CHAPTER 157: ANYTHING FOR YOU!
CHAPTER 157: ANYTHING FOR YOU!
~MIRA’S POV~
The smell of fried eggs woke me up. I crawled out of bed and finished my business in the bathroom. My core throbbed from all the sex marathon we had last night. It was a miracle Grey was cooking for me. He should also be in bed with me, recovering from the marathon.
My feet carried me to the kitchen after I was done brushing and I hugged my husband from behind. Grey’s body vibrated with laughter. He held me at an arm’s length and kissed my jaw.
“Good morning, baby. You slept well?”
I hummed in reply. I didn’t only sleepwell, I slept better than I had in days. I helped Grey set the table when he was done. We sat side by side.
“I was thinking we could go see your mother today,” he commented with a mouthful of scrambled eggs.
I agreed with him so I nodded. The break away from my mother had given me time to collect my thoughts. I would let my mother know who she was to me, show her some pictures and if that didn’t jog her memory, my plans would still hold. After the trip to Europe, I would return to face my mother.
“How long do you want us to stay in Europe?”
I hadn’t given that much of a thought. Mercy said I could take the time off as long as I reported to her weekly and also sent in a daily report. I could join some of our meetings online. I placed some eggs on my toast and chewed while Grey looked on.
“My mum wouldn’t mind us staying there forever,” he continued with a laugh when I kept mute.
I believed him. He seemed like a mummy’s boy. He stretched his hand to mine and I dropped a tiny piece of my toast on his palm. We laughed.
“What do you think? I’m thinking about a week. Or two, at most.”
My mother-in-law was a formidable woman. I stayed out of the spotlight but the little information I found out about her was enough to scare me. The older Mrs Anderson was from money and married into money. The woman already thought I was a gold-digger. What would she think of me in real life?
“One week is fine by me,” I finally answered.
Grey pouted. Dragging my hand up, he placed a kiss on my knuckles. “Okay, baby. Two. Just two weeks, okay?”
“I love you.”
“I love you too,” I replied.
We finished our meal and I did the dishes as a sign of gratitude for the breakfast. Grey stayed behind to keep me company. I caught him staring at me a few times but ignored it. I finished up and he pinned me between his body and sink to give me a flaming kiss. My hands slipped around his neck, he hoisted me on the counter and I kissed him harder.
“What was that for?” I asked, eyes dark with lust.
Grey touched my lips. “No reason. Just felt like it.”
My eyes searched his face for any hidden signs but there was none. I kissed him again.
“I love you.”
“Love you more, my baby.” He stepped back and carried her into his arms. “I already cleared my schedule for this morning. We can go to the hospital now to see your mum. I’m sure she missed you.”
“I highly doubt that,” I said into his chest.
“Never say never,” he replied.
He kicked the door open and lowered me to the bed. He knelt between my legs and placed his hands on each side of me.
“Wanna bathe together?”
My head fell back a little as I surveyed him. Bathing together could lead to more and I wanted that. I smiled.
“Is that a yes?”
“Yeah.”
Our bath lasted longer than it should have. When we were ready to leave the house, my nervousness had returned. Grey held my hand throughout the drive to the hospital. After parking, he tilted so his upper body was facing me. I tried to meet his gaze.
“Whatever happens, I’m still here,” he murmured.
I wrapped my arms around myself. My body swayed slightly. “What if she doesn’t remember me?”
“Let’s not focus on the negatives, okay?”
No negatives, only positives.
“Okay.”
After a brief hug, we stepped inside the hospital. The antiseptic smell welcomed us. My smile was forced as I greeted the nurses on duty and made my way into my mother’s ward. Greywas by my side, his palm on the small of my back to reassure me of his presence. My steps slowed as I neared the door of mymother’s ward.
One of two things could happen: my mother would or would not recognise me.
I hoped with all my heart that my mother did. And if she didn’t, letting my mother know I was her daughter would do it.
I palmed the bag cradled under my armpit. My baby pictures were there. Pictures of me in diapers, missing tooth, wearing braces. Some of the pictures were with Lisa. Some with my mother.
Grey gave my hand a squeeze. I looked up to his face and he offered me a kind smile. “Take all the time you need.” my eyes fluttered to the door. It was only about two steps away from me. “I’m here for you.”
“I know.” I took his hand and straightened up. My heart drummed in my chest. “Let’s just get over it.”
In a few strides, we were in front of the door. Something was off but I couldn’t pinpoint it. Grey opened the door and I realised what was wrong. My mother was gone.
“Grey… where’s my mum?” I asked without looking away from the empty bed.
The bedsheet was spread like it had never been used. The pillows, cover, everything was intact. I spun to face my husband.
“Grey?”
Grey was faster to react, he stalked out of the ward and I followed behind, jogging to keep up the pace. We stopped at the reception and Grey hit the counter to get the nurses attention. They smiled on recognising him but I didn’t want smiles. I wanted answers.
“I can’t find my mum,” I said before Grey could get out a word.
The nurse’s eyes turned to me. I took a breath and swallowed to keep the tears from falling. Maybe my mother went for a walk or a bathroom break.
“She was here on Tuesday. We left her here but now she’s missing.”
The click-click of the keyboard followed my words. An arm belonging to Grey rested on my shoulder. I leaned into him and waited for the brown-skinned nurse to conclude her search. My arms shook a little and I balled my palms into fists. My mother was fine.
“What’s your mum’s name?” the nurse asked.
“Mrs Mary Evans,” I answered.
“Mary Evans was discharged yesterday.”
My mouth opened but I couldn’t find the right words to speak. The nurse swept her hair out of her face and continued, “Her husband came to pick her up and the doctor deemed her fit to go home. They left together at 2:55 pm.”
“Her husband?” I screamed. My voice attracted a few stares and I dragged in a forced breath. “I’m sorry, her husband?”
“Yes. Mr Kyle Evans. He was here on Tuesday, then he came back on Wednesday for her based on the doctor’s approval. Is there a problem?”
“No,” Grey answered on my behalf.
“None,” Mira agreed. “Thanks for your time.”
I rushed out of the hospital. I heard voices behind me but I didn’t stop till I was by the car. My legs gave way and I tumbled, almost falling to the ground before Grey scooped me up in his arms. I didn’t cry. I just hugged him and let his words soothe me.
He opened the door but didn’t put me down. His thumb swiped across my cheek. “Are you okay?”
“I don’t know how I feel, Grey.”
If my father was the cause of my mother’s injuries, then I had every reason to be afraid. If he wasn’t and someone had attacked them, I still had a reason to be afraid. In both cases, I was frightened.
“Do you want me to make some calls?”
The kindness in my husband’s eyes floored me. I bit my lips. “Can you do that? To at least know she’s okay.”
“I can.” His lips met my nose. “For you, I can do anything.”
But I was barely doing anything for him to compliment his efforts. I stroked his beards and said, “I really love you, Grey and I wish I can do more to show it. You do too much for me.”
“I’m your husband, not a random stranger. No, look at me.” He palmed my face, eyes staring deep into mine.
My heart calmed down. With him, I was home.
“You do enough for me. You show your love for me through your words and actions. You don’t have to do more.”
I pouted. “If you say so. Maybe we should go to Europe today. Why wait until tomorrow when we can go today? Right this minute.”
“Are you sure?”
A kiss on his jaw followed another one on his lips.
I whispered, “As sure as I am about my love for you.”
