Chapter 23 - The Unraveling
I hadn’t realized how much I was holding onto the hope that something would change. That somehow, the darkness would lift, and I would find Edward safe, alive, in my arms again. But every passing hour, every minute spent without news, gnawed away at that hope.
The days blurred into one another. Lucian was methodical, as always. His mind never wavered from the task at hand, but there was a palpable shift in his demeanor. He was colder, distant, and it only made the silence between us heavier.
I tried to push through, tried to focus on the mission. But every time I closed my eyes, I saw Edward’s face—his eyes full of confusion, pain, fear. The memory of the last time I saw him was burned into my mind, a constant reminder of what was at stake.
I couldn’t let myself crumble, not when I knew that every moment we wasted, every second that passed, brought us farther from him.
The room was dark when Lucian approached me. He stood in the doorway, his silhouette stark against the dim light of the hallway. His gaze flickered to me, his expression unreadable.
“Get ready,” he said, his voice cutting through the silence like a blade. “We leave in an hour.”
I nodded, though my stomach twisted. There was no rest. There was no room for weakness. And yet, despite my resolve, doubt gnawed at me.
Lucian’s plan was simple—surgical. We would infiltrate Isolde’s hideout, extract Edward, and leave with as little trace as possible. But there was a catch, something we hadn’t discussed.
I wasn’t ready for it, not in the way I thought I was. The weight of the situation, the pressure of what we were about to do, was overwhelming. But there was no time for second-guessing. No time to think of what could go wrong. We were too far down this path to turn back.

The sound of tires skimming the road echoed through the car as Lucian drove us to our destination. The air outside was thick with anticipation, each breath I took feeling heavier than the last. The closer we got, the more the fear crept in.
I wasn’t afraid of the violence. Not anymore. The darkness in Lucian’s world had become familiar to me. I wasn’t afraid of losing myself in it.
I was afraid of losing Edward.
The thought of him, helpless and alone, trapped by Isolde’s cruelty—it tore at me, shredded my focus. What if we were too late? What if he was already broken?
“What if she’s done with him?” I asked, unable to keep the tremor out of my voice.
Lucian’s jaw tightened, his hands gripping the steering wheel with unrelenting force. “We won’t let that happen. We’re getting him back.”
His words were firm, but I could see the tension in his eyes. He was just as afraid as I was, though he would never admit it.
The car came to a screeching halt, and for a moment, everything was still. The night was thick with silence, but it was broken by the sound of Lucian’s door slamming open.
“We’re here,” he said, turning to me.
I nodded and followed him, my feet heavy with every step, my heart pounding in my chest. This wasn’t just a rescue mission. It was a race against time. And if we failed, we might never see Edward again.
\---
The hideout was dark, foreboding. Shadows seemed to stretch unnaturally across the walls, and the silence was deafening. I could feel the weight of the air pressing against me, as if the building itself was holding its breath.
Lucian moved with practiced precision, every movement deliberate. He didn’t speak much, but the tension in his body told me everything I needed to know.
I had no idea what awaited us inside. I had no idea if Edward was still alive, if he was being tortured in some way I couldn’t imagine. But I couldn’t focus on that now. I had to trust that Lucian knew what he was doing. He was my guide, my protector in this world of shadows.
The door to the inner sanctum was heavy, metal, locked tight. Lucian didn’t hesitate. With a few swift movements, he was inside, and we were in.
But the moment we stepped into the room, I knew something was wrong.
The air felt colder. The room seemed… empty.
“Edward!” I called out, my voice loud in the silence.
No answer.
I stepped forward, my heart racing. Every instinct told me that something wasn’t right. The walls were lined with equipment, instruments of pain I recognized all too well. And there, in the corner, was a figure slumped against the wall.
It wasn’t Edward.
It was a trap.
I spun around to face Lucian, but before I could speak, the door slammed shut behind us. The sound echoed in the hollow space, trapping us inside.
“Isolde,” Lucian said, his voice laced with cold fury. “She’s been expecting us.”
Before I could process his words, the lights flickered, and a voice filled the air, smooth and taunting.
“Well, well. Look who finally decided to show up.”
Isolde stepped into view, her expression mocking. She was calm, collected, as if everything was under control.
“You’re too late,” she said, her smile cruel and knowing. “Edward is no longer of any use to you.”
My heart dropped into my stomach. The weight of her words was suffocating, and for the briefest moment, I thought I might collapse.
“No,” I whispered, my voice faltering. “No…”
Isolde took a step forward, savoring my fear. “Oh yes. You should have acted sooner. Now, he’s gone.”
Lucian’s fists clenched at his sides, his eyes flashing with dangerous intent. “You’re lying.”
Isolde’s smile widened. “Am I? You think I would leave him alive after all this time? He’s nothing more than a bargaining chip, Seraphina. And now, you’re here, just in time to witness his demise.”
My mind spun, panic clawing at me. I had to think. There had to be a way out of this. There had to be a chance for Edward.
“Where is he?” I demanded, my voice shaking with rage.
Isolde tilted her head, eyes glinting with amusement. “You’ll find out soon enough. If you’re lucky.”
Lucian moved in front of me, his posture protective, as if preparing for the worst. “We won’t leave with
out him.”
Isolde shrugged, almost casually. “Then I suppose you’re both in for quite a ride.”
