Chapter 81 ZEV'S RETURN

Chapter 81 ZEV'S RETURN
CHAPTER 081: ZEV'S RETURN

The twins are six months old when things start to get really weird.

Dorian does not cry like babies. When he is upset things break. This is not a tantrum. The world around him actually breaks.

Sofia is checking him out when it happens for the time. He does not like the stethoscope. His face scrunches up.. Then the medical equipment shatters. All of it. At once. Glass and metal go flying everywhere.

Sofia jumps back. "What was that?" she asks.

"Doom " I say quietly. "He is showing his power."

"He is six months old."

". He is very powerful."

We start baby-proofing in a way after that. We do not just cover the outlets. We have to make the world around him stronger.

Morgana helps us. She makes shadow protections that absorb his energy.

It helps a little.

\---

Seraphina is different. When she is happy things grow. Plants bloom out of season. Grass grows through the floorboards. Flowers appear in places.

Our house becomes a garden whether we like it or not.

"At least it is pretty " Kieran says. He is looking at roses growing out of our bedroom wall.

"It is also a problem for the house " I say.

"Okay that is a point."

We move to a house with stronger foundations.

It helps a little.

\---

The real problem is separating the twins. We try when they are eight months old.

Dorian is in his crib for nap time. Seraphina is in her crib across the hall.

Within five minutes Dorian is screaming. Not crying. Screaming like he is being torn apart.

Things start breaking. Windows shatter. Walls crack.

I rush to him. He will not calm down.

"Where is Seraphina?" Kieran shouts over the noise.

We check her room. She is not crying. She is not moving. She is barely breathing.

"Sofia!" I scream.

She arrives quickly checks Seraphina out.

"She is shutting down. Her heart rate is dropping. It is like she is dying."

"Put them together " Luna says. She appears out of nowhere like she always does when we need her.

We put Seraphina in Dorians crib.

Immediately he stops screaming.

Immediately she starts breathing

They curl together hands

Everything is okay again.

"They cannot be separated " Sofia says. This is not news. "The bond between twins is very strong."

"What if something happens? What if one gets sick?"

"Then the other gets sick too.. Dies.. Goes into shock. They are connected at the soul level. They are one being in two bodies."

"That is not possible."

"Look at them. Tell me it is not true."

I cannot.

Because it is true.

Survival.

Two halves of a whole.

\---

The twins grow fast. By one year they are walking. By eighteen months they are talking.

Full sentences. Complex ideas. Like they are remembering, not learning.

"Mama why is the sky blue?" Seraphina asks one day.

Before I can answer Dorian says "Light scattering. Short wavelengths. Rayleigh effect."

He is two years old.

"How do you know that?" I ask.

He shrugs. "I just do."

"You are remembering " I realize. "Genetic memory. From the pieces of the beings."

"What are pieces?" Seraphina asks.

"Nothing, baby. Just me talking to myself."

It is not nothing.

The echoes are stronger than I thought.

\---

By age four the twins are impossible. Dorian makes shadow puppets that move on their own. He builds things from reality. He sees things that exist in worlds.

Seraphina heals hurt animals with a touch. She makes gardens bloom with laughter. She radiates warmth that makes everyone feel safe.

They balance each other perfectly.

Where Dorian breaks Seraphina fixes.

Where Seraphina grows too wild Dorian contains.

"They are amazing " Oracle Mira says during a visit.

"They are scary " I counter.

"That too."

"What happens when they get older? More powerful?"

"They will change the world. The question is how."

"That is not comforting."

"It is not meant to be. Just honest."

\---

Kindergarten is a disaster. Other kids are afraid of Dorian. He is intense too serious too weird.

They love Seraphina. She is bright and warm. Makes everything better.

Separating them for different activities causes problems.

Dorian locked in a classroom while Seraphina goes to art? Windows shatter.

Seraphina at recess while Dorian stays inside for reading? She starts breathing fast.

The school asks us to keep them

We do.

They sit side by side through everything.

Dorian does Seraphinas math when she struggles. Seraphina helps Dorian with things he does not understand.

Perfect balance.

Perfect codependence.

"Is this healthy?" Kieran asks one night.

"I do not know. Books on child development do not cover forces in human form."

"Okay that is a point."

\---

Age seven brings the dreams. Both twins wake up screaming the night.

We rush to their room. They are sitting up in bed holding hands, eyes glowing.

"We saw them " Dorian says.

"Saw who?"

"The ones we carry." Seraphinas voice is weird. It has layers.

"The pieces of the beings?"

They nod together.

"They wanted us to tell you something " Dorian continues.

"What?"

"They are proud of you. They love you. They are watching from the stars."

I am crying before they finish.

"Did they say anything "

"Keep us together " Seraphina says. "Never separate us."

"We will not."

"Promise?"

"I promise."

Their eyes stop glowing. They settle back into bed still holding hands.

