Chapter 27 - Fractured Realities
The sound of the machines echoed in the room, their rhythmic beeping the only thing grounding me to reality. Edward lay pale and broken in the hospital bed, his body a testament to the horrors he had endured. My hand lingered over his, trembling with a mix of relief and fear. He was alive, yes, but for how long?
Lucian stood by the doorway, his tall frame casting a shadow that swallowed the light. He didn’t belong here—his presence was a storm in this fragile moment of peace. Yet he was here, a constant reminder of the world I had entangled myself in, a world I couldn’t escape.
“You’ve been here long enough,” he said, his voice a low growl.
I turned to face him, my eyes red from sleepless nights and tears. “I’m not leaving him, Lucian. Not now.”
His lips twitched into a sardonic smile. “And what do you think happens next? You sit here, hold his hand, and everything magically fixes itself? The world doesn’t work that way, Seraphina.”
The condescension in his tone made my blood boil. “This isn’t about you,” I snapped.
“Isn’t it?” He stepped closer, his presence overpowering. “Everything about this is because of me. You. Him. All of it.”
I flinched as he reached out, his fingers brushing against my cheek with a gentleness that contrasted the steel in his voice. “Do you think he could’ve saved you? Do you think he could’ve protected you from Isolde?”
“I’m not some object you need to protect,” I hissed, stepping away from his touch. “Edward doesn’t treat me like I’m something to be owned.”
Lucian’s eyes darkened, the faint smirk on his lips twisting into something dangerous. “Owned? No. Cherished? Yes. There’s a difference.”
Before I could respond, Edward stirred, his soft groan cutting through the tension. I rushed to his side, all thoughts of Lucian momentarily forgotten.
“Edward,” I whispered, my hand cradling his as his eyes fluttered open. “I’m here. You’re safe now.”
His gaze was unfocused at first, but then his eyes locked onto mine, filled with pain and relief. “Seraphina…” he rasped, his voice hoarse and weak.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I leaned closer. “I thought I lost you,” I whispered. “I thought…” My voice cracked, the weight of everything too much to bear.
“You didn’t,” he said, his voice faint but firm. “I’m still here.”
His fingers weakly squeezed mine, and for a moment, the world seemed to shrink to just the two of us.
But the moment was shattered by Lucian’s voice.
“How touching,” he said, his tone dripping with disdain.
Edward’s gaze shifted, landing on Lucian. His face twisted with anger despite his obvious pain. “You…”
“Yes,” Lucian said smoothly, his arms crossed over his chest. “You’re welcome, by the way.”
Edward struggled to sit up, wincing with the effort. “I didn’t ask for your help.”
“And yet you’re alive because of it,” Lucian countered, his voice calm and infuriatingly smug.
“Enough!” I snapped, standing between them. “This isn’t about either of you. Stop making it about your egos!”
Lucian’s gaze softened slightly as it shifted to me, but his dark intensity didn’t waver. “This isn’t about ego, Seraphina,” he said, his voice low and deliberate. “It’s about reality. And the reality is, he can’t give you what I can.”
“What I need is to figure this out without you making it worse,” I shot back.
Lucian took a step closer, his presence suffocating. “You don’t understand, do you? You think you have a choice in this? You think you can just walk away from me? From this?”
His words sent a shiver down my spine, a mix of fear and something darker, something I didn’t want to name.
Edward’s voice, weak but defiant, cut through the tension. “She’s not yours to keep, Lucian.”
Lucian’s lips curled into a cruel smile. “And she’s not yours to save.”
“Stop it!” I said, my voice breaking. “Both of you, just stop!”
I turned to Edward, my hands trembling. “You need to rest. Please, don’t do this right now.”
Edward’s gaze softened as it met mine, the anger melting away. “I’m sorry,” he murmured.
But Lucian wasn’t done.
He stepped closer, his hand gripping my wrist with a force that was both firm and possessive. “You don’t see it yet,” he said, his voice low and almost tender. “But you will. You’ll understand that everything I’ve done, everything I am, is for you.”
My heart pounded as I tried to pull away, but his grip tightened. “Lucian…”
“You’re mine, Seraphina,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “You’ve always been mine.”
The air felt thick, the weight of his words suffocating. I wanted to scream, to run, but something about the way he looked at me—the raw intensity, the dark obsession—kept me frozen.
Edward’s voice broke the spell. “Let her go.”
Lucian’s gaze snapped to Edward, and for a moment, I thought he might actually listen. But then his grip loosened, and he stepped back, his expression unreadable.
“You’re lucky she cares about you,” he said, his tone cold. “Otherwise, I’d let you rot where Isolde left you.”
Edward didn’t respond, his gaze never leaving mine.
I felt torn, the weight of their unspoken battle pressing down on me. I wanted to help Edward, to be there for him, but Lucian’s shadow loomed large, his obsession an inescapable force that threatened to consume me.
