Chapter 242: Venomous Gaze
Chapter 242: Venomous Gaze
George felt a little down.
But he didn't let it get to him.
Take it slow. One day, she'd come around again.
Charlotte stood on the other side, looking out the window.
Her heart was beating faster than usual, for no reason she could explain.
She hadn't meant to pull away just now.
It was just a reflex.
Charlotte sighed quietly to herself.
She didn't really know what she was feeling anymore.
After getting off the Ferris wheel, the three of them went to try other rides.
After a while, Charlotte suddenly frowned.
She stopped walking and looked back.
Behind her, tourists were moving in every direction. Parents with kids, couples holding hands, groups of young people.
Nothing seemed out of place.
But she couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching them.
It was deeply unsettling.
A cold, creeping feeling, like something was crawling up her spine.
George noticed something was off and stopped.
"What's wrong?"
Charlotte thought for a moment, then shook her head.
"Nothing."
"I probably just imagined it."
George looked at her, his brow furrowing.
"Is someone watching us?"
Charlotte was caught off guard. She hadn't expected him to ask that.
She hesitated, then nodded.
"Yeah."
"I kept feeling like someone was staring at us."
"But when I looked back, I couldn't see anything."
George's expression turned serious.
He scanned the area around them nervously.
But all he could see were tourists coming and going. Nothing stood out.
"Could you have been mistaken?" George asked without thinking.
Then he shook his head.
"No, that's not right."
"I trust your instincts."
His voice was firm.
He knew Charlotte. She wasn't the type to imagine things.
If she said something was there, then something was there.
Charlotte looked at him, a little surprised.
She'd half expected him to think she was being oversensitive.
She hadn't expected him to trust her like this.
George pulled out his phone and called David.
It picked up after two rings.
"Mr. Summers?"
"David, I need you to look into something," George said, his voice low and steady. "Check if anyone suspicious has been following me and Charlotte lately."
"Of course, Mr. Summers," David said quickly. "I'll get on it right away."
"As soon as you can." George hung up.
He put his phone away and looked at Charlotte.
"Don't worry. I've got David on it."
"It's probably nothing serious."
"I'm here."
Charlotte nodded but didn't say anything.
A quiet unease settled over her.
That feeling of being watched was so uncomfortable.
Like a snake had its eyes locked on her.
Meanwhile.
In a corner of the amusement park.
Someone in a bulky mascot costume was hiding behind a pillar.
It was a pink bear suit, cute and cuddly-looking.
But the eyes visible beneath the costume head were cold and filled with malice.
She watched the direction Charlotte and the others had walked off in, her gaze full of hatred.
Had Charlotte spotted her just now?
The woman bit her lip and pulled out her phone, dialing a number.
It rang several times before someone picked up.
A man's impatient voice came through.
"What now?"
"Didn't I tell you not to call me out of nowhere?"
The woman bit her lip, her voice slightly unsteady. "I think they noticed me."
"What?" The voice on the other end went cold.
"Charlotte kept looking back," the woman said. "I think she sensed someone was watching her."
"I'm scared if I stay any longer, she'll recognize me."
There was a brief silence on the other end.
Then came a sharp curse.
"Useless!"
"You can't even handle something this simple!"
The woman flinched, tears threatening to spill.
"I didn't mean for this to happen."
"I was being careful."
"Enough talking," the man cut her off, his tone sharp. "Get out of there. Stop getting in the way."
"But—"
"No buts," he snapped. "I said come back, so come back!"
"What are you still doing there after getting spotted? Waiting to get caught?"
"Completely useless!"
"Fine," the woman said through gritted teeth, forcing herself to answer.
She hung up and looked one more time in the direction Charlotte had gone.
Her eyes burned with resentment.
Charlotte.
This was all because of her.
If it weren't for Charlotte, she wouldn't be in this mess.
Charlotte had done this to her.
The woman clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms.
Just you wait.
She would settle this score with Charlotte, sooner or later.
She wasn't going to let this go.
The woman took a deep breath and turned to leave.
The bulky mascot suit made her movements look almost comical.
No one could have guessed what kind of dark and twisted heart was hiding beneath that cheerful costume.
Just past noon.
The three of them had done enough for the morning, and they were all getting hungry.
George took them to a restaurant inside the park.
It had a nice atmosphere, with a family-friendly menu and warm, cozy decor.
George found a table by the window and sat down.
He put Miranda in a high chair, unwrapped her utensils, and poured her some juice.
He took care of everything without missing a beat.
Charlotte sat across from him, quietly moved by what she was seeing.
George finished ordering and looked up to find Charlotte staring at him with a distant look on her face.
He paused, then felt a quiet lift in his chest.
"Charlotte, what are you looking at?"
Charlotte snapped back to reality and turned away.
"Nothing."
George smiled but didn't push it.
Thinking back to what happened earlier, he asked, "By the way, do you still have that feeling?"
"What feeling?" Charlotte looked at him blankly.
"That someone was watching you," George said. "Is it still there?"
Charlotte shook her head.
"No, it's gone."
"Maybe I was just being too sensitive earlier."
George didn't buy that.
He frowned. "I don't think so."
"I trust your instincts."
"Someone was definitely watching us."
Charlotte looked at him, taking in how serious he was, and said nothing.
Honestly, she didn't think it had been her imagination either.
That feeling of being watched had been too real.
But now it was gone.
Had she really been overthinking it?
Just then, a familiar voice came from behind them.
"George?"
They both turned around.
It was Isaac.
When he saw Charlotte, his face filled with surprise.
"Ms. Blake, you're back?"
George was caught off guard too.
"Isaac? What are you doing here?"
Isaac smiled and walked over.
"I have a stake in this park. Just came by to check on things."
He glanced at Charlotte, his expression carrying just the right amount of surprise.
"Small world, running into you two here."
"When did you get back, Ms. Blake? I hadn't heard a thing."
