Chapter 201 The Innate Bad Traits of Men
Crown Hill Estates. After calming down, Cordelia cleaned the bedroom and tossed the sheets into the washer.
While the sheets washed, she sat on the sofa, scrolling through her phone.
As soon as she opened it, she saw a post from a nursing intern who had worked in the emergency department but had since transferred to another unit.
Cordelia had supervised her for a day, and she had added Cordelia's contact. Cordelia didn't expect her to be a fan of Janet.
"Janet and Mr. Hughes are a perfect match! Both accompanying Mrs. Hughes on her outing. So caring." A photo was attached below the post.
In the picture, Janet covered Ruth with a blanket. From that angle, Ruth's expression was unclear.
Cordelia opened the image and saw Janet’s gentle, dutiful expression, which annoyed her. She took a deep breath and left the Feed.
The door suddenly opened. Cordelia thought it was Alaric, but it was Saskia. "Saskia," she said, greeting her first.
"Mrs. Hughes." Saskia hadn’t expected Cordelia and looked surprised.
She and Alaric had been divorced for years, but Saskia still used this form of address whenever she saw her.
She and Alaric had been divorced for years, but Saskia still used this form of address whenever she saw her.
At this time, Saskia should have been at the hospital taking care of Ruth. Saskia nodded.
"Yes, Mr. Hughes asked me to clean. He didn’t say you were here, so I didn’t bring any food."
Cordelia smiled faintly, stood from the sofa, picked up her phone, and said softly, "That's okay. I was about to leave anyway."
She walked to the entrance, put on her shoes, and waved goodbye to Saskia.
Saskia came out to see her to the elevator, then turned back to clean. Cordelia walked out of Crown Hill Estates.
The security staff at the entrance recognized her and respectfully opened the gate. She walked out and waited by the roadside for a car.
Before the car arrived, she got a call from Alaric. He had already taken Ruth back to her hospital room.
He was on his way back to Crown Hill Estates. Before getting in the car, he checked the surveillance there.
He saw Cordelia standing alone in the living room for a long time, unsure of what she was thinking.
Seeing her lonely figure, he couldn’t help but feel sympathy and called her. "Awake?"
Alaric’s low, indifferent voice reached her. Cordelia bit her lip lightly and replied simply, "Yes."
She spoke little, and Alaric gripped the steering wheel tighter. "Cordelia, don’t you have anything to say about last night?"
Cordelia paused, a subtle emotion flashing in her eyes. She was silent for a few seconds, then said, "A drunken mistake."
Alaric’s hand on the steering wheel showed bulging veins. A drunken mistake? What had it ruined for her?
Because it was him and not Herschel, did she really think it was a mistake? Alaric felt a fire burning in his chest with nowhere to release it.
As Cordelia spoke, a warm rush spread through her body, and she froze. She remembered having cleaned up properly earlier. Unless—
She clenched her teeth. "You didn’t use protection last night?"
Alaric: "I’m not some guy from a nightclub who carries condoms."
"You were in such a hurry last night, so we didn’t use protection. I calculated—today is your safe period."
"If—" If Cordelia got pregnant, he would take responsibility.
But before he could finish, Cordelia hung up. A pharmacy was across from Crown Hill Estates.
Cordelia went straight to the pharmacy, bought a pill, and swallowed it. She wasn’t ready for a new life yet. Besides, Amber was enough for her.
She didn’t plan to give Amber a sibling for now. Alaric’s car had reached the area near Crown Hill Estates, and he saw Cordelia from a distance.
Seeing Cordelia hang up and head to the pharmacy across the street, he quickly sped up and pulled over to the side of the road.
He walked into the pharmacy. Cordelia had already taken the pill and was tossing the packaging into the trash. He stopped, his eyes cold and dark.
Cordelia looked up and saw Alaric at the pharmacy entrance. She was startled. "Shouldn’t you be at the hospital?"
Alaric’s face darkened, expressionless. "What medicine did you take?" he asked coldly.
Cordelia raised an eyebrow and glanced at the medication box from a pharmaceutical company in the trash.
"The kind of medicine you’re thinking of. Don’t worry, I won’t cause you any trouble." Alaric’s face turned ashen, and he said sarcastically, "How considerate of you."
Cordelia sensed a barb in his words. She glanced at him and walked out of the pharmacy.
Alaric followed with a cold expression, grabbed her wrist, and said, "As a doctor, you should know this medicine has serious side effects."
Cordelia pressed her lips together, looked up at Alaric, and gritted her teeth. "Who told you not to use protection last night?"
"I don’t dare gamble on the safe period not causing pregnancy. If I really got pregnant, wouldn’t an abortion be even worse for my body?"
Alaric was left speechless. He looked at Cordelia with deep, dark eyes. Her calm expression was full of resistance to carrying his child.
His heart ached, and his face grew colder. "Is it because you accidentally got pregnant with Amber that you’re so skilled at handling this?"
"How many pills have you taken over the years?" Cordelia’s face turned pale. She shook off Alaric’s grip and tried to slap him.
"How many pills have you taken over the years?" Cordelia’s face turned pale. She shook off Alaric’s grip and tried to hit him.
"Cordelia, during our three years of marriage, you were taking pills the whole time, weren’t you?" He and Cordelia had never used protection in their private life.
But in three years, Cordelia never got pregnant. At the time, he hadn’t thought much of it, but now remembering, his heart ached.
After just one drunken night, she got pregnant with Amber. How could she not have gotten pregnant during their three-year marriage?
Alaric had annual physicals, and his health was excellent. The only possibility was that Cordelia had been taking pills all along.
Cordelia looked at him questioning her with red, swollen eyes and frowned. "We're already divorced. Does the past matter?"
"Even if I hadn’t taken pills, even if I got pregnant and had a child, wouldn’t you have been moved when Janet returned?"
Alaric frowned. If they had had a child, he definitely wouldn't have asked for a divorce so easily.
Cordelia continued, "Mr. Hughes, you're only interested in me now because I left you too quickly, and you haven't adjusted yet."
"If my life were miserable and dark, even if you passed by, you wouldn’t give me a second glance."
"That’s just how men are. You’re no different from any other man."
