Chapter 37: Guardian

We spent a few minutes just staring and saying nothing, our minds were free of any thoughts. This has gotten more and more confusing. The scene might have answered the question of why the monsters were coming here but it mostly raised more questions.

It's clear that monsters are somehow part of this black sticky liquid and they want to corrupt whatever poor creature is in the lake. They are supposed to be stupid bloodthirsty monsters so it's incredible that they are all set on turning whatever creature is in the lake to a monster. Could it be that they are following orders? Is it the person who created them that's ordering the monsters to leave everything and only focus on corrupting what's in the lake.

Also this process, could it be this is how the monsters were created? Were they once normal animals unwillingly turned into the villains of the world? Tsk thinking like this will only make me pity them, even if what I'm thinking is close to the truth I shouldn't be thinking that way. They are now monsters and I cannot show them mercy, there's no helping them. We can only help ourselves.

'So any idea what's going on?'

Vale asked making me snap out of my endless thoughts. Why exactly is he asking me. Before I arrived at his pack I knew nothing about monsters so this is very new to me.

'How am I supposed to know? I should be the one asking you since y'all have had the most experience with these monsters'

'well aren't you supposed to be some magic expert?'

Exactly when did I say I was a magic expert. He must think I have Arina's concerning mindset, it's potions! I only make potions. P.O.T.I.O.N.S!

I'm just as confused as he is, I don't know what we are supposed to do from now on. The creature inside the lake must be powerful to still be alive even now after this place got poisoned so deeply by the monsters. So I asked Vale hoping to learn more about it.

'Do you know anything about the creature in the lake?'

' I think it's one of those forest/lake guardians that are said to be nothing but legends. Some know it through a scary bed time story.

Forest/lake guardians were said to not just appear in any forest or lake. If there's a guardian in that lake then it's guarding treasure, history or the place itself is magical'

Well right now it looks like they aren't just a bed time story after all and with how things are going we just might be doomed. There's no stopping the process because we might die or worse we could also get corrupted.

' It's obvious that we have no power to stop what's happening in the lake or even get near it but we do know that the monsters are going to come here to somehow be one with the lake in order to assist in corrupting the lake guardian. What we can do is wait in case more monsters show up, we'll of course kill them'

The most reasonable explanation seemed to have entered the mind of a stubborn wolf.

'we can't just sit here and wait! We didn't come all the way here to just wait. We have to do something '

No there's something wrong with werewolves. Just like monsters are they all just about fighting, killing and using muscles instead of their brain?

"Okay what do you we do then? If you want to go swim in that thing you can go but leave me out of it!"

I shouted out loud waving my arms around to match my emotions and the reaction of what I did was hilarious. I never thought I'd see a werewolve's mouth hung open in shock. Zik was worse cause I could tell with the glint in his eyes that he wanted to laugh.

' waiting is the best decision because if we try to do something we might cause a strange reaction and if we decided to leave who will be the one to kill the guardian when it emerges from the lake fully corrupted. A creature that big can reach your precious pack in no time so please listen to me when I say we wait!...or you might just regret it'

Thank to saying all that without pausing and with passion I was almost left breathless but it seems to have worked. I saw him turn to face all the werewolves with Roseanne amongst them. Nothing was said out loud but I know he is telling them what I told him. I really miss being on Zik's back because right now I'm wondering if he was this stubborn when Roseanne was riding on him. This is my first time riding him and It's funny how I'm saying it like it was long ago when he allowed Roseanne to ride on him. Anyway the girl better find a way to return to him.

He is very weird because he asks for my opinion and when I give him just that he doesn't listen. I wonder if he also asked these questions to Roseanne or it's just me he likes you bully.

I soon saw three werewolves going back to the entrance of the forest, I nodded admiring what he was doing. Besides his cold and sometimes confusing personality he is not that bad of a leader. I'm guessing they were going to report back when they see monsters. He also sent some werewolves to other corners of the forest.

Since no one was injured there was no need for the distribution of potions.

This was good for me to restore the energy I lost while we wait, if this place had monsters I would've been forced to use an energy potion. Yet just when I have recovered half of my energy something happened in the lake. I didn't know what it meant but with how I shivered and felt a sudden numbing dread I was sure it's not good.

Not that there was anything good that was going to come out of the horror we discovered.
