A Moment of Respite

Kate took a sip of her coffee, the warmth of the drink offering a brief moment of comfort as she gazed at the serene view of Henley Beach through the window. The soothing blue waves of the ocean were rolling gently onto the shore, providing her with a momentary respite for her frayed nerves. Despite the calming beauty of the scene before her, Kate couldn't escape the weight of the exhaustion that clung to her like a heavy fog. Her eyelids felt heavy, her breaths were slow and labored, and her soul felt as though it was weighed down by an invisible burden. She knew she desperately needed a break, but whenever the haunting images of Sasha and Ryder’s pale, traumatized faces flashed before her mind’s eye, any fleeting notion of taking a hiatus evaporated like a bubble in the sun.

At that moment, all Kate yearned for was relief—a chance to rest and recharge, even just for a little while. But she couldn’t ignore the dark shadow that loomed over her, the weight of the unsolved murders that still demanded her attention. She knew deep down that there was no reprieve for her until she could uncover the truth until she could prove that Juan Luu was the killer and ensure he received the maximum punishment from the jury. It felt like the only way she could allow herself even the smallest moment of peace was by solving the case. She couldn't afford to let her exhaustion take over now.

“Kate… Kate.” The sound of her name pulled Kate from her thoughts. She blinked and looked around the quiet room, momentarily disoriented before her eyes settled on the phone in her hand. The screen lit up, and she saw Samuel's name flashing.

With a sigh, Kate picked up the phone and answered, “Hey, Samuel.”

"Hey, how are you holding up?" Samuel's voice was warm, but she could hear the concern underlying his words. She could picture him standing at his place, his strong presence a comforting thought despite the physical distance between them.

Kate leaned back in her chair, her gaze drifting back to the window. “I’m managing,” she replied softly. “Just needed a moment to breathe, you know?”

“I get it,” Samuel said. “But I can hear the fatigue in your voice. You’ve been running on empty for too long, Kate. You need a break.”

Kate exhaled slowly, her heart heavy with the weight of his words. “I know, I really do. But I can’t afford to take a break right now. The case... it’s not over yet.”

Samuel was quiet for a moment before he spoke again, his voice gentle but firm. “I’m not asking you to quit or drop everything, Kate. But taking a few days off, getting some rest—it's not going to hurt. Your mind and body need it, or you’ll just burn out. If you don’t take care of yourself, how can you possibly solve this case with a clear mind?”

Kate’s eyes closed for a brief moment as she let his words sink in. There was truth in them—she couldn’t deny that. But even as her body screamed for rest, her mind remained focused on the case, on the victims, on the promise she’d made to herself to bring justice to Sasha, Ryder, and all the others. “I don’t know,” Kate said, her voice wavering slightly. “I just... I have to see this through.”

Samuel’s tone softened as he spoke again, “I understand your dedication, Kate. You’re the kind of person who gives everything for what you believe in. But you also need to take care of yourself. You can't pour from an empty cup.”

There was a long pause before Kate replied, her voice filled with affection and gratitude. “I know you’re right, Samuel. It’s just hard to step away when I feel so close to solving this.”

“I get it,” Samuel said. “But listen, I’m here for you. Always. And I want you to take care of yourself, even if it means stepping back for a bit. You can’t keep going like this.”

Kate smiled faintly, feeling a warmth in her chest at the sincerity in Samuel's words. “Thank you. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

“You don’t have to worry about that,” Samuel replied, his voice soft but reassuring. “I’m always here, no matter what. You don’t have to face this alone.”

Kate felt her heart swell with emotion, the connection between her and Samuel growing stronger with every word. Despite the dark cloud of the case hanging over her, Samuel’s love was a constant source of light in her life. “I love you, Samuel,” she said, her voice quiet but filled with sincerity.

“I love you too, Kate,” Samuel said without hesitation. “More than you know.”

Kate’s heart fluttered as she held the phone to her ear, the sound of his voice a balm to her weary soul. “You know, I was thinking about something today,” Kate said, her tone shifting slightly. “I ran into this woman a few days ago, and what she said really caught me off guard.”

“Oh?” Samuel asked, his voice curious. “What did she say?”

Kate leaned forward, her gaze now fixed on the window as the waves continued to crash softly against the shore. “I was leaving George’s restaurant when she called out to me. She said she could help me solve my case... but there was a catch. She wanted me to meet her at Somerton Beach.”

There was a brief pause on the other end of the line before Samuel spoke, his tone cautious. “Did you go?”

Kate shook her head, even though she knew Samuel couldn’t see her. “No, I didn’t. I thought she might be trying to scam me, so I stayed away.”

“I think that was the right call,” Samuel said, his voice firm. “You’re a public figure now, Kate. There are a lot of people who’ll try to take advantage of that. She probably saw you on TV or read about your case and thought she could get something out of you.”

Kate nodded, even though Samuel couldn’t see it. “I thought the same thing. But... I’m still curious, Samuel. What if she’s telling the truth? What if she really does have information that could help?”

“Kate, listen to me,” Samuel said, his voice steady but insistent. “You’ve been through too much to get sucked into a scam now. I’m not saying it’s impossible she has something useful to offer, but you need to be careful. You’re not just dealing with some random stranger—you’re dealing with someone who knows what they’re doing.”

Kate sighed, her mind racing with conflicting thoughts. “I know you’re right. But a part of me can’t help but feel like I need to meet her, to see what she knows.”

“Kate, please,” Samuel said, his tone softening. “You’ve got enough on your plate. The police have already arrested someone, right? You said they’ve got evidence pointing to him?”

“Yes, they have,” Kate said. “But... something about the whole situation doesn’t sit right with me. The man they arrested—he’s disorganized, he’s a mess. He doesn’t fit the profile of the killer. The killer is smart, strategic, calculated.”

“I hear you,” Samuel said, a thoughtful pause following his words. “But even so, if the arrest fits the evidence, then maybe you’re just overthinking it. Maybe this guy is a mess because he’s hiding something. We’ve seen it before.”

Kate’s mind was swirling with thoughts, but one thing was clear—she couldn’t let herself be distracted from the case, no matter how badly she wanted to find a break, no matter how tempting the idea of new information might seem. “I’ll figure it out. I always do,” Kate said, her voice steady, though the weariness still lingered.

“Good,” Samuel replied. “And when this is over, Kate... take that break. You deserve it.”

“I will,” Kate promised, her heart lightened by the thought. “I’ll take a long, long break.”

After a few moments of silence, Samuel’s voice broke through again, lighter this time. “Well, when it’s all over, we’ll have plenty of time to enjoy ourselves. I’m looking forward to it.”

Kate smiled, her heart swelling once again. “Me too, Samuel. Me too.”

“I’ll always be here for you, Kate,” Samuel said, the words a comforting reminder of the bond they shared.

“I know you will,” Kate replied softly, feeling a sense of peace settle over her despite everything else. “I love you.”

“I love you too,” Samuel said, and Kate could hear the smile in his voice. “Now, get some rest, okay?”

“I will. I promise.”

“Goodnight, Kate. Take care of yourself.”

“Goodnight, Samuel,” Kate replied, her heart full as she ended the call.
