Chapter 103- Who’s Safe?
Dan couldn’t get hold of Mary. The reception was terrible that he chose to drive down to University of Chicago himself. He was worried and scared of losing her.
He walked out from his black jeep and paid attention for any sound of heartbeat. He had come to a dead end that looks so calm like a grave yard except for the thunder that continued to roar.
The underground parking lot isn’t where he should be looking. He walked back into his black jeep and drove out.
He just remembered that Mary told him she was heading for a coffee before coming home.
As he started driving toward the coffee shop, he continued to dial Mary’s number. Just like before, the poor reception continued to frustrate him. He gnawed and slammed his cell phone down on the dashboard.
He finally came to a stop in front of the coffee shop. Before he could get out from the car, his phone buzzed loudly.
He didn’t wait a second before picking it up, thinking it was Mary. However, his expectations were cut short.
“Hello, Dan, it’s me,” Samuel said on the other end of the line.
Dan hissed. “What?” the look on his face tells it all. Samuel isn’t the one he is expecting to hear from.
“There’s a problem,” he said.
“Then fix it!” he angrily pulled out the phone from his ear.
Just before he could dial the ‘end call’ button, Samuel continued. “The Clandestine wolves are terminating the wolves that belong to the bloodline!”
This got Dan’s attention. He pulled his cell phone back to his ear. “What?” a confused look crossed his face. “When?”
“I just got to my cabin in the woods and saw a dozen of my pack dead,” Samuel said in a tiny voice. He sounded as if he was sobbing. “On the door of my cabin was a note signed with the seal of the clandestine wolves.”
Dan’s lips tightened as his jaw clenched. “What do they want?”
“We know what they want, Dan,” Samuel said. “We know they have always opposed us for wanting to break the curse of the moon.”
A thought crept into Dan. “Hold on, slow down,” he said. His voice this time sounded incoherent as fear crossed his face. “That means Mary isn’t saving. Oh no!” he quickly ended the call and slammed it on his dashboard as he hastily opened the door.
It’s still raining heavily and he never cared about getting drenched in rain. What matters at the moment is finding Mary and making sure she’s safe. He ran toward the coffee shop. It’s already past 10 Pm but his hopes are still high that she could be still there, waiting for him.
He imagined what the clandestine wolves could do to Mary if they found her. He didn’t want such fate to fall on the girl he loves.
The clandestine wolves are werewolf organization formed by desperate alphas that refused to identify themselves as being part of the werewolf bloodlines. They know the werewolves bloodlines will one day swim in corruption and desires that are not in line with the werewolf tradition. They see themselves as werewolf justice league who are sworn to maintain order, especially when werewolves start hurting and hunting the humans like the vampires.
Dan pushed open the glass door and stepped in, sniffing in the air. His face flushed with excitement on perceiving Mary’s scent.
“Mary, my love!” he yelled desperately.
There’s no one in the coffee shop. No customers or attendants. But when he continued to yell, the manager walked out from his voice.
“Yes, can I help you?” he asked.
Dan paused for a while and paid attention to his immediate surrounding with his enhanced hearing ability for any sign of another heartbeat besides the manager’s.
His face consorted with rage when he realized the only heartbeat he could here was the manager’s. He moved toward him with his shoulders raised. “Where is she?!”
“Where is who?” the manager stared with confusion. He has no idea who Dan was talking about.
Dan gripped him by his shirt and yelled right at his face. “Where is Mary!”
He’s certain he can still perceive her scent but confused him is the inability to pick up another heartbeat besides the manager’s “I am choking,” the manager gasped. “Could you please let go of me?” he barely squeezes out. Dan’s grip was firm on him and almost choking him to death.
He released his grip on him and pushed him away to the floor.
As he walked right through the manager’s office, the manager yelled at him, “You can’t go in there!”
Dan ignored him anyway and proceeds. That’s were Mary’s scent was coming from.
The manager sprang back to his feet and ran after Dan. He pulled his arm from behind and asked him to leave or he calls the cops.
Dan growled and pushed him away. He focuses his gaze on the manager’s office and scans around while sniffing into the air.
Not long, his eyes were drawn to Mary’s backpack sitting beside the wall of the office.
A violent feeling that would be hard to control came upon Dan as he turned his gaze toward the manager and at the same time pointing at Mary’s backpack. “The owner of this backpack, where is she?”
“Home I guess,” he said. “She gave me her backpack to keep because of rain. So, leave or I call the cops on you!”
“Wrong answer!” Dan furrows his brows.
He moved faster than the eye could see toward the manager and sank his fangs into his chest, aiming for the aorta, which carries the blood out of the heart and is the largest blood vessel of all, up to 1inch in diameter.
When he’s done draining the manager of his blood, he shoved him away and wiped his mouth clean from blood stain. He proceeded toward Mary’s backpack and picked it up. “Where are you my love?”