Lucian's presence lingered even after he walked out of the hospital room. His shadow seemed imprinted on the walls, in my mind, in the space between Edward and me. I sat there, my hand still clutching Edward’s, but my heart thudded in a disjointed rhythm.
“Seraphina,” Edward murmured, his voice a faint echo of its former strength. “Stay with me. Don’t let him pull you under.”
I met his gaze, filled with pain and love, but I couldn’t ignore the tightening in my chest. I hated how Lucian’s words lingered like smoke in the air, wrapping around me in ways I didn’t want to admit.
“I’m here,” I said, forcing a smile for Edward’s sake. “I won’t leave you.”
But as the hours passed, I found myself replaying Lucian’s final words. You’ve always been mine.
\---
The sun had long set by the time I stepped out into the cold night air. The hospital lights cast a faint glow around the entrance, but it did nothing to chase away the chill that settled in my bones.
And there he was.
Lucian leaned against his car, the picture of casual dominance. His suit was pristine, his posture relaxed, but his eyes… they burned with something raw and unrelenting.
“You’ve been waiting here?” I asked, my voice sharper than I intended.
“Of course,” he replied, as if the answer were obvious. “You didn’t think I’d let you leave without me.”
“I can take care of myself,” I said, folding my arms.
His laugh was low, dark. “Can you? Because from where I’m standing, you’ve done nothing but run from danger straight into chaos.”
I bristled at his words, but deep down, I knew he wasn’t entirely wrong. I hated that he could see through my defenses so easily.
“Go home, Lucian,” I said, turning to walk away.
But he was faster. His hand caught my wrist, pulling me back with a force that made my breath hitch.
“Home,” he said, his voice low and deliberate, “is wherever you are. Or have you forgotten that?”
The intensity in his gaze made my stomach twist. “You don’t get to control me,” I said, my voice trembling despite my best efforts.
He stepped closer, his body radiating a heat that felt both comforting and suffocating. “This isn’t about control, Seraphina. This is about what’s real. You can fight it all you want, pretend you don’t feel it, but we both know the truth.”
I shook my head, trying to put distance between us, but he didn’t let go. His grip was firm but not painful, his thumb brushing against my pulse point.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said, but the words felt hollow.
“Yes, you do,” he murmured, his voice like a velvet blade. “You felt it the moment we met. You felt it on our first night when you opened your legs for me and you feel it now.”
My breath caught as he leaned in, his lips brushing against my ear. “Admit it, Seraphina. You like this.”
“I don’t,” I whispered, but the lie tasted bitter.
His other hand came up, cupping my chin and tilting my face toward him. His eyes searched mine, dark and probing. “You can lie to yourself, but you can’t lie to me. I see you.”
The weight of his words settled over me, and for a moment, I hated how much I wanted to fall into him, to let his darkness envelop me.
“This isn’t fair,” I said, my voice barely audible.
“Life isn’t fair,” he replied, his thumb brushing over my cheek. “But this? This is inevitable.”
I closed my eyes, trying to block out the way his touch sent shivers down my spine. “Edward needs me.”
“And I don’t?” His voice was quiet, but the edge in it cut deep.
My eyes snapped open, meeting his intense gaze. “Lucian…”
“I’ve waited long enough,” he said, his tone soft but unyielding. “You keep running to people who can’t protect you, who can’t give you what you need. And for what? To play pretend? To convince yourself you’re still the girl you used to be?”
His words were a dagger to my chest, sharp and cruel, but I couldn’t deny their truth.
“I hate you,” I said, my voice trembling.
“No, you don’t,” he replied, his lips curving into a knowing smile. “You hate how much you want this.”
Before I could respond, he closed the distance between us, his lips capturing mine in a kiss that was equal parts fire and fury. It wasn’t gentle, and it wasn’t meant to be. It was a claiming, a reminder that he wasn’t going to let me go.
I wanted to push him away, to scream at him for taking what he had no right to, but my body betrayed me. My hands clutched his jacket, pulling him closer even as my mind screamed in protest.
When he finally pulled back, his breath warm against my lips, he smirked. “You can fight it all you want, Seraphina. But you’ll always come back to me.”
His words left me breathless, and for a moment, I could only stare at him, torn between anger and something darker.
“This isn’t over,” I said, my voice shaking with a mix of defiance and uncertainty.
“No,” he agreed, stepping back and releasing my wrist. “It’s just beginning.”
As he walked away, I stood there, my heart pounding and my mind spinning. I hated him for his arrogance, for his dominance, but most of all, I hated myself for wanting him despite it all.
Edward’s face flashed in my mind, a reminder of the man who had fought to protect me, who had suffered because of me. But even his memory couldn’t chase away the pull I felt toward Lucian.
I didn’t know who I was anymore, caught between two worlds, two men, and two versions of myself.
