Chapter 83 83

Chapter 83 83
GRAYSON
It was nothing new, but seeing not just a few drops of blood, but an actual trail of crimson was terrifying, especially with Adeline being the only one on this side of the house. Did she miscarry? Heavens no! There would be no facing her after that, my rashness in making sure Scarlett had support had been one thing, but costing Adeline a child in the process would be utterly unforgivable .
I couldn’t remember the last time I actually prayed, but in that moment I prayed to every deity and every god that was willing to listen to a humble human’s plea.
I follow the trail backwards to the kitchen where it all began. The disapproving grunt was impossible to hold back. Broken glass was everywhere, almost covering the entire floor with miniature death toys in the form of glass shard. It was safe for me, I had shoes on, but did she?
I racked my brain and grunted in frustration when nothing came to my mind. Had I really been so absentminded that I couldn’t even check to see the state she was in? Fuck! If Adeline never forgave me, I wouldn’t even blame her. I deserved it at this point.
With a lump in my throat, I followed the trail down the length of the kitchen counter in the centre of the room up until a point in the corner, between two bottom cabinets.
Blood. Lots of it. A freaking pool that had to be enough to count as donation at a blood bank. What the actual hell?! Had that been there before. Oh shit, Adeline. I followed a second trail on the right of the counter, back towards the door and it was at that exact moment my heart sank, dropped to my stomach and promised to never return.
The floor was still very much covered with glass shards, but unlike the left, most of the glass pieces were covered with blood, blood I would love to know who the hell it belonged to!
I had a very bad feeling about it and that quickened my steps as I hurried down the hall, my foot stomping against the floor mercilessly. The trail continued and the deeper into the hallway I went, the harder I pleaded to whatever god would listen that it wasn’t infact Adeline’s.
That little glimmer of hope died a quick death the moment I stood outside her door. Blood stains the shape of feet led all the way to and through her door. My brain fried. Like a car breaking down, it overheated and stopped functioning properly.
I kicked down the door without a second thought, my heart moving at a mile a minute, trying to jump right out of my chest.
“Adeline.” I couldn’t even recognize my own voice. Worse, I couldn’t recognize the woman slumped on the floor, with a pill bottle nestled between the cage that were her fingers.
Her hair was sprayed out around her face which faced the right, away from me so I couldn’t even tell if she was conscious or not. If I were to guess, she wasn’t. There was no way she could be, not by the amount of blood she had lost, if the pool surrounding her was anything to go by.
I snatched the bottle from her hand, tucked it in my pocket because there was no time to look through anything but emergency contacts. I cradled her in my arms as I hurried out of the room, with nothing but the worst possible thoughts racing through my mind. What if this was it? What if I don’t lose her because she refuses to forgive me, but because she actually… no! That can’t happen. That won’t happen.
I quickened my pace, practically racing to the car, leaving behind drops of blood with each step.
“Matt! Get one of the cars ready!” I called out to the porch from the living room. Adeline’s hands swayed limply from side to side, without direction or control, scaring me to almost immobility.
“Which one of them, sir?” He called back almost immediately.
“Anyone, boy! Just get something fucking ready!” I screamed, the veins in my neck practically popping. It wasn’t his fault Adeline was in this condition. It was mine. It was all my my fault damn it! Maybe if I had waited to listen to her before rushing Scarlett to the hospital, or even listened to her enough to choose her, take her to the hospital, maybe, just maybe, this would not have happened.
I settled her into the back seat and skipped the way back to the drivers seat, slamming the door shut behind me and flooring it like the crazed man I became whenever she was involved.
I tapped the steering wheel multiple times, my fingers wouldn’t stay put, my foot kept tapping incessantly, my hands shook because really, what if this was it? Could I really handle losing her, for good this time? Just the thought of not seeing her was enough to have a hand clawing around my heart in a vice like grip, much less never seeing her again.
The drive to the hospital was the longest one ever, time seemed to move painfully slow. I hated driving, couldn’t remember the last time I did.
It was like being in my body and yet not quite mine. Nerves racked my entire being the longer I was behind the steering. I tightened my grip on the wheel, wrangling my fingers in an effort to ease the ache to no avail.
Adeline needs me, now more than ever. I chanted over and over in my head as I maneuvered through the crazy traffic. Horns blared all around me, getting louder and louder till I wasn’t certain which was more unnerving, the fact that Adeline still laid unmoving in the back seat or the fact that the last time I was behind a wheel, I ruined a family’s life.
I hit the accelerator like it had knives poking through it, but still pushing because despite my fear, Adeline came first, she should have always come first, but I was stupid, still trying to decide between revenge and love. Very stupid, but I never was the smartest man by a mile when it came to emotions or matters of the heart.
With a heavy sigh, I pushed against the accelerator one last time and held on for a whopping one minute before I gasped for air, my eyes trained on Adeline because she was my lifeline, and I just hoped I could return the blessing and give her hers this time.
Please, be fine. I muttered to her throu
gh the inside rear view mirror. Please, Adeline.
