Chapter 51 Very reckless moment

Chapter 51 Very reckless moment
Veronica's POV:

The drive back was quiet.

Not the comfortable kind of silence—but the kind that presses against your ears, forcing you to listen to your own thoughts whether you want to or not.

My body still felt warm, hypersensitive, as if it hadn’t caught up with my mind yet.

Every nerve remembered him—his touch, his confidence, his devilish fingers that had undid me... the way he’d unlocked something in me I didn’t even know existed.

I’d thought intimacy was about closeness, about emotion and reassurance.

What Max gave me was something else entirely... and he did it just with his fingers?!

And that terrified me.

Because no matter how intoxicating it had been, one truth sat heavy in my chest, refusing to be ignored.

What had I done?

Theo.

Theo—who had been patient. Grounded. Gentle in ways that healed me, made me progressive in my career... instead of consuming me like a demon.

He had stood by me when my world was collapsing... believed in me when my own father didn’t.

And I had crossed a line with his brother.

The guilt coiled in my stomach, tightening with every mile we drove closer and closer back to the beach house.

“That frown doesn’t suit you,” Max said casually, one hand on the steering wheel, eyes fixed on the dark road ahead.

I turned my face toward the window, watching streetlights blur past. “You’re really something else,” I muttered.

He chuckled. “That’s one way to put it.”

I shot him a sideways look. “Don’t get smug...”

“I’m not smug,” he said easily. “I’m observant... very much when it comes to you... And you’re spiraling.”

“I’m thinking,” I snapped. “Which is something you should try sometime... you know what I mean..."

“Careful,” he said, amused. “I might take that as an invitation to distract you again. Did you just forget that you were under my mercy just a few minutes ago..."

My cheeks flushed red, hot in embarrassment. “Max. Stop.”

That wiped the smile off his face... just a little.

“What?” he asked. “Did I not live up to expectations?”

“That’s not what this is about,” I said sharply. “What happened was… a moment. A very intense, very reckless moment.”

“And you regret it?”

The question landed harder on me than I expected.

I hesitated.

“I regret not thinking,” I said finally. “I regret what this means.”

“You’re overthinking it.” Max exhaled through his nose, tapping the steering wheel once.

“No,” I said quietly. “I’m finally thinking clearly.”

He glanced at me then... sharply. “You’ll figure it out,” he said. “You always do. And when you do, you’ll realize I’m not the problem here.”

I scoffed. “Your confidence is exhausting.”

“It’s earned,” he replied. “I know who I am. I know what I bring to the table.”

I closed my eyes briefly. “You’re unbelievable.”

“And yet,” he said softly, “you didn’t push me away.”

That hit too close.

I opened my eyes and stared straight ahead. “You know… I really care about your brother.”

He went very still at that.

Max’s jaw tightened, his hands gripping the wheel harder.

“I love Theo,” I added, barely above a whisper. “I didn’t mean to hurt him.”

He didn’t answer.

The rest of the drive passed in silence... he was very silent... nothing like the Max I’d come to know. No teasing. No arrogance. Just a distance that made the guilt sink deeper.

When we finally pulled into the driveway, the house lights glowing warmly in the darkness, my chest ached.

This was home now. And I’d brought chaos with me.

We stepped inside, and that’s when I saw Theo.

He was standing near the kitchen, sleeves rolled up, looking at us with worry in his face... the second his eyes landed on us.

“So,” he asked gently, “how did it go?”

My breath caught.

I couldn’t look at him.

Neither could Max.

Max brushed past us without a word, heading upstairs—

Theo’s gaze followed him briefly, confusion flickering across his face before he turned back to me.

“Veronica?” he said softly. “Are you okay?”

I was litreally burning inside.

I nodded once, then shook my head, tears blurring my vision. “Theo… there’s something I need to tell you.”

His expression shifted instantly, looking serious now, and attentive. “Okay,” he said. “Sit down.”

I did.

My hands trembled in my lap as I struggled to find the right words.

How do you confess something like this to a man who had never once pressured you, never once crossed your boundaries?

“I didn’t plan this,” I said quickly. “I never meant for things to get complicated.”

Theo didn’t interrupt. He just listened... like he always did.

“I’m confused,” I admitted. “I’m angry. I’m still healing. And I made a mistake.”

That was when he finally spoke.

“Was it with Max?”

He was too fast in catching it up... I didn't even have to explain it to him.

I nodded, tears spilling over.

Theo leaned back slightly, processing. His jaw tightened, pain flashing in his eyes before he masked it.

“I see,” he said quietly.

“I never wanted to hurt you,” I said desperately. “You’ve been nothing but good to me. I don’t expect forgiveness—I just couldn’t lie to you.”

Then Theo exhaled slowly.

“Thank you for telling me,” he said.

That made me cry harder.

“I don’t know what this means for us,” he continued, sounding steady but wounded. “But I appreciate your honesty. We’ll… take time. Figure this out.”

I nodded, feeling ashamed. “I understand.”

As I stood to leave, his voice stopped me.

“Veronica?”

I turned back.

“Whatever you choose,” he said gently, “make sure it’s not out of fear. Or confusion. You deserve clarity.”

I swallowed hard, feeling heavy in my chest.

That night, lying alone in bed, Max’s intensity and Theo’s kindness warred inside me.

One ignited me.

The other steadied me.

And I had no idea which one would ultimately undo me.

I was in a freaking love triangle with no clear way out.
