Chapter 91 - Groundbreaking
Billy Hotel, Chicago.
The sun peered through the glass window on the fifth floor of Scott and Evelyn’s hotel room.
Their heart was restless with no idea where their daughter would be. Every attempt Evelyn made to reach out to her daughter wasn’t successful. Each time she tried a new locator spell, she got zapped away.
She was not giving up.
“I am doing the spell again,” she said.
She had not slept and neither had Scott. They have been awake all night.
“No,” Scott disputed. “We have seen what it does to you.”
“I don’t care,” she said as a sob escaped her lips. “We can’t leave our daughter out there to pay for our mistakes. We are no friends with Dan and you know what he would do to her without thinking twice.”
“I know.” Scott sighed. “But the spell isn’t working. Something in blocking it.”
“It’s not something, Scott,” she said. Her face turned pale as she continued. “It’s someone.”
“What are you talking about?” Scott stared with a wide eye. He looked confused. Their daughter was not told how to unlock her powers.
“I think Mary is the one blocking me from finding her.”
Scott thought for a moment and then opened his mouth to dispute what Evelyn had said. “That’s not possible. She didn’t even know.”
“I still need to try the spell.” She dragged herself to her feet and proceeded to the table sitting at the corner of the room.
A soft knock on the door got her puzzled for a while. She turned swiftly, focusing her gaze on the door while Scott went to answer the door.
He opened the door and made a profile of his brother-in-law, Matt. He’s all grown with a neat beard that dignified his round face. His short brown hair is well-kept.
He broke into a soft smile, seeing Scott. He couldn’t help but throw his arms around him for a hug.
It’s been long since they saw each other. That was on Matt’s wedding day, 15 years ago.
“Hello, big sis,” Matt said. He made his way toward Evelyn and hugged her tightly. “I am sorry about my niece. I am here to help you find her.”
Evelyn breaks down in tears. “I can’t even use my powers to find her.” Her words were hard to perceive. She sobbed and talked at the same time.
“Don’t worry, big sis,” Matt consoled her. “We can channel our powers together to find her.”
Evelyn was relieved for a while. She has faith in her younger brother, Matt, and knows with their powers channeled, they could do that which is impossible.
Scott’s phone buzzed. He peered at it from the bedside. “It’s Mia,” he said. Without delay, he moved faster than the eye could see and picked up his phone.
“Hello, Nick!” Mia said on the other end of the call. She sighed softly and continued. “Dave and I couldn’t find her. We have exhausted all the spells we know.”
Mia and Dave are going through the same difficulties as Evelyn. When they try scrying over a map to find Mary’s location, the map went up in flames. Pushing further with some other locator spell gets their asses zapped across the room.
“I understand,” Scott said. His tone was faint and sad. “Thanks for trying.”
“Please, if there’s anything else Dave and I could do, do let us know.”
“I sure, will.” Scott hung the call and focused his gaze on Evelyn. “Our friends are experiencing the same difficulties.”
“It’s not over, big sis,” Matt said to Evelyn. “Let’s channel our powers to find my beautiful, Niece. Shall we?”

Dan's mansion.
Mary was still asleep, rolling on the bed like she is restless. As she rolled, she blabbered words. This continued to happen for quite a long time.
“No!” she yelled, sitting up.
She had finally snapped out of her nightmare. She glanced around with fear in her eyes, panting heavily like one who just completed a marathon race.
“It’s just a nightmare,” she said, trying to catch her breath.
Suddenly, she felt a strange presence around her. The room and her bed began to spin but in the normal, it wasn’t. Her eyes are just playing Scotts with her.
“What’s happening!” she cried out.
Dan moved with a whoosh, kicking open the door of Mary’s room. Her scream terrified him. He sensed something wrong and moved faster than the eye could see to help her.
“Are you all right?” he asked, standing by the bedside. Everything seems fine with him. But in the eyes of Mary, the room and her bed continued to spin vigorously. He approached closer and sat on the bed. “Mary… Mary…”
The more he called her name, the more distant it grew in Mary’s ears like he was yelling to her from afar. She held the bed firmly in other not to fall from the vigorous spinning she perceived.
“What’s going on?” she screamed. “Make it stop!”
Dan threw his arms around her and cuddled her. He hid her from what he believed to be an illusion. “It’s gonna be all right,” he whispered.
“Something is not right,” she whispered back. Her voice cracked as she attempted to speak further.
“Of course, something is not right,” a whisper came closer to her ears. It wasn’t Dan’s It was her grams and it sounded harsh.
A wild scream escaped Mary’s lips. Like a banshee, her scream blasted Dan away with a sonic wave, sending him across the room. Another wild scream escaped her lips. This time, it cracked open the ceiling.
Thick dark smoke oozed out from the ceiling and shrouded the entire room in darkness.
