into the task of apprehending the intruders who had attacked during the Moon Goddess festival. Their identities remained unknown, and that frustrated Kieran greatly.
For my part, I waited with bated breath for any news about my sister's death. The questions lingered, and I yearned for answers. The investigation into the tragedy that had cost my sister her life held an underlying current of tension, and I hoped that we would uncover the truth soon. Closure was all I could ask for.
Finally, the fateful day arrived. I was summoned to her Alpha king's study, where I found him seated and staring at the unrolled parchment in front of him, an inscrutable look on his face and a messenger standing beside him, his hands behind his back. Bowing slightly, I announced my presence while I waited for Kieran. He turned to look at me before gesturing for me to come closer, something I promptly did.
"Summon Morticia for me." He said to the messenger, rolling up the parchment and setting it down on the table. I glanced at the parchment, watching as thee messenger made it exit, tension rolling down my body. The atmosphere in the king's study grew tense as we waited for Morticia to arrive.
Finally, a knock came on the door before it pushed open, morticia peeping her head in. When she saw me and the Alpha King seated, her eyes narrowed but she stepped in, closing the door behind her as he walked forward.
"You summoned me, your majesty." She announced cautiously, casting furtive glances at the both of us. I looked back at the king, who had his forehead placed on the back of his palms as we waited for him to speak. Finally, he raised his head up, and I saw his eyes were clouded with unadulterated rage even as he wore an impassive look on his face.
"Morticia, did you have a hand in the late queen's death?" He asked, his voice strangely calm despite the intensity of his question. My heart skipped a beat and I immediately snapped my head to look at Morticia.
Her face blanched and she began to stutter out her reply. "O-of course not! I could never do such a thing!" She snapped back, shaking her head vigorously. The atmosphere grew even worse, with the Alpha King narrowing his eyes.
"I'll ask you again, did you or did you not have a hand in the late Luna Queen's death?" He repeated and my heart began to pound. Morticia still bore the demeanor of defiance and arrogance, even as she insisted that she did no such thing. I stood nearby, anxiety coursing through my veins as I watched him furrow his brow.
Kieran's anger had always been a force to be reckoned with, and now, with such a profound betrayal laid bare, it was bound to be a tempest of unbridled fury. I could only imagine the swirling emotions, the sense of betrayal, and the desire for justice that warred within him.
He stood to his feet, walking towards Morticia as he glared at her, his hands behind her back. He repeated the question once more, his domineering aura having a sinister edge as veins began to show on his neck. "Did you have a hand in the late Luna Queen's death." He growled and I caught his canines coming out, poised to rip her apart, his eyes blazing with an intensity that could sear one's soul.
Morticia opened her mouth to speak but stopped herself short at the look on the Alpha king's face. She quickly turned away, casting her gaze down as her face turned beet red. My heart cracked open as I realized what this meant. Morticia did have a hand in the death of my sister! My mouth fell open and I quickly turned my gaze back to the Alpha King, simultaneously filled with relief and despair. His rage was palpable, an inferno burning within him.
"How could you do such a thing?" He whispered, his voice, cold and unforgiving and I saw morticia go down on her knees, immediately clutching the king's clothes, a desperate look on her face.
"Please! I'm sorry! It wasn't my intentions! I didn't know what went over me!!! I'm so sorry!" She screamed over and again, tears streaming down from her face. Kieran kicked her hands away from her clothes, looking down at her as if she was vermin, nothing but pure dirt. Morticia tried to reach for him again but shrunk her hands back. Alpha king keiran took a step away from her, raising his gaze upwards.
"Guards!" He bellowed out, his voice thunderous. Two guards quickly rushed in, bowing their head immediately. "Take her to the dungeons." He ordered,
Morticia screamed but all her pleading fell on deaf ears as she was dragged out, her voice resounding the in study. The door was slammed shut, leaving just the two of us in the study. Kieran went back to his seat, covering his face with a hand as he picked up the parchment he was reading earlier and stretched it to me. I quickly collected it, rolling it open and reading the contents, my mouth falling open in shock.
"She used an hypnosis potion on my sister? B-but how?" I muttered out loud and caught kieran's face crumbling, a manic chuckle escaping his lips. I snapped my head up to look at him, immediately worried for his state. This must have caused a huge blow. The revelation of her dark deeds was a bittersweet moment, for it offered answers and vindication, but it also deepened the wounds that had yet to heal for both of us.
"You're right, I did kill my mate." I heard him mutter and panic flared in me and I quickly rushed to meet him but he stopped me with a raise of his hands. "Go now, I'd like to be alone." I heard him mutter but I stood frozen.
"No, your majesty! It's not good for you to be alone now..." I tried to dissuade him but he pinned me with a look and I knew there was nothing I could do now. A despondent feeling crashing all over me, I rolled up the parchment, squeezing it in my hands as I hurried out of his chambers, my heart breaking for the both of us. Tears filled my eyes but I was torn what to do. I've always suspected it was morticia but after confirming it, I don't know what else to think. Needing an explanation for this, I immediately marched to the dungeons, going to confront Morticia.
She needed to explain why she did this in the first place.
