Chapter 259
Chapter 259
Elenna's POV
I stood frozen as Solan's eyes locked with Aurelian's across the rooftop.
"You agree to this challenge? You will fight me for Elenna?"
I felt Aurelian's arm tighten around my waist, his body heat intensifying in response to the threat.
"This isn't merely about her, Solan," Millicent announced, her voice sharp in the night air. "This is for the kingdom. For the future of all our people."
"I accept," Aurelian said after a moment's consideration. "With one condition. When you lose, you will surrender all claims to Elenna, forever. You will disappear from her life completely."
Murmurs rippled through the gathered witnesses—soldiers and servants who had assembled to watch this confrontation. I knew what they were thinking. According to ancient tradition, any tribal leader had the right to challenge the ruling monarch for the throne—but few were foolish enough to try.
Only a man with absolute confidence would challenge the Dragon King.
I saw the hesitation flicker across Solan's face, a momentary crack in his determined façade. Doubt seemed to creep into his eyes, and for a second, I thought he might back down.
"What's the matter, Solan?" Millicent's voice turned sharp, cutting through the tense silence. "Are you the leader of the rebellion or not? Will you fight for what you believe in, or will you continue to hide in the shadows?"
Her words seemed to strike something deep within him. I watched as he squared his shoulders and lifted his chin, all traces of doubt vanishing beneath a mask of determination.
"I will fight the tyrannical Dragon King," he declared loudly enough for all to hear. "And I will win."
Millicent's smile was thin and satisfied. She turned to her attendant. "Tell the warriors to lay down their arms. This will be settled in the courtyard, according to ancient law."
Solan nodded to his own soldiers. "Stand down. Let all tribal representatives gather in the courtyard to witness the rise of a new king."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. How had things escalated so quickly? My heart pounded against my ribs as I realized the gravity of what was happening.
"Are you on my side?" Solan asked Millicent.
Her smile was cryptic. "That depends entirely on whether you win, doesn't it?"
I felt Aurelian's arm wrap more securely around my waist. His touch was possessive yet protective, and despite everything, it grounded me. He seemed completely composed as he guided me toward the stairwell, away from Solan's hungry gaze.
The moment we reached a shadowy alcove off the main stairwell, Aurelian pulled me into the darkness. Before I could say a word, his lips crashed down on mine with desperate intensity. Despite being covered in mud and grime from our forest escape, he kissed me like I was the most precious thing in his world.
I forced myself to break the kiss, placing my hands against his chest. "Aurelian, wait." My breath came in short gasps. "We need to talk about what's happening."
His golden eyes blazed in the darkness, but he pulled back slightly. "What is there to discuss?"
"Solan will use any means necessary to win," I warned. "He's not the man I once knew. He's become... something else."
"I know," Aurelian replied, his voice grave. His fingers traced my cheek gently, a stark contrast to the ferocity of his kiss moments ago. "I've seen the change in him."
"He's grown stronger," I continued. "And he wouldn't challenge you unless he thought he could win."
Aurelian's expression darkened. "In a fair fight, he remains no match for me. But you're right—he must have some secret weapon, some advantage he believes will guarantee victory."
"Then don't accept the challenge," I urged. "We can find another way—"
"I've already accepted," Aurelian cut me off. "There's no backing down now. Even if he cheats, I will make that traitor submit."
Fear clawed at my throat. "You don't understand. This isn't about pride or honor for him. He's obsessed. He'll do anything to win."
"Adrian will keep you safe while I fight," Aurelian said, changing the subject. His thumbs brushed away tears I hadn't realized were falling.
"It's not me I'm worried about!" The words burst from me with unexpected force. "It's you! If something happens to you, I don't know what I'll..." My voice broke, and I began to tremble.
Solan might try to poison him. Or use a hidden weapon. Or have someone interfere.
Aurelian's expression softened. He wrapped his arms around me, pulling me against his chest. The steady beat of his heart was somehow both comforting and terrifying—comforting in its strength, terrifying in its potential absence.
"I like that you worry for me," he murmured into my hair. "But I don't like seeing you distressed. Elenna. Look at me."
I clutched at his shirt, looking up into his gentle, affectionate eyes.
"You must trust me to handle this. I've faced far worse than Solan in my time."
"But never with these stakes," I whispered. "Never with... us at stake."
Something in my words seemed to strike him deeply. His eyes widened slightly, then softened with an emotion I couldn't quite name.
"You're right," he said quietly. "Never with so much to lose."
In that moment, looking into his eyes, I realized a truth that had been building within me for weeks. Despite our turbulent beginning, despite all the pain and misunderstandings, Aurelian was my perfect match. My other half. The thought filled me with a strange satisfaction.
Aurelian seemed to sense the shift in me. He cupped my face in his hands, his touch reverent. "I will defeat Solan and return to you, Elenna, my fated mate."
I stared at him, stunned. "What did you say?"
His golden eyes held mine, unwavering and certain. The words "fated mate" echoed in my mind, their significance overwhelming.
