Epilogue
Aidan's POV
One thing I learned about being trapped inside my own body was that it took resolve to stay alive. It's like being trapped in a room with no windows, just walls, it's suffocating but you can always find your way home if you believe and give it a try. That's Rockwell's theory. He would be proud of me.
Legrange was sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labor in the most secluded prison in the world. It was my desire to lock her in a room where she would never see the sun for the rest of her life. Ever.
Myles? He was cursed with immortality. A curse that left him without his powers, wrinkled, frail and homeless for the rest of eternity. I thought it was a harsh one, but Elly wanted something worse.
Adina saved me, just like I'd seen in my dream but it wasn't as scary as in my dream, because I was surrounded with friends. Rockwell put his life on the line for me. It was an act I found most difficult to understand. It was selfless.
“What are you thinking about?” Elly asked, studying my face.
She must've been watching me over the last couple of minutes without my knowledge. I smiled and touched her nose. We were standing in front of the gargoyle, basking in the chill of the evening wind.
Two days had gone by since the ritual with Adina, three since the holocaust began and my body was still adjusting to every shade of change that had occurred in the last few days. I wanted to forget that I killed people.
“Just, you know.” I said, shrugging.
She smiled too. “So what now?”
“You mean now that we're free?” I asked despite knowing what she meant.
It hadn't fully sunk in my mind that I was free. I guess the idea of freedom was still a myth.
“Yes.” She answered.
I thought for a second before replying, “Let's get married.”
That was the only response I could cook up. Truth was, I had no idea. I'd never tasted freedom my whole life, I guess being offered one scared me.
“Don't be silly, Aidan.” Elly scolded with a pinch that went skin deep.
I groaned and made a face but she only ignored me and went on. “What happens to the academy, and the kids?” She asked, worrying like a reluctant mother sending her kids off to college - not that I knew what that felt like.
I thought about Ryan. He'd lost his dad because of us, what happened to him? The kids in the academy weren't safe, not without Professor Rockwell.
“Why are you worrying about them? They'll be fine. You should care more about us.” I said, planting kisses on her neck.
Elly giggled sweetly, but even that was short lived.
“I feel lost,” she confessed, a distant feeling in her eyes. “Moments like this make me wish Professor Rockwell was with us.”
“Yes, me too.” I concurred.
“If you're going to gossip about me, do it where I can't hear you.” A voice broke into our conversation.
We both smiled as Professor Rockwell brisked towards us with the boys behind him. About Professor Rockwell, dude made us cry for nothing. Turns out when Jimmy set the house on fire, his barrier protected him from the incineration. He had his doubts, but it worked.
“What do we do today?” He asked, when he was within proximity.
“How about we visit the ocean, I haven't done that in so long.” Elly offered.
“You mean the beach? Not like the vast water body.” Jimmy corrected and Adrian burst out laughing.
“Come on, Jimmy. She knows.” Ryan laughed too.
“What happens to you two?” Rockwell asked the two lovers.
“Our love will grow stronger. Even stronger than Elly and Aidan's.” Adrian answered, pulling Ryan into a hug. Ryan let him, which was so not like Ryan.
“You mean your bromance?” Jimmy asked, smiling mischievously.
“I have a confession.” I said, raising my hand. I was about to set the crowd on fire. “Ryan admitted that you have nice butts.” I revealed and everyone paused.
“What?” Adrian asked, laughing heartily with the others.
Ryan lunged after me, and I ran the distance yelling and laughing. He was laughing too, but embarrassed as well.
It wasn't over yet, if any, our lives had just begun. The best part about life is who you do it with. I didn't have to worry about family, I had them, and I loved them. So much
