Chapter 79 Not Fair

Chapter 79 Not Fair
Jasmine

Sasha and I go to the kitchen to prepare popcorn and pick some snacks for our movie night. The guys are choosing the film, which might be a mistake—likely a horror. We just arrived at Sasha’s place after a tasty dinner. Sasha shows me where the snacks are while she prepares the popcorn, needing two bags since the guys will probably eat it all.

“Sasha, may I ask you something? You don’t have to answer if you prefer not to," I say as I arrange the snacks into bowls.

She turns to me. “Sure, what is on your mind?”

I hope I am not overstepping, but I am curious. “You and Carter, is that a thing, or are you just friends?”

There is definitely a spark between them. They would be a really cute couple.

Sasha shakes her head, a blush appearing on her cheeks. “No, we are just friends, nothing beyond that. We work together, so it would be too complicated.”

I raise an eyebrow and smirk at her. “But you like him.”

It's not a question but rather an observation.

Sasha blushes more deeply, her gaze dropping to the floor. “Um, I don’t know what you mean.”

Sasha quickly turns away. She couldn’t be any more obvious.

“You should ask him out,” I suggest.

“I can’t do that. I value our friendship and don’t want to jeopardize it if things don’t work out.”

“I understand," I reply, stopping there. I don’t want to make her feel awkward.

Maybe, eventually, they will develop something more naturally. I won’t mention it again unless she does. One thing is certain: they like each other, even if they haven't admitted it yet.

We finish prepping the snack, but before we can head back through, Sasha’s cell rings. She sets the popcorn down, takes it from her pocket, and sighs when she checks who is calling. She shows it to me. I roll my eyes when I see it is Silver calling.

“Are you going to answer it? I can take the snacks through.”

Sasha shakes her head. “I’ll call her tomorrow. I’m not in the mood for any drama.”

She declines the call, leaving her cell in the kitchen, and we go back to the living room. My gaze shifts to the screen, and I scowl at it. "Seriously? The Shining? You know I dislike that film." I complain, placing the bowls on the table.

“Don’t worry, baby girl, I will protect you,” Cody says, a smirk forming on his lips.

I flip him the bird. “I hate you for making me watch this,” I whine.

He laughs loudly and pats the space next to him. “Come on, scaredy-cat, sit here. I’ll keep you safe from the monsters.”

“You are so mean,” I say, but I take the seat next to him.

He chuckles, slipping his arm around me and kissing me softly. “Yet you still love me.”

“For now, but once this movie ends and I have nightmares, I won’t love you anymore by tomorrow morning."

He pulls me close to his side, laughing at me once more. “So dramatic.”

Carter switches off the lights. The only illumination comes from the TV, adding to the creepiness. I honestly think they're deliberately trying to scare us, girls.

“I hate both of you.”

Carter sits at one end of the sofa, with Sasha occupying the space between him and me. It's a snug fit, but comfortable enough. This way, Sasha and I can hide together if needed. I'm a coward with horror movies—I'm curious if she is too. We’ll discover soon.

We didn’t finish watching the whole movie because the guys got tired of our hiding and squealing. They only have themselves to blame for choosing a horror film. We agreed and watched an action movie instead. If we wanted to get them back, we wouldn’t have picked the corniest romance film, but we didn’t.

“You all can stay here tonight if you'd like. The sofa folds out into a bed. I really don’t want to be alone tonight, and even half of that movie was enough to scare me." Sasha laughs as we prepare to leave.

I don’t blame her; I wouldn’t want to be alone either.

“We have an early start tomorrow, but I am sure Carter won’t mind staying with you. Right, Carter?” Cody asks, glancing over at him and trying to suppress a smirk.

Carter smiles and nods confidently. “Yes, I will stay.”

We say goodnight to them before heading home on foot. It's one in the morning and dark outside. I will keep hold of Cody the whole walk and stay alert to my surroundings. We could have taken a cab, but since it's a short walk, it would have been unnecessary and a waste of money.

Linking my arm through his, I stay close. “You lied. We don’t have an early start tomorrow. I suppose you think the same as me—there's something between them that they don’t want to acknowledge or wish to hide."

He chuckles and nods. “Yes, I just wanted to give a small push.”

I knew it! I laugh and shake my head. We make the short walk back, me looking around every two seconds. That damn film is to blame!

“Jasmine, relax. You are fine. It was only a film. I am sorry we put it on.”

“So you should be, because it has freaked me out.”

He kisses the top of my head. “I am sorry, sweetness, but I got you.”

He clings to me tightly as we walk, and I feel more joyful than ever to reach home. I quickly lead us inside, locking the door behind us. The house is quiet and dark, suggesting everyone is either already asleep or out somewhere.

“I am sleeping with a lamp on, and if you don’t like it, tough.” I snicker as we head straight for our bedroom.

Cody grins at me. "Anything you desire, baby girl.”

I honestly believe it will be the only way I can sleep tonight. He can switch it off once I am asleep. If I have nightmares, I am going to kill both Cody and Carter!
