Chapter 141 - We Must Get Out of the Country - Meddos

Chapter 141 - We Must Get Out of the Country - Meddos
Veronica

"Does Miguel know about your insecurities?" She lowered her head, shaking it. "You belittle yourself because you're not a virgin, that was your wish. You haven't forgiven yourself for having so many men and women pass through your body. Let me remind you, you didn't do it consciously.

"If you're not honest, then any change in him will make you think it's because he despises you, regrets being with you, or is ashamed of you. Believe me, that's not what torments Miguel."

"Instead of becoming a veterinarian, you should have studied psychology," I laughed, looking at Luisa.

"I've heard that before."

"Would you forgive a lie?" Luisa asked.

"It's hard for me, but before judging, I put myself in the other person's shoes, see their point of view. There are lies and then there are lies. I wouldn't forgive lies stemming from infidelity, those that break trust would hurt me, and I would understand those meant to keep a loved one safe."

"You're very mature. Your husband was lucky to find you."

"But we didn't enjoy it."

"Do you regret anything?"

"Not being careful. I would have loved to have a big pregnant belly right now. To have the hope that a piece of him stayed with me. A little Roland. I would be the happiest woman in the world if it were possible."

"Did you plan to have children?" I laughed heartily.

"According to Roland, none. According to me, at least three." We all burst into laughter. "It's time to rest."

"I have to leave tomorrow. I have work to do. Only two cities left, and I want to go back home. I miss my mom and brother."

"Goodnight."

Luisa got up to turn off the light. I was dozing off when suddenly, there was a desperate knock on the door. We were frightened and sat up abruptly. I opened the door as quickly as I could. The terror in the eyes of Simon and Miguel, backed by Arnold and Anibal, was enough to tell me something was wrong.

"We were attacked. I'm sorry, ma'am, I have to get you out of the country."

"What?!" Luisa and Diana exclaimed.

"The lady is leaving?" I looked at Diana.

"You're all going to the only safe place right now," Simon said, his face twisted with what had happened.

"Luisa stays with me, you go with Onion."

"Where to?" I asked.

"To the house where you were going to live with your husband. No one knows about that property, ma'am. I have to find the bastard who dared to burn down the house."

"Which house?"

"The one we lived in. I have no idea how they blocked my security, it must have been a good hacker, but not better than me. I have to stay, I won't put you in danger. A plane is already waiting for you."

"Luisa..."

"Ma'am, I'm staying with my girlfriend to sort this out. It must have been one of the two cities left, they're bastards."

"Simon, Galaxy?! Gala and Galo?!"

Roland never named Galaxy's puppies because he said he was going to give them away. Days passed and he never got rid of them, so I named them. My dad had my dog, I couldn't take it from him, but now my dogs were burned, my heart tightened. It was my husband's dog.

"I don't know if they're still alive, the house isn't registering any movement." I screamed.

"They were my husband's dogs!"

As if summoned, D'Artagnan entered the room and jumped on the bed. I believe in the premonitions of animals, I clung to my husband's gift. My pulse quickened. The most valuable thing in that house was the dogs. Now I had nothing. Are you going to take all my memories, God?

"We have to go. The only clothes we have are what we brought. The trip will be light. I'll stay in charge of everything." Dad arrived, followed by Raul and Juan.

"Gustavo and Daniel are waiting for you. I'll need them. You only go with Onion."

"I can accompany them, I have no problem."

I wanted to oppose Juan's comment, but the truth was I had other things on my mind.

"Just help us settle in and then come back," Miguel said.

"Daughter." I hugged Dad. "Take your dog, love, it was a gift from your husband, Raul told me."

"Thank you."

"We must arrive in Bogotá before ten in the morning. The trucks are ready."

We all started to prepare. I packed the little I had brought and added clothes for hot weather, the kind I used when I lived with Dad before getting married. The death of my dogs pained me. In a matter of minutes, we were loading the bags into the trucks. In a separate car, Simon and Luisa left with Cherry driving. In the car I was in, Miguel was driving, Arnold sat in the passenger seat, and I was in the back with Ines and Diana, holding the baby. A new change is coming... I don't know if I was ready for it.
The nerves were trying to control them. They knew what they were doing and would keep us safe.

