FALLEN PIECE OF FABRIC

FALLEN PIECE OF FABRIC

“Why are the both of you looking at each other like that? You seemed pretty happy the last time you were together.” Viviana teased when Rosalia placed her hands on her hips in a defensive and annoyed stance.
She thinks I’m annoyed. I’m not.
I am thoroughly amused, amused by this woman Rosalia. Although I wished she would have remembered me herself and we didn’t have to officially meet this way, but not all things can be planned or controlled.
“What do you mean by again Viviana?” She asked her eyes still not leaving me, fire in them. “I know I told you a weird man was running after me in the airport but it wasn’t like I took a picture to show you. So how is it that you know?”
Viviana chuckled. “He is still the same person? I had no idea. I only know him because he was the one you were squatting down with the last time we had a club visit. He was the last one you were with before I hauled you home.
The person you were calling your Ken” she emphasized.
“He is?” Rosalia asked with surprise, her eyes widening impressively.
“I am” I replied, forcefully shoving my hands into my pockets like I was irritated by this encounter. One I knew was bound to happen when I decided to come here.
On hearing of the near-death experience our boss was made to face, I and a handful of our Mafia family chose to come immediately.
Although Don Dante had told us not to come and had only requested for another synthetic mask that looked like the dead Massimo, there was no way we could just stay away.
“I came here to see Massimo, so let’s this discussion end and let’s go about our daily lives.” I said roughly and turned from them, back into the room.
I heard Rosalia scoff as she wheeled Viviana in. “Who does he think he is? Just because I called him Ken, doesn’t mean he’s worthy of being a Ken, definitely not my Ken.”
I turned and narrowed my eyes at her. She clamped her lips but puckered her lips like a child. Then when I turned there was a smile on my own lips.
The men around Don Dante’s bed parted like the Red Sea as Viviana and Rosalia moved through. Rosalia and Viviana gave subtle nods cautiously at the men before focusing their attention on Don Dante who now looks like Massimo Tomasso.
Gradually the men began to leave the room until I was the only one wearing a black shirt and a pair of black trousers.

Viviana’s eyes rove around his face and tilted to the side to take a better look at him. The creases on her forehead blared the indication that she was looking for something. I wonder what it could be because the mask Don Dante is on is perfectly similar to the one that got destroyed by the fire. It’s a good thing he had been able to wear a mask after the chaos or is cover would have been blown through the roof.
“You should be resting Viviana” Don Dante said in that gravel-ly voice of his.
“And you should not have thrown yourself at me like that. That was dangerous and… and foolish.” Viviana stuttered.
“You’re angry at me for putting myself before you? For saving your life?”
Rosalia leaned in and used a hand to cover Viviana’s lips. “What Viviana means is she’s grateful that you saved her. But she doesn’t expect you to do something so dangerous for her.
My best friend is not used to such and so she is just surprised, thankful, grateful and perhaps overwhelmed.”
The eyes of everyone went to Viviana as Rosalia retracted her hand and indeed, it seemed there was moisture she was holding up with all of her will power, right in the rims of both eyes.
“There is no need to thank me or leave your bed for that. I’ll do it again… and again, if a situation calls.” He said, holding her gaze.
Who would believe that the bad and big Don of one of the most feared organizations in the world, could have such cheesy words to say?
This is news worthy and the air in the room seemed to make it seem like my presence was interrupting a very important thing. Rosalia also thought so because she lowered herself, dropped a kiss on Viviana’s cheek and walked out of the room.
I followed after and closed the door behind me.
“Is this you trailing after me again?” Rosalia asked, turning to face me.
“You’re funny. Have you thought of being a comedian? I believe you could be one of the best there is.”
“So why were you calling after me and running after me?” She asked. I stepped closer to her and pulled a piece of fabric from my pocket. As the lady green fabric filled her vision, I think colour also ran off from her cheeks and the bravado she had been putting up went cold.
“While you were in a rush to get to your friend, I believe you remember when the contents of your bag scattered in your haste.
Among them, this was.
You must have heard those behind you laughing as you were running toward the taxi. You must have thought they were sharing a joke… when in reality they were laughing because your lacy string of lady covering fabrics fell through.”
