Chapter 290 CHAPTER 290
Chapter 290 CHAPTER 290
My dragon whined in pain as I turned him around.
"Where are you going?" Florian demanded, "We need to go with her. What if Eruwan needs our connection?"
"Go on, I'll be right behind you. I need to get something for her when she wakes up."
"Be fast about it, we won't wait for you."
I didn't react to Draco's bossy tone, he was the most affected of all because somehow he'd seen his own death and made peace with it yet this whole thing happened.
Alira lying in his arms like that hadn't fully made it into my subconscious.
She has been out cold so many times I just.. feel cold.
So I have to do this now that my head is a bit clearer.
I knew those things running around the battlefield, shooting our people didn't come from the Fae lands.
Someone followed us from Earth and he chose the wrong side.
I pushed Athrakis around the battlefield, searching for the bastard.
His scarred face had haunted my dreams for a while and I know she suffered from him too.
His blonde, scanty head popped out to me as I flew over one of the houses Alira didn't blow to pieces.
The window was open and I could see a full computer system spread across everywhere for him.
My dragon landed on top of the building and I climbed down, my fighting sword in my hand.
My dragon landed on top of the building and I climbed down, my fighting sword in my hand.
The place was a mess of wires and screens. Baldwin was sitting in front of one of them, typing like he wasn’t in the middle of a war.
Maybe he thought this was Earth where he could do his little experiments with no consequences.
I kicked the door open.
He turned around fast, eyes widening when he saw me. The scars on the side of his face pulled tight when his expression changed.
“You!" He sneered, "I should have killed you when I had the chance!"
"Yeah, you should have but you're an incompetent fool," I hissed as I swung my sword and cut through the main power line running across the floor.
Sparks flew everywhere and every screen in the room went black at once.
Baldwin’s face twisted.
“You have no idea what you just did,” he snapped.
“I know exactly what I did,” I said, stepping closer. “I cut off your little toys. This isn’t Earth, Baldwin. You don’t get to play god here with your machines and your needles. Here, I can make the ground under your feet open up and swallow you whole before you even finish a sentence. I can burn your neck until it matches the scars on your face. And nobody’s going to stop me.”
He took a step back, but he still tried to look calm. “You think you’re the first person to threaten me? I've beaten your bitch at every game she's played but this is the best one yet and I plan to win big! She's dead, though, isn't she?"
I laughed, but there was no humour in it.
“You wish, she's not dying anytime soon. And you're actually dumber than I thought. You got the book, read its contents and still chose to side with the enemy. You will beg for death."
"Not if I kill you first!"
A Fae soldier burst through the side door, blade raised. Before he could even reach me, Athrakis slammed one heavy claw through the roof and dragged the man out. I heard the wet crunch as my dragon’s teeth closed around him. The screaming didn’t last long.
Baldwin’s face finally lost some of its colour.
I moved fast. I was on him before he could reach for whatever weapon he had hidden. My fist connected with his jaw, then his stomach. He tried to fight back but he was weak — all brain, no real fight in him. I beat the shit out of him until he dropped to his knees, coughing blood.
Then I grabbed one of the thick wires from his destroyed setup and used it to tie his hands behind his back, then his ankles. I made sure it was tight. When I was done, I stepped back and looked at my work.
He looked like a badly wrapped Christmas present.
I grabbed him by the back of his shirt and dragged him toward the door.
“You’re coming with me,” I told him. “There’s someone who’s been waiting a long time to see you again.”
He started struggling, but it was pathetic.
“You can’t take me to her,” he spat, blood dripping from his mouth. “She’ll kill me.”
I leaned down close to his ear.
“That’s the idea.”
I hauled him outside and whistled for Athrakis. My dragon landed and lowered his head, golden eyes watching Baldwin like he was already deciding which part of him tasted better.
I threw Baldwin over Athrakis’s back like a sack of grain and climbed on.
As we lifted into the air, I looked down at the burning remains of the Fae base and felt nothing but cold satisfaction.
The King was rounding everyone of them up, strapping them to carriages that had arrived when I went to get this screaming bastard in front of me.
I pushed my dragon to fly faster, we need to be there for Alira when they start healing her.
We arrived and I got down from Athrakis, panic in my throat.
Being here now was making it all real and I was scared.
"Buddy, keep your eye on him, I'll send someone to come take him to the dungeons," I said to my dragon as I ran inside.
She was in the inner pool, but somehow, her body was floating.
"What's happening?" I asked as I took off my shoes.
"The water is rejecting her," Hazel answered, her eyes misty.
"What took you so long? Where's the gift you were so set on?"
"Calm down Florian, he's not the reason we're in this situation. Be angry at me instead. I'm the bastard she tried to die for."
I rolled my eyes, "You are always trying to carry everything on your shoulders. There are three of us. Learn to let go Draco."
He sagged against my body, and I wrapped an arm around his shoulder.
"What if.. what if she doesn't wake up?"
"Alright," Eruwan clapped, shooing us out, "enough of this gloominess in my healing chamber!"
"But –"
"Nope! If I need you, I'll be sure to call you."
"I just want to know what's next since the water isn't working. What are you doing to bring her back?" I insisted.
"I'm trying out something, alright? I can't explain it but it should work. It has to," she said to herself as she continued grinding the herbs on a flat stone.
"Alright then. We'll be out here."
We filed out, the three of us in our thoughts, fighting tears we shouldn't shed.
