Chapter 262 Don’t Go See Daisy Again
Chapter 262 Don’t Go See Daisy Again
After they left, Grandma remarked, "Vincent may not be good at much else, but he treats Luna well."
Daisy nodded in agreement.
Grandma's condition remained stable. After spending another night at the hospital, Daisy headed to work to handle some business matters.
Early Saturday morning, she drove to the hospital. The moment she stepped out of her car, she spotted Roxanne, Mark, and Lindsay.
They looked just as surprised to see her.
Daisy acted as if she hadn't noticed them, grabbed her food container, and headed upstairs to the ward.
At the door, she ran straight into Vincent, who was discussing the latest test results with the doctors.
She stood nearby and listened for a bit. Once she'd gotten the gist of things, she followed Vincent into the room.
As soon as the door closed, she asked, "How come you came alone?"
Vincent frowned. "Didn't you say Luna should stay home?"
Daisy paused. "I meant, why did 'you' come?"
Vincent's brow furrowed slightly. "I've been swamped the past few days and haven't had a chance to thank the doctors in person. That's why I came—to express my gratitude."
Only then did Daisy realize she'd misunderstood.
Together, they went to thank the doctors.
Dr. Wilbur smiled. "I heard you've been here two days in a row, Mr. Black. In all the years I've known you, aside from your grandfather, this is the first time I've seen you care this much about someone. What's your relationship with Ms. Hart here?"
Vincent answered, "We're husband and wife."
A flicker of surprise crossed Dr. Wilbur's face. "But I thought you and—"
Daisy quickly interjected, "Recently divorced husband and wife."
If Vincent's words had merely surprised Dr. Wilbur, Daisy's follow-up visibly rattled him. His pupils dilated as he realized he'd stumbled into something significant.
He fumbled for words. "Oh... oh my. How did it come to divorce? You two seem quite well-matched!"
The specific reasons for their divorce weren't something to share with outsiders, so Daisy simply smiled and said nothing.
Vincent politely responded, "Thank you."
After exchanging a few more pleasantries with the doctor, the two walked side by side back toward the ward. What they didn't notice was that Roxanne and her family had overheard every word from nearby.
"Did I hear that right? Vincent pulled strings to get doctors for Daisy's grandma? But aren't they divorced?" Lindsay blurted out first.
Roxanne scoffed coldly. "That's not even the worst part. Vincent just told the doctor they're 'husband and wife'!"
The entire family's expressions shifted.
Cora couldn't help herself. "This is way too suspicious. Did Daisy pull some kind of trick again...?"
Roxanne cut her off. "If she'd really pulled a trick, she wouldn't have bothered clarifying in front of the doctor!"
Lindsay grew anxious. "What... what are we going to do? If Vanessa finds out about this, she'll be devastated!"
Cora felt equally lost. She knew full well that the Drake family's current wealth and status depended almost entirely on the Black family's support.
But Vincent was already having a change of heart after she'd just arrived?
The real problem was that he and Vanessa hadn't even gotten their marriage certificate yet. If they broke up now, Vanessa would walk away with nothing.
Worse, all those gifts he'd given Vanessa could technically still be considered marital property. If he and Daisy teamed up, the Drake family would...
She said urgently, "We need to tell Vanessa about this right away. She knows Vincent better than anyone—she'll know what to do!"
They'd originally come today to accompany Roxanne for a checkup. Who could have predicted they'd stumble onto such a bombshell?
The group hurried home, leaving Cora at the hospital to keep watch.
Vanessa hadn't gone to work today either. She'd taken the day off and was sitting alone on the sofa, drinking red wine, lost in thought.
When the Drake family arrived and told her everything, her expression remained eerily calm. "I see."
"Vanessa, we can't just let this slide!" Lindsay said frantically.
Vanessa nodded. "Mom, don't worry. I won't let them walk all over me. I need Vincent to make our relationship crystal clear—mine versus Daisy's."
Just then, Cora sent another update: [Your brother-in-law stayed in there for half an hour before coming out, and he was smiling when he left!]
Everyone's mood grew even heavier.
That evening, when Vincent returned home, he found Vanessa sitting on the sofa surrounded by empty wine bottles.
She was barefoot, her heels kicked aside, her head buried against her knees.
When she saw Vincent, she looked up at him without her usual greeting.
This version of Vanessa felt like a stranger. "What's wrong?"
Vanessa asked, "Vincent, what exactly did I do wrong?"
Vincent froze.
Tears welled in Vanessa's eyes. "I know about everything you've been doing lately! I never realized Daisy meant so much to you!"
Vincent was silent for a moment before saying, "What I feel for her is just responsibility."
He hadn't denied treating Daisy well. Vanessa's heart sank halfway.
Right in front of him, she sent Daisy a message: [If Vincent wanted to remarry you, would you agree?]
Daisy sent back a voice message. "Are you out of your mind, Vanessa?!"
Vanessa held up her phone for Vincent to see without saying a word.
Vincent said, "I'll move forward with the wedding as soon as possible. Stop sending messages like that to outsiders. It's inappropriate."
Vanessa brightened at the first half of his statement, thinking Vincent's momentary fascination had passed and things would return to normal.
But the second half made her realize she was wrong. Vincent truly didn't care for her the way he used to.
Before, when she'd sent taunting messages to Daisy, he'd never intervened.
But then again, their positions had been different back then. In Vincent's eyes at the time, Vanessa had been the victim and Daisy the homewrecker.
Daisy had gained the title of legitimate wife, along with status and assets, so naturally she should have paid the corresponding price.
Now, however, Daisy had become the one who'd been divorced, while Vanessa had emerged the victor.
Vincent's protective instincts naturally shifted toward the more vulnerable party. Even though he called Daisy an "outsider" verbally, he was still protecting her from the position of a husband.
But Vanessa would never allow herself to become the next Daisy.
What she wanted was 'all' of Vincent!
After a moment's thought, she softened her expression. "Vincent, I'm not trying to pressure you into making a quick decision. Given our history, it shouldn't come to that."
She moved closer and clasped his hand. "If you've truly changed your mind, I'll quietly walk away. But I really hope you won't let me down."
She buried her face against Vincent's shoulder, sobbing softly. "Please, just... don't see Daisy anymore, okay?"