I sit between them until they fall asleep.

Kieran finds me there an hour later.

"They spoke to them " I whisper. "The pieces of the beings. They are still connected somehow."

"Through the echoes?"

"I guess. The genetic memory is stronger than we thought."

"Is that good or bad?"

"I do not know anymore."

We sit with our children and wonder what we have created.

\---

Age ten they start understanding what they are.

"We are not normal " Dorian says one afternoon.

We are in the garden. He is making shadow sculptures while Seraphina grows flowers to twine through them.

"What makes you say that?" I ask carefully.

"Other kids do not break reality when they are upset. Their sisters do not make plants bloom by smiling."

"You are special."

"We are dangerous." He looks at me with eyes that're too old for his face. "I can feel it. The power inside. It wants out."

"Can you control it?"

"For now.. It is getting stronger."

Seraphina joins us dirt on her hands from planting. "I feel it too. Like there is something inside me trying to break free."

"The echoes " I say. "You carry pieces of powerful beings. As you grow those pieces grow too."

"What were they?" Dorian asks. "The ones we carry?"

I tell them.

About Alaric, Cassian, Zev and the wolf. About the pieces and the sacrifice. About how pieces of them live on in Dorian and Seraphina.

They listen quietly.

When I finish Seraphina asks "Did you love them?"

"Very much."

"Do you love us?"

"More than anything."

"Even though we are weird?"

"Especially because you are weird."

Dorian smiles. It is small but real. "Good. Because we are only going to get weirder."

He is not wrong.

\---

Age twelve they start finding others.

"There are like us " Seraphina announces one day.

" What?"

"Children born from echoes. Fragment children. We can feel them."

"Where?"

Dorian pulls out a map he has been marking. "Thirteen far. All over the world. Some are older. Some are younger. All carrying pieces of sacrificed souls."

"How do you know?"

"We dream of them. They dream of us. We are all connected."

"What do they want?"

"Help. Understanding. To know they are not alone."

". You want to help them?"

They look at each other. Some silent twin communication.

Together: "It is what we are meant to do."

"You are twelve."

"We are Doom and Survival helping others find balance. Age does not matter."

I look at Kieran. He shrugs.

"I guess we are running a support group for children now " I say.

The twins beam.

\---

By thirteen they are traveling. With supervision. Luna or Kieran or Morgana goes with them.

They find children and help them understand their power. Control it. Accept it.

"You are, like social workers " Sofia observes.

Someone has to do it Dorian says in a tone.

He is right.

The fragment children are appearing often.

They love creating forms.

Echoes are multiplying.

The sacrifices from the war are still affecting people today.

My children are at the center of all this.

It is about doom and survival.

They are helping others find their balance.

Just like they found theirs.

\---

My children are fifteen years old when they ask about their father.

We are having dinner, a normal family moment.

Then Dorian says, "Kieran is not our father is he?"

Kieran freezes, his fork in mid-air.

I set down my fork carefully. Ask, "What makes you say that?"

Dorian says, "We have echoes of four people inside us. You only loved one person after they were gone. If we were Kierans children we would only have his echoes."

Seraphina adds, "But we are not Kierans children we can feel it. The fragments genetics are stronger than his."

I tell them "You are half me and half fragment echo. Kieran is your father in every way that matters. Biologically you are born from the fragments genetic memory."

Dorian says, "So we are children of ghosts."

I say, "You are children of love that transcended death."

Seraphina says, "That is poetic but weird."

I agree, "Yes it is very weird."

Kieran speaks for the time "I have raised you since birth fed you taught you and loved you. That makes me your father and biology does not change that."

The twins look at each other then get up and hug Kieran.

Seraphina says, "We know, Dad we have always known."

The crisis is averted and our family is intact.

\---

Now my children are seventeen years old.

They are juniors at Duskmoor Academy.

Dorian studies magic and entropy and Seraphina studies healing and life magic.

They are brilliant, strange and powerful.

And they are still completely codependent they cannot be apart for than a few hours without both suffering.

I ask Oracle Mira during one of her visits "Is that ever going to change?"

She says, "No they are two halves of one whole separation would destroy them both."

I ask, "What about relationships, college and adult life?"

She says, "They will navigate it together anyone who loves one has to accept both."

I say, "That is complicated."

She says, "Most worthwhile things are."

She is not wrong.

\---

I watch my children now in the courtyard.

Dorian is creating shadow sculptures. Seraphina is weaving flowers through them.

They are, in balance, perfect partnership.

They were born from echoes of loves I lost.

They carry pieces of Alarics intensity Cassians warmth, Zevs wisdom and the wolfs protection.

My impossible children.

I touch my chest where the fragments used to live it is still empty still hollow.

But when I look at Dorian and Seraphina I feel them they are not gone, just transformed.

Love is continuing through forms and maybe that is enough.
