A PAINFUL EXIT
A PAINFUL EXIT
Maxwell
This morning, I received devastating news…news so tragic that it threatened to unravel the fragile peace we had worked so hard to maintain. The weight of it pressed heavily on my shoulders, and I knew that if word spread too soon, chaos could erupt.
To protect the peace of today and ensure the success of the day’s events, I made the difficult decision to keep it to myself, even from Delilah, my queen and mate. It felt selfish, but I had no choice. The crowning and installment of my queen and Luna had to go smoothly. The kingdom needed this moment of unity and celebration, and I couldn’t let anything ruin it.
Thankfully, the ceremony was a resounding success. The joy and pride I felt as I watched Delilah ascend to her rightful place as queen were indescribable. My people, who had once been skeptical of her, now cheered for her with genuine admiration. And why wouldn’t they?
Delilah is everything a queen should be…beautiful, strong, and powerful. Her presence commands respect, and her heart radiates kindness. She is a force of nature, and I couldn’t be prouder to call her my mate.
I knew Delilah had reservations about revealing her magical abilities. She had always been cautious, preferring to keep that part of herself hidden. But I wanted the ceremony to be unforgettable, a moment that would solidify her place in the hearts of our people. So, I instructed my sister to announce Delilah’s true nature to the crowd. The revelation was met with awe and wonder, and I could see the pride in Delilah’s eyes, even as she tried to mask her unease.
The truth is, even I don’t fully know who Delilah is. Her past is shrouded in mystery, and the little I’ve learned only raises more questions.
One of our captured Lycans once claimed that she was their princess. At the time, consumed by insecurity and fear of losing her, I made the rash decision to have him silenced. Now, I deeply regret it. That Lycan could have provided answers, clues to the enigma that is Delilah.
All I have is the knowledge that she is a Lycan princess, but even that doesn’t explain her extraordinary abilities. Magic like hers is rare, often tied to lineage and ancient bloodlines. I’ve vowed to uncover the truth, no matter how long it takes.
As the festivities wound down, I retreated to my chamber, my mind still swirling with thoughts of Delilah and the secrets she carries. But the moment I stepped inside, I was met with a sight that stopped me in my tracks.
Rosa, the senior healer and magic warrior of the palace, was on her knees, frozen in place. Tears streamed down her face, but she was otherwise motionless, as if time itself had paused around her. My heart raced as I tried to make sense of what I was seeing.
Before I could react, Delilah’s voice filled the room, calm and commanding. “My King,” she said, and I turned to see her standing there, her presence as regal as ever. “Do not be afraid. She is not dead, merely suspended. I will release her once I am certain there is no danger lurking nearby.”
Her words struck me like a blow. Delilah had been protecting the kingdom, even before her official crowning. She had sensed something I hadn’t, and her actions had likely averted a disaster.
I had been so focused on the ceremony, so confident that everything was under control, that I hadn’t noticed the threats she had been shielding us from. A wave of admiration and guilt washed over me as I realized how much she had taken on without my knowledge.
I approached her, my lips curling into a smile despite the tension in the air. Her expression was unreadable, but I could feel the turmoil in her heart.
Though I couldn’t read her mind as she could mine, our bond allowed me to sense her emotions. Her pain, her worry, it all resonated within me, a silent echo of her inner struggles.
I wrapped my arms around her waist, pulling her close to my chest. “Tell me, my queen,” I whispered, my voice soft but insistent. “What troubles your heart?”
For a moment, she stiffened in my embrace, surprised that I could sense her unease. She pulled back slightly, her electric blue eyes searching mine. “How did you know I was worried?” she asked, her voice tinged with disbelief. “Can you read my mind now?”
I chuckled softly, my hands cupping her face as I shook my head. “No, I can’t read your mind, Delilah. But I can feel your pain. I’ve always been able to.” Her eyes widened in astonishment, and I continued, “Remember the first day I saw you? In the elevator? I felt your sadness, your pain, even then. And I also sensed your desire. That connection…it was instant. It was at that moment I knew you were my mate.”
Her lips parted in surprise, and she stared at me as if seeing me for the first time. “You hid all of this from me?” she asked, her voice was almost not audible. My thumb brushed her lips, and I leaned in, eager to close the distance between us. But just as our lips were about to meet, a gentle knock at the door interrupted the moment.
I groaned in frustration, my desire for her burning hotter than ever. “Whatever it is can wait,” I called out, my voice sharp with irritation.
Delilah, however, pulled away. “It might be important,” she said, her tone gentle but firm. Reluctantly, I let her go, watching as she crossed the room to answer the door.
Maria, the daughter of one of our elders and a fierce warrior, stood in the doorway. She bowed respectfully before addressing us. “My king, my queen, we’ve captured two of them. They’re in the strong room. What should we do?”
I frowned, my mind racing. How had Maria become so closely involved with Delilah? And who were these captives? Before I could ask, Delilah responded, her voice steady and commanding. “Leave them there. I’ll deal with them tomorrow.”
Maria nodded and left, and Delilah closed the door, turning back to me. I spread my arms wide, eager to resume where we had left off. But as she approached, her expression shifted, and a coldness settled over her features. My hands dropped to my sides, my heart sinking as I realized something was wrong.
“What happened, my queen?” I asked, my voice tinged with concern. The warmth between us had vanished, replaced by an unsettling tension.
“My king,” she said, her gaze piercing. “What are you hiding from me?”
Her question hit me like a thunderbolt, and I knew there was no escaping the truth. Earlier that day, I had received news of Alpha Farrell’s death. I had kept it from her, unable to bring myself to shatter her world. But now, as her eyes searched mine, I could see that she already knew. She had read my mind.
“Tell me it’s not true,” she demanded, her voice breaking as tears filled her eyes. Her hands gripped the front of my royal suit, her knuckles white with desperation.
“I’m sorry, Delilah,” I whispered, pulling her into my arms. She trembled against me, her grief palpable. I held her tightly, wishing I could take away her pain. But some wounds run too deep, and all I could do was be there for her, as her mate, her king, and her partn