"Does Miguel always drive?" Diana broke the silence.

"I feel safer with him driving, he's the Colombian Dominic Toretto."

"Is he that good?" she widened her eyes.

"You can't imagine. To be a driver, you not only need skill, but also the cunning to make the wheel do whatever your mind imagines. That's a gift. Miguel has always been behind a wheel, a helicopter, or anything that can move on land, air, or water.

"He has a cool head for it. His protégé is Daniel. To create a solid team, you need people good at specific skills. Roland was an expert at exploiting people's abilities and using them to his advantage."

"You knew your husband very well."

"No one ever truly knows anyone. Now that I'm running his companies and analyzing his life, I understand that my husband's success was that he knew how to find people based on their abilities, and that's why he could lead two lives and succeed in both."

We were going at a staggering speed as if destiny itself imposed it. The roads weren't too congested. My father was worried; he promised to visit in about fifteen days. My dog was in one of the cars following us. Gustavo was one of those coming with Daniel and Gladis's family. What was supposed to be a week of rest turned into a tragedy.

A convoy of cars was behind us. It took Miguel three hours to get to the airport. It was surprising how they managed when Simón took control. As we got out, my dog was put in a crate, and he handed us the documents.

"This didn't burn?" I asked, surprised when Simón handed us our visas and passports. "Did you have an ID of mine?"

Luisa looked at her boyfriend with admiration. Simón remained serious, more than serious, he was angry, feeling mocked. For him, his security was unbreakable.

"Since they tried to kidnap her, I took everyone's documents and put them in my backpack. With what was coming, I needed to have everyone's documentation in case we had to run, and look, it happened."

"I've gone two months without carrying my ID in my wallet?"

Despite the situation, Inés's comment made us smile. Miguel arrived next to us, holding Diana's hand.

"Everything's ready. I have the address and the details you gave me. I'm also going with this guy."

"My name is Juan," he responded, annoyed. Raúl hugged me, he was staying, he had to work. "On the plane, I hope you catch me up. I don't understand who wanted to attack Roland's house... Although... I don't think so."

"If you have something to say, speak," Simón cut in.

"Investigate my sister, she hates Vero."

"Your sister isn't smart enough to outwit my security."

"She knows how to manipulate very well."

"Juan," I said. "You know that if you travel..."

"As a friend, Vero, you don't have to remind me every minute." Luisa smiled and came over, hugging Raúl.

"As soon as I can, I'll visit you," my friend said.

"I want you to work for me. Quit your job and I'll wait for you in Blanco, Texas," she said. I looked at Simón. "When everything calms down a bit, have Gladis contact me when you think it's appropriate. Take care. Don't you dare die."

"Don't worry, ma'am. Onion." They looked at each other.

"You know, idiot, that I will protect them with my life."

"Safe travels."

I couldn't talk to Santiago, I didn't say goodbye, although they must be happy, heading to Brazil. I told my dad not to tell them anything, to let them enjoy these fifteen days. I said goodbye to everyone, and when I hugged Luisa, I whispered to her.

"Even if he seems like an oak tree, he's very noble inside. Take care of him, agent. You're perfect for him."

We boarded the plane. I don't know if I'll ever get used to the changes in my life. I hadn't slept at all since we left. In six hours, we'll arrive in San Antonio, then we'll rent cars to get to the ranch. We'll be arriving at night. Inés was carrying Isaac; we needed to find a doctor. Her hand was still delicate, and she needed to finish her therapies.

Diana stayed next to Miguel, holding hands, and he occasionally kissed her hand. Juan had slept the entire trip. I hope he won't be a nuisance. It was true that the subject of giving him a chance hadn't come up. He just wanted to stay as a friend and had always been a gentleman. I only hoped he wouldn't be a headache. The flight attendant brought us food. Each of us ate in our own world, lost in our thoughts. Me... God, what awaits me in Blanco now?
