Chapter 209 As If This Way He Could Become One of Them
After Jason left, Cordelia was called to the office by Jake.
Jake never looked for her unless there was something important.
Cordelia walked to the dean's office door full of confusion, then stopped and knocked.
"Come in."
Jake's voice came from inside.
Cordelia opened the door and walked in. Just as she was about to ask Jake what he wanted, she saw medical Professor Deborah Ramirez sitting on the sofa. When Deborah saw her, she waved at her.
"Dr. Stone, come sit over here."
Cordelia nodded slightly and walked over. "Ms. Ramirez."
Deborah took Cordelia's hand and had her sit beside her, then picked up some documents from the table and placed them in Cordelia's hands.
Cordelia reached out to take them - it was a stack of medical records and some test reports.
"This is a seven-year-old girl from Ravenshollow who has an extremely rare disease."
"The patient's family asked my student to pass these test reports to me. I also contacted the hospital in Ravenshollow, and this condition is real."
"Ravenshollow is currently seeking government approval to establish a treatment team for this rare disease. I've secured one spot and can bring an assistant. I'd like to ask Dr. Stone to come with me."
Deborah had been particularly impressed with Cordelia since meeting her at the awards ceremony last time.
She had originally wanted to bring one of her own students, but they had too little clinical experience.
Cordelia was an excellent and responsible doctor. Bringing her along, she could even offer some ideas.
Medicine has no boundaries. At Deborah's age, she just wanted to pass on what she had learned to people who could carry it forward.
Whether they were her students or not didn't really matter anymore.
When Cordelia heard Deborah invite her to go along, a flash of pleasant surprise crossed her eyes.
Any professor with selfish motives would give such an opportunity to their own students.
Yet Deborah came to invite her - she wanted to give her this chance.
How could Cordelia let down a professor with such a generous heart?
"Alright, when do we leave?"
Seeing Cordelia agree, Deborah's face showed a relieved smile.
"The patient's condition is quite urgent, so I plan to go tomorrow morning. I wonder if Dr. Stone can arrange things in time?"
"I can." Cordelia agreed.
Deborah nodded, then looked at Jake and said.
"Jake, I'm borrowing Dr. Stone from you."
Jake laughed readily. "You've already asked - how could I dare not lend her to you?"
"Just bring her back to me safe and sound."
Deborah smiled and chatted with Jake for quite a while.
Cordelia sat quietly to the side, holding the test reports, still reading.
Jake knew Cordelia didn't have many patients right now, so he said.
"Dr. Stone, you can go back today to prepare, so you can leave early tomorrow morning. Don't feel too much pressure."
Hearing this, Cordelia put down the test reports and stood up from the sofa.
"Thank you, Jake. I'll head back then."
"Ms. Ramirez, see you tomorrow."
Deborah nodded and also stood up from the sofa. She glanced at Jake, then said with a smile.
"I also need to go back and prepare."
"Let's go out together."
Cordelia nodded slightly.
Jake smiled helplessly. "You borrow my people and then just take off."
Deborah exchanged a few pleasantries with Jake, then left his office with Cordelia.
Walking down the hallway, Deborah couldn't wait to ask Cordelia.
"Dr. Stone, after looking at the test reports just now, do you have any thoughts?"
Cordelia pressed her lips together lightly, her attitude very modest.
"No thoughts for now. I need to get to Ravenshollow and see the patient before I can make any conclusions."
Seeing Cordelia's steady character, Deborah nodded with satisfaction.
"Good."
"We'll discuss it after we get to Ravenshollow."
For this child's rare disease, the local hospital in Ravenshollow surely wasn't just inviting her - they were also inviting some of the country's more authoritative medical experts.
Cordelia had a steady character. Bringing her along, Deborah felt at ease.
After saying goodbye to Cordelia, Deborah left Sunrise Valley Hospital.
Cordelia also returned to her office, gave some instructions, and then went back to The Stone Manor.
The Stone Manor.
As soon as Cordelia parked her car in the garage, she heard Amber's laughter coming from the yard.
She opened the car door and got out. Walking up the steps, she saw Alaric crouching beside Amber.
And Amber was playing with a big dog.
Looking at the dog, Cordelia found it very familiar.
This dog seemed to be the search and rescue dog that had helped find Amber yesterday.
"Atlas, sit."
Amber said the command with not quite standard pronunciation.
"Atlas" probably didn't understand. It tilted its head, thought for a moment, then sat down.
Seeing it sit, Amber was overjoyed. She walked over and hugged its neck, petting its fur.
"Good boy."
"Atlas good boy."
Seeing this scene, Cordelia couldn't help but smile.
She walked over and stopped beside Alaric, asking.
"How did you bring Atlas here?"
Alaric looked up at her briefly, then quickly looked away.
"Atlas was injured during a mission years ago, so yesterday was its retirement day. Its handler applied for one last mission for it."
"I saw it liked Amber, so I brought it back as a gift for Amber."
"Thank you." Cordelia said softly.
She could tell Amber really liked the gift Alaric gave her.
Usually when she came back to The Stone Manor, Amber was the first to rush over asking to be held.
But today she was so absorbed in playing with Atlas that she hadn't even noticed her mom coming home.
"Amber already thanked me." He said this while looking in Amber's direction.
Cordelia raised her eyebrows slightly and fell silent.
Every gift Alaric gave Amber touched her heart. No wonder Amber liked him so much.
Amber and Atlas were having a great time, the girl and dog rolling around on the lawn.
With a slight smile on her lips, Cordelia walked toward Amber.
Seeing Cordelia, Atlas sat properly on the ground, tongue out, looking at Cordelia very obediently.
Cordelia reached out and rubbed its head.
Only then did Amber notice Cordelia.
"Mommy."
She opened her arms and hugged Cordelia's legs, tilting her head up with a bright smile.
"This is a gift from Mr. Hughes to Amber. It's Atlas."
Amber's eyes and brows were full of smiles, those round eyes seeming to shine.
Cordelia crouched down and hugged her, saying softly.
"From now on, Atlas is part of our family. It's new here, so Amber can't bully it, okay?"
Listening to Cordelia's words, Amber nodded obediently and promised seriously.
"Amber won't bully Atlas. Atlas is a good friend."
Cordelia's face showed a gentle smile.
Alaric watched this scene and walked to Cordelia's side, as if this way, he too could become part of them.
