Despair
Despair
Alden
The darkness was absolute. Cold, damp, and heavy. It pressed in on me, suffocating, a physical weight that stole the air from my lungs. My entire being ached, every ancient bone screaming in protest from the impact. I lay on a rough, stone floor, the stench of stale air, decay, and despair filling my nostrils.
This was it. The world’s darkest dungeon. A place of legend, whispered about in hushed tones by even the most hardened creatures. A place designed to strip away power, hope, and sanity. A faint groan nearby told me I wasn't alone. I forced my battered body to move, crawling through the oppressive gloom, my senses straining. “Layla? Adrik? Akon? Ashton? Ayden?” My voice was a hoarse whisper, barely audible in the stifling silence.
“Alden?” Layla’s voice, weak and trembling, responded. “Is that… is that you?”
I found her first, curled against a cold, damp wall. The black diamond at her throat was still pulsing, but faintly, its light barely piercing the oppressive darkness. It was struggling, its power being actively suppressed by the dungeon’s malevolent wards. The brothers were nearby, their forms slumped against the rough-hewn stone. They were alive, but battered, their inherent magic drained, their dragon forms unreachable. They were just… men. Powerful, yes, but vulnerable.
“Layla,” Adrik rasped, struggling to sit up. “Are you hurt?”
“I’m… I’m fine,” she lied, her voice cracking. “But the diamond… It’s barely holding on. Its power is being siphoned. Just like Talos.”
I finally managed to sit up, leaning against the wall, my crimson robe now torn and grimy. “He brought us here to weaken the diamond. To sever its connection to you, Layla. To make it easier to take.” Despair, thick and cloying, began to settle over us. We were stripped of our power, our home ravaged, our future uncertain. The black diamond, our only true hope, was fading.
Layla’s hand trembled as she reached into the folds of her tattered gown. She pulled out something small, sharp, and glinting faintly in the diamond’s dim light. A small, ceremonial dagger, the one Kai had used on her. My eyes widened. “Layla! What are you doing?!”
Her sapphire eyes, filled with a terrifying resolve, met mine. “He wants the diamond at its strongest. He wants to bind Asher to control Creation itself. He wants to become a god.” Her voice was barely a whisper, but it held a chilling clarity. “If I die… if the diamond is no longer bound to a living host… it will release its power. It will either destroy him or it will free Asher completely. It’s the only way. The only way to stop him is by sacrifice. If I plunge this into my heart, it will release the diamond’s full, untamed power.”
My ancient heart lurched. The thought, the horrifying, desperate sacrifice… it was so Layla. So utterly selfless. So utterly devastating. “No!” Adrik roared, struggling to reach her, but his limbs were heavy, unresponsive. “Layla, don’t! There must be another way!”
“There isn’t, Adrik!” she cried, tears streaming down her face, but her hand was steady, raising the dagger. The black diamond pulsed, a final, desperate burst of light, as if sensing her intent. “I won’t let him win. I won’t let him enslave Asher. I won’t let him destroy everything we fought for!”
The air in the dungeon crackled with her raw, desperate resolve. The black diamond’s light flared, briefly illuminating the despair etched on the faces of the Eargon brothers. Layla, poised on the brink of ultimate sacrifice, contemplating plunging a knife into her own heart, was the embodiment of both the darkest despair and the fiercest hope. And I, Alden, could only watch, my own power suppressed, my own heart breaking, as my queen prepared to make the ultimate choice.
